Rigorous criterion for characterizing correlated multiphoton emissions

Strong correlation of photons, particularly in the single-photon regime, has recently been exploited for various applications in quantum information processing. Existing correlation measurements, however, do not fully characterize multi-photon correlation in a relevant context and may pose limitations in practical situations. We propose a conceptually rigorous, but easy-to-implement, criterion for detecting correlated multi-photon emission out of a quantum optical system, drawn from the context of wavefunction collapse. We illustrate the robustness of our approach against experimental limitations by considering an anharmonic optical system.

Stationary solution of a weak-driven open Jaynes-Cummings system of a degenerate two-level atom coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity field

Analytical solution for the stationary density matrix is derived, by using the Morris-Shore transformation, for an open Jaynes-Cummings system of a two-level atom with Zeeman sublevel degeneracy coupled to an arbitrary-polarized cavity mode. In the limit of weak excitation with the number of quantum in the system not exceeding one, we have obtained the stationary solution of the master equation up to the first order of the driving field intensity. We have also derived the analytic expressions for the excitation spectra of atomic spontaneous emission and cavity transmission. Our results show that the system can be regarded as a non-degenerate two-level system with a single effective coupling constant which depends only on the elliptic angle of the driving field as long as the atom-cavity coupling is not too strong. A precise condition for this approximation is derived. This work provides a theoretical ground for experimentally realizing a Jaynes-Cummings system with a coupling constant continuously varied for various cavity quantum electrodynamics studies.

Atomic Solc filter: multi-resonant photoemission via periodic poling of atom-cavity coupling constant

This paper describes a novel atom-cavity interaction induced by periodically poled atom-cavity coupling constant which leads to multiple narrow photoemission bands for an initially inverted two-level atom under the strong coupling condition. The emission bandpass narrowing has a close analogy with the folded Solc filter in the context of quasi-phase matching by periodic poling. We present a closed form solution of the emission probability at the end of interaction and deduce the multiple phase matching condition for this system which is programmable by the interaction time. The Bloch sphere analysis provides a clear understanding of the underlying atomic dynamics associated with the multiple resonances in the semiclassical limit. Furthermore, we show that this interaction can be applied to generation of the nonclassical field with sub-Poisson photon statistics.

Observation of an exceptional point in a chaotic optical microcavity

We present spectroscopic observation of an exceptional point or the transition point between diabatic crossing and avoided crossing of neighboring quasi-eigenmodes in a chaotic optical microcavity with a large size parameter. The transition to the avoided crossing was impeded until the degree of deformation exceeded a threshold deformation owing to the system's openness also enhanced by the shape deformation. As a result, a singular topology was observed around the exceptional point on the eigenfrequency surfaces, resulting in fundamental inconsistency in mode labeling.

Quasi-Eigenstate Evolution in Open Chaotic Billiards

We experimentally studied evolution of quasi-eigenmodes as classical dynamics undergoing a transition from being regular to chaotic in open quantum billiards. In a deformation-variable microcavity we traced all high-Q cavity modes in a wide range of frequency as the cavity deformation increased. By employing an internal parameter we were able to obtain a mode-dynamics diagram at a given deformation, showing avoided crossings between different mode groups, and could directly observe the coupling strengths induced by ray chaos among encountering modes. We also show that the observed mode-dynamics diagrams reflect the underlying classical ray dynamics in the phase space.

Universal output directionality of ultrahigh-Q single modes in a deformed microcavity with low index of refraction

Experimental investigation of the characteristics of quasi-bound states of a quadrupole deformed microcavity has revealed five distinct mode groups in cavity emission spectra with cavity quality factors different by orders of magnitude and consistently with much different intracavity mode distributions but with almost universal far-field emission patterns. These universal directionality of high Q modes are explained by a subtle manifestation of unstable manifolds of classical chaos in the formation of quasi-bound states.

Development of deformation-tunable quadrupolar microcavity

We have developed a technique for realizing a two-dimensional quadrupolar microcavity with its deformation variable from 0% to 20% continuously. We employed a microjet ejected from a noncircular orifice in order to generate a stationary column with modulated quadrupolar deformation in its cross section. Wavelength red shifts of low-order cavity modes due to shape deformation were measured and were found to be in good agreement with the wave calculation for the same deformation, indicating the observed deformation is quadrupolar in nature.

Chaos-assisted nonresonant optical pumping of quadrupole-deformed microlasers

Efficient nonresonant optical pumping of a high-Q scar mode in a two-dimensional quadrupole-deformed microlaser has been demonstrated based on ray and wave chaos. Three-fold enhancement in the lasing power was achieved at a properly chosen pumping angle. The experimental result is consistent with ray tracing and wave overlap integral calculations.

Dependence of fluorescence-level statistics on bin time size in a few-atom magneto-optical trap

We have analyzed the statistical distribution of the fluorescence signal levels in a magneto-optical trap containing a few atoms and observed that it strongly depends on the relative size of the bin time with respect to the trap decay time. We derived analytic expressions for the signal distributions in two limiting cases, long and short bin time limits, and found good agreement with numerical simulations performed regardless of the size of the bin time. We found an optimal size of the bin time for minimizing the probability of indeterminate atom numbers while providing accurate information on the instantaneous number of atoms in the trap. These theoretical results are compared with actual experimental data. We observed super-Poisson counting statistics for the fluorescence from trapped atoms, which might be attributed to uncorrelated motion of trapped atoms in the inhomogeneous magnetic field in the trap.

The dependence of transverse and longitudinal resolutions on incident Gaussian beam widths in the illumination part of optical scanning microscopy

We studied both theoretically and experimentally the intensity distribution of a Gaussian laser beam when it was focussed by an objective lens with its numerical-aperture (NA) up to 0.95. Approximate formulae for full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the intensity distribution at focus were derived for very large and very small initial beam waists with respect to the entrance pupil radius of the objective lens. In experiments the energy flux through a 0.5 micron pinhole was measured for various pinhole positions. We found that the FWHM's at focus in the transverse and the longitudinal directions do not increase much from the ultimate FWHM's until the input beam waist is reduced below the half of the entrance pupil radius. In addition, we observed significance of the spatial distribution of the input beam against a true Gaussian beam profile in the case of small initial beam waist. For high NA with resulting focal beam waists comparable to or smaller than the wavelength of the laser, the interaction between the electric field and the conducting surface of the pinhole caused the transverse FWHM to be measured slightly smaller than FWHM of the unperturbed intensity distribution convoluted with the pinhole opening.

Analysis of the atom-number correlation function in a few-atom trap

Stochastic properties of loading and loss mechanism in a few atom trap are analyzed. An approximate formula is derived for the atom-number correlation function for the trapped atoms in the limit of reasonably small two-atom loss rate. Validity of the approximate formula is confirmed by numerical simulations.

A definitive number of atoms on demand: controlling the number of atoms in a-few-atom magneto-optical trap

A few 85Rb atoms were trapped in a micron-size magneto-optical trap with a high quadrupole magnetic-field gradient and the number of atoms was precisely controlled by suppressing stochastic loading and loss events via real-time feedback on the magnetic field gradient. The measured occupation probability of single atom was as high as 99%. Atoms up to five were also trapped with high occupation probabilities. The present technique could be used to make a deterministic atom source.

Lineshape measurement of an extreme-weak amplitude-fluctuating light source by the photon-counting-based second-order correlation spectroscopy

We demonstrate lineshape measurement of an extreme-weak amplitude fluctuating light source by using the photon-counting-based second-order correlation spectroscopy combined with the heterodyne technique. The amplitude fluctuation of a finite bandwidth introduces a low-lying spectral structure in the lineshape and thus its effect can be isolated from that of the phase fluctuation. Our technique provides extreme sensitivity suited for single-atom-level applications.

Analysis on the effect of technical fluctuations on laser lineshape

We analyze theoretically the effect of technical fluctuations on laser lineshape in terms of statistics of amplitude and phase noise and their respective bandwidths. While the phase noise tends to broaden the linewidth as the magnitude of the noise increases, the amplitude noise brings out an additional structure with its spectral density reflecting the magnitude of the noise. The effect of possible coupling between those two noises is also discussed.

Regular Spectra and Universal Directionality of Emitted Radiation from a Quadrupolar Deformed Microcavity

We have investigated quasi-eigenmodes of a quadrupolar deformed microcavity by extensive numerical calculations. The spectral structure is found to be quite regular, which can be explained on the basis of the fact that the microcavity is an open system. The far-field emission directions of the modes show unexpected similarity irrespective of their distinct shapes in phase space. This universal directionality is ascribed to the influence from the geometry of the unstable manifolds in the corresponding ray dynamics.

Calibration of second-order correlation functions for non-stationary sources with a multi-start multi-stop time-to-digital converter

A novel high-throughput second-order-correlation measurement system is developed which records and makes use of all the arrival times of photons detected at both start and stop detectors. This system is suitable particularly for a light source having a high photon flux and a long coherence time since it is more efficient than conventional methods by an amount equal to the product of the count rate and the correlation time of the light source. We have used this system in carefully investigating the dead time effects of detectors and photon counters on the second-order correlation function in the two-detector configuration. For a non-stationary light source, distortion of original signal was observed at high photon flux. A systematic way of calibrating the second-order correlation function has been devised by introducing a concept of an effective dead time of the entire measurement system.

Observation of sub-Poisson photon statistics in the cavity-QED microlaser

We have measured the second-order correlation function of the cavity-QED microlaser output and observed a transition from photon bunching to antibunching with increasing average number of intracavity atoms. The observed correlation times and the transition from super- to sub-Poisson photon statistics can be well described by gain-loss feedback or enhanced/reduced restoring action against fluctuations in photon number in the context of a quantum microlaser theory and a photon rate equation picture. However, the theory predicts a degree of antibunching several times larger than that observed, which may indicate the inadequacy of its treatment of atomic velocity distributions.

Observation of Scarred Modes in Asymmetrically Deformed Microcylinder Lasers

We report observation of lasing in the scarred modes in an asymmetrically deformed microcavity made of liquid jet. The observed scarred modes correspond to morphology-dependent resonance of radial mode order 3 with their Q values in the range of 10^6. Emission directionality is also observed, corresponding to a hexagonal unstable periodic orbit.
