On (in)stability of discontinuous standing waves for the NLS with a delta-prime on star graphs

We investigate the existence and (in)stability of standing waves that are discontinuous at the vertex for the one-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) with a power nonlinearity, posed on a star graph consisting of a finite number $N$ of half-lines and endowed with a delta-prime interaction. Our non-variational approach characterizes all possible configurations of such standing wave profiles and shows, rather surprisingly, that the components of any discontinuous-at-the-vertex stationary solution split into two groups, each determined by one of exactly two distinct types of shifted soliton for the NLS on a half-line. More precisely, for every $N\geqq 2$ and every $n\in\{1,\dots,N-1\}$, there are two groups consisting of exactly $n$ and $N-n$ components, with each group sharing a common shift. The stability properties of these discontinuous-at-the-vertex stationary states are analyzed via the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss framework and the Grillakis-Jones Instability Theorem, where non-standard techniques are required to establish the necessary spectral properties of the linearization operators, in particular their Morse and deficiency indices. Our approach yields a complete description of these indices. The results of this manuscript optimally extend previous findings in the literature concerning delta-prime type interactions on star graphs. Moreover, the methods developed here have the prospect of being adapted to study the stability of other discontinuous-at-the-vertex stationary solutions of the NLS on non-compact metric graphs, such as looping-edge graphs.

Existence and (in)stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equations on looping-edge graphs with $\delta'$-type interactions

In this work, we investigate the existence and orbital (in)stability of several branches of standing--wave solutions for the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) posed on a looping--edge graph $\mathcal{G}$, consisting of a circle and a finite number $N$ of infinite half--lines attached to a common vertex. The model is endowed with $\delta'$--type interaction boundary conditions at the vertex, which enforce continuity of the derivatives of the wave functions, while continuity of the wave function itself is not required. By means of the Implicit Function Theorem, we establish the existence of families of standing--wave profiles that converge, on the circular component of the graph, to Jacobi elliptic solutions of dnoidal type, coupled with soliton--type tail profiles on the half--lines. Tools from perturbation theory and Kre\u{\i}n--von Neumann extension theory for symmetric operators play a central role in the (in)stability analysis of such standing wave solutions. Our approach may be extended to other bound states for the NLS on looping graphs or more general non--compact metric graphs.

Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equations on looping-edge graphs with $\delta'$-type interactions

In this work, we study the existence and orbital (in)stability of certain standing-wave solutions for the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) posed on a looping-edge graph $\mathcal{G}$, consisting of a circle and a finite number $N$ of infinite half-lines attached to a common vertex. We consider the self-adjoint realization $(\mathcal{H}_Z, D(\mathcal{H}_Z))$ of the Laplacian, where the domain $D(\mathcal{H}_Z)$ encodes on the half-lines a $\delta'$-type vertex conditions (continuity of derivatives at the vertex, without requiring continuity of the wave function) and $Z \in \mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$. On the circle, we propose Jacobian elliptic profiles of dnoidal type combined with either trivial (zero) or soliton tail profiles on the half-lines with full derivative matching at the boundary. For the trivial tail case we establish orbital stability for all $Z \in \mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$, while for the non-trivial tail case (which requires $Z < 0$) we establish both existence and orbital (in)stability depending on the relative size of $N$, $Z$, and the phase velocity of the standing wave.

Existence and orbital stability of standing-wave solutions of the NLS-log equation on a tadpole graph

This work aims to study some dynamical aspects of the nonlinear logarithmic Schr\"odinger equation (NLS-log) on a tadpole graph, namely, a graph consisting of a circle with a half-line attached at a single vertex. By considering Neumann-Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the junction we show the existence and the orbital stability of standing wave solutions with a profile determined by a positive single-lobe state. Via a splitting-eigenvalue method, we identify the Morse index and the nullity index of a specific linearized operator around a positive singlelobe state. To our knowledge, the results contained in this paper are the first to study the (NLS-log) on tadpole graphs. In particular, our approach has the prospect of being extended to study stability properties of other bound states for the (NLS-log) on a tadpole graph or other non-compact metric graph such as a looping-edge graphs.

Dynamics of the sine-Gordon equation on tadpole graphs

This work studies the dynamics of solutions to the sine-Gordon equation posed on a tadpole graph $G$ and endowed with boundary conditions at the vertex of $\delta$-type. The latter generalize conditions of Neumann-Kirchhoff type. The purpose of this analysis is to establish an instability result for a certain family of stationary solutions known as \emph{single-lobe kink state profiles}, which consist of a periodic, symmetric, concave stationary solution in the finite (periodic) lasso of the tadpole, coupled with a decaying kink at the infinite edge of the graph. It is proved that such stationary profile solutions are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable under the flow of the sine-Gordon model on the graph. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. The local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in an appropriate energy space is also established. The theory developed in this investigation constitutes the first stability result of stationary solutions to the sine-Gordon equation on a tadpole graph.

Airy and Schr\"odinger-type equations on looping-edge graphs and applications

The aim of this work is to study the Airy and Schr\"odinger operators on looping-edge graphs, a class of metric graphs consisting of a circle and a finite number $N$ of infinite half-lines attached to a common vertex. For the Airy operator, we characterize all extensions generating unitary and contractive dynamics in terms of self-orthogonal subspaces and linear operators acting on indefinite inner product spaces (Krein spaces) associated to the boundary values at the vertex. Employing similar abstract techniques, we then describe a systematic way to produce self-adjoint extensions of the Schr\"odinger operator that are compatible with prescribed boundary relations on looping-edge and $\mathcal{T}$-shaped graphs.

Dynamics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation on a balanced metric graph

In this work, we establish local well-posedness for the Korteweg-de Vries model on a balanced star graph with a structure represented by semi-infinite edges, by considering a boundary condition of $\delta$-type at the {unique} graph-vertex. Also, we extend the linear instability result of Angulo and Cavalcante (2021) to one of nonlinear instability. For the proof of local well posedness theory the principal new ingredient is the utilization of the special solutions by Faminskii in the context of half-lines. As far as we are aware, this approach is being used for the first time in the context of star graphs and can potentially be applied to other boundary classes. In the case of the nonlinear instability result, the principal ingredients are the linearized instability known result and the fact that data-to-solution map determined by the local theory is at least of class $C^2$.

Orbital instability of periodic waves for scalar viscous balance laws

The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for a large class of nonlinear evolution equations known as scalar viscous balance laws, the spectral (linear) instability condition of periodic traveling wave solutions implies their orbital (nonlinear) instability in appropriate periodic Sobolev spaces. The analysis is based on the well-posedness theory, the smoothness of the data-solution map, and an abstract result of instability of equilibria under nonlinear iterations. The resulting instability criterion is applied to two families of periodic waves. The first family consists of small amplitude waves with finite fundamental period which emerge from a local Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the velocity. The second family comprises arbitrarily large period waves which arise from a homoclinic (global) bifurcation and tend to a limiting traveling pulse when their fundamental period tends to infinity. In the case of both families, the criterion is applied to conclude their orbital instability under the flow of the nonlinear viscous balance law in periodic Sobolev spaces with same period as the fundamental period of the wave.

Instability theory of kink and anti-kink profiles for the sine-Gordon equation on Josephson tricrystal boundaries

The aim of this work is to establish a instability study for stationary kink and antikink/kink profiles solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a Y-junction so-called a Josephson tricrystal junction. By considering boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, it is shown that these kink-soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. The local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in $H^1(Y)\times L^2(Y)$ is also established. The theory developed in this investigation has prospects for the study of the (in)-stability of stationary wave solutions of other configurations for kink-solitons profiles.

Unstable kink and anti-kink profile for the sine-Gordon equation on a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction graph with $δ'$-interaction at the vertex

The sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction, is considered. The model is endowed with boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, expressing continuity of the derivatives of the wave functions plus a Kirchhoff-type rule for the self-induced magnetic flux. It is shown that particular stationary, kink and kink/anti-kink soliton profile solutions to the model are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. To that end, a recently developed linear instability criterion for evolution models on metric graphs by Angulo and Cavalcante (2020), which provides the sufficient conditions on the linearized operator around the wave to have a pair of real positive/negative eigenvalues, is applied. This leads to the spectral study to the linearize operator and of its Morse index. The analysis is based on analytic perturbation theory, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and the extension theory of symmetric operators. The methods presented in this manuscript have prospect for the study of the dynamic of solutions for the sine-Gordon model on metric graphs with finite bounds or on metric tree graphs and/or loop graphs.

Unstable kink-soliton profiles for the sine-Gordon equation on a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction graph with $δ$-interaction

The aim of this work is to establish a linear instability result of stationary, kink and kink/anti-kink soliton profile solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a $\mathcal Y$-junction. The model considers boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ$-interaction type, or in other words, continuity of the wave functions at the vertex plus a law of Kirchhoff-type for the flux. It is shown that kink and kink/anti-kink soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. For that purpose, a linear instability criterion that provides the sufficient conditions on the linearized operator around the wave to have a pair of real positive/negative eigenvalues, is established. As a result, the linear stability analysis depends upon of the spectral study of this linear operator and of its Morse index. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. A comprehensive study of the local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in $\mathcal E(\mathcal Y) \times L^2(\mathcal{Y})$ where $\mathcal E(\mathcal Y) \subset H^1(\mathcal{Y})$ is an appropriate energy space, is also established. The theory developed in this investigation has prospects for the study of the instability of stationary wave solutions of other nonlinear evolution equations on metric graphs.

Linear instability of stationary solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries equation on a star graph

The aim of this work is to establish a linear instability criterium of stationary solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries model on a star graph with a structure represented by a finite collections of semi-infinite edges. By considering a boundary condition of $δ$-type interaction at the graph-vertex, we show that the continuous tail and bump profiles are linearly unstable in a balanced star graph. The use of the analytic perturbation theory of operators and the extension theory of symmetric operators is a piece fundamental in our stability analysis. The arguments presented in this investigation has prospects for the study of the instability of stationary waves solutions of other nonlinear evolution equations on star graphs.

Extension theory approach in the stability of the standing waves for the NLS equation with point interactions on a star graph

The aim of this work is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the extension theory of symmetric operators in the investigation of the stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with two types of non-linearities (power and logarithmic) and two types of point interactions ($δ$- and $δ'$-) on a star graph. Our approach allows us to overcome the use of variational techniques in the investigation of the Morse index for self-adjoint operators with non-standard boundary conditions which appear in the stability study. We also demonstrate how our method simplifies the proof of the stability results known for the NLS equation with point interactions on the line.

On the orbital instability of excited states for the NLS equation with the $δ$-interaction on a star graph

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a star graph $\mathcal{G}$. At the vertex an interaction occurs described by a boundary condition of delta type with strength $α\in \mathbb{R}$. We investigate an orbital instability of the standing waves $e^{iωt}\mathbfΦ(x)$ of NLS-$δ$ equation with attractive power nonlinearity on $\mathcal{G}$ when the profile $Φ(x)$ has mixed structure (i.e. has bumps and tails). In our approach we essentially use the extension theory of symmetric operators by Krein - von Neumann, and the analytic perturbations theory, avoiding the variational techniques standard in the stability study. We also prove orbital stability of the unique standing wave solution of NLS-$δ$ equation with repulsive nonlinearity.

Orbital stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with attractive delta potential and double power repulsive nonlinearity

In this paper, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an attractive (focusing) delta potential and a repulsive (defocusing) double power nonlinearity in one spatial dimension is considered. It is shown, via explicit construction, that both standing wave and equilibrium solutions do exist for certain parameter regimes. In addition, it is proved that both types of wave solutions are orbitally stable under the flow of the equation by minimizing the charge/energy functional.

On stability properties of the Cubic-Quintic Schrodinger equation with delta-point interaction

We study analytically and numerically the existence and orbital stability of the peak-standing-wave solutions for the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a point interaction determined by the delta of Dirac. We study the cases of attractive-attractive and attractive-repulsive nonlinearities and we recover some results in the literature. Via a perturbation method and continuation argument we determine the Morse index of some specific self-adjoint operators that arise in the stability study. Orbital instability implications from a spectral instability result are established. In the case of an attractive-attractive case and an focusing interaction we give an approach based in the extension theory of symmetric operators for determining the Morse index.

The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of solitary wave solutions for two classes of two-layers systems modeling the propagation of internal waves. More precisely we will consider the Boussinesq-Full dispersion system and the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) system together with its Benjamin-Ono (BO) limit.

Stability of standing waves for NLS-log equation with $δ$-interaction

We study analytically the orbital stability of the standing waves with a peak-Gausson profile for a nonlinear logarithmic Schrödinger equation with $δ$-interaction (attractive and repulsive). A major difficulty is to compute the number of negative eigenvalues of the linearized operator around the standing wave. This is overcome by the perturbation method, the continuation arguments, and the theory of extensions of symmetric operators.
