Statistical measures and the Klein tunneling in single-layer graphene

Statistical complexity and Fisher-Shannon information are calculated in a problem of quantum scattering, namely the Klein tunneling across a potential barrier in graphene. The treatment of electron wave functions as masless Dirac fermions allows us to compute these statistical measures. The comparison of these magnitudes with the transmission coefficient through the barrier is performed. We show that these statistical measures take their minimum values in the situations of total transparency through the barrier, a phenomenon highly anisotropic for the Klein tunneling in graphene.

Study of a quantum scattering process by means of entropic measures

In this work, a scattering process of quantum particles through a potential barrier is considered. The statistical complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information are calculated for this problem. The behaviour of these entropy-information measures as a function of the energy of the incident particles is compared with the behaviour of a physical magnitude, the reflection coefficient in the barrier. We find that these statistical magnitudes present their minimum values in the same situations in which the reflection coefficient is null. These are the situations where the total transmission through the barrier is achieved, {\it the transparency points}, a typical phenomenon due to the quantum nature of the system.

Geometrical Derivation of Equilibrium Distributions in some Stochastic Systems

In this chapter, we present a straightforward geometrical argument that in a certain way recalls us the equivalence between the canonical and the microcanonical ensembles in the thermodynamic limit for the particular context of physical sciences. In the more general context of homogeneous multi-agent systems, we conclude by highlighting the statistical equivalence of the volume-based and surface-based calculations in this type of systems.

Calculation of statistical entropic measures in a model of solids

In this work, a one-dimensional model of crystalline solids based on the Dirac comb limit of the Kronig-Penney model is considered. From the wave functions of the valence electrons, we calculate a statistical measure of complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information for the lower energy electronic bands appearing in the system. All these magnitudes present an extremal value for the case of solids having half-filled bands, a configuration where in general a high conductivity is attained in real solids, such as it happens with the monovalent metals.

Statistical Complexity and Fisher-Shannon Information. Applications

In this chapter, a statistical measure of complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information product are introduced and their properties are discussed. These measures are based on the interplay between the Shannon information, or a function of it, and the separation of the set of accessible states to a system from the equiprobability distribution, i.e. the disequilibrium or the Fisher information, respectively. Different applications in discrete and continuous systems are shown. Some of them are concerned with quantum systems, from prototypical systems such as the H-atom, the harmonic oscillator and the square well to other ones such as He-like ions, Hooke's atoms or just the periodic table. In all of them, these statistical indicators show an interesting behavior able to discern and highlight some conformational properties of those systems.

Heisenberg uncertainty relation and statistical measures in the square well

A non stationary state in the one-dimensional infinite square well formed by a combination of the ground state and the first excited one is considered. The statistical complexity and the Fisher-Shannon entropy in position and momentum are calculated with time for this system. These measures are compared with the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, ΔxΔp. It is observed that the extreme values of ΔxΔp coincide in time with extreme values of the other two statistical magnitudes.

Shape of Traveling Densities with Extremum Statistical Complexity

In this paper, we analyze the behavior of statistical complexity in several systems where two identical densities that travel in opposite direction cross each other. Besides the crossing between two Gaussian, rectangular and triangular densities studied in a previous work, we also investigate in detail the crossing between two exponential and two gamma distributions. For all these cases, the shape of the total density presenting an extreme value in complexity is found.

Statistical measures applied to metal clusters: evidence of magic numbers

In this work, a shell model for metal clusters up to 220 valence electrons is used to obtain the fractional occupation probabilities of the electronic orbitals. Then, the calculation of a statistical measure of complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information is carried out. An increase of both magnitudes with the number of valence electrons is observed. The shell structure is reflected by the behavior of the statistical complexity. The magic numbers are indicated by the Fisher-Shannon information. So, as in the case of atomic nuclei, the study of statistical indicators also unveil the existence of magic numbers in metal clusters.

Equilibrium Distributions in Open and Closed Statistical Systems

In this communication, the derivation of the Boltzmann-Gibbs and the Maxwellian distributions is presented from a geometrical point of view under the hypothesis of equiprobability. It is shown that both distributions can be obtained by working out the properties of the volume or the surface of the respective geometries delimited in phase space by an additive constraint. That is, the asymptotic equilibrium distributions in the thermodynamic limit are independent of considering open or closed homogeneous statistical systems.

Statistical Complexity in Traveling Densities

In this work, we analyze the behavior of statistical complexity in several systems where two identical densities that travel in opposite direction cross each other. The crossing between two Gaussian, rectangular and triangular densities is studied in detail. For these three cases, the shape of the total density presenting an extreme value in complexity is found.

Evidence of magic numbers in nuclei by statistical indicators

The calculation of a statistical measure of complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information in nuclei is carried out in this work. We use the nuclear shell model in order to obtain the fractional occupation probabilities of nuclear orbitals. The increasing of both magnitudes, the statistical complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information, with the number of nucleons is observed. The shell structure is reflected by the behavior of the statistical complexity. The magic numbers are revealed by the Fisher-Shannon information.

Alternative evaluation of statistical indicators in atoms: the non-relativistic and relativistic cases

In this work, the calculation of a statistical measure of complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information is performed for all the atoms in the periodic table. Non-relativistic and relativistic cases are considered. We follow the method suggested in [C.P. Panos, N.S. Nikolaidis, K. Ch. Chatzisavvas, C.C. Tsouros, arXiv:0812.3963v1] that uses the fractional occupation probabilities of electrons in atomic orbitals, instead of the continuous electronic wave functions. For the order of shell filling in the relativistic case, we take into account the effect due to electronic spin-orbit interaction. The increasing of both magnitudes, the statistical complexity and the Fisher-Shannon information, with the atomic number $Z$ is observed. The shell structure and the irregular shell filling is well displayed by the Fisher-Shannon information in the relativistic case.

Complexity invariance by replication in the quantum square well

A new kind of invariance by replication of a statistical measure of complexity is considered. We show that the set of energy eigenstates of the quantum infinite square well displays this particular invariance. Then, this system presents a constant complexity for all the energy eigenstates.

Complexity in atoms: an approach with a new analytical density

In this work, the calculation of complexity on atomic systems is considered. In order to unveil the increasing of this statistical magnitude with the atomic number due to the relativistic effects, recently reported in [A. Borgoo, F. De Proft, P. Geerlings, K.D. Sen, Chem. Phys. Lett., 444 (2007) 186], a new analytical density to describe neutral atoms is proposed. This density is inspired in the Tietz potential model. The parameters of this density are determined from the normalization condition and from a variational calculation of the energy, which is a functional of the density. The density is non-singular at the origin and its specific form is selected so as to fit the results coming from non-relativistic Hartree-Fock calculations. The main ingredients of the energy functional are the non-relativistic kinetic energy, the nuclear-electron attraction energy and the classical term of the electron repulsion. The relativistic correction to the kinetic energy and the Weizsacker term are also taken into account. The Dirac and the correlation terms are shown to be less important than the other terms and they have been discarded in this study. When the statistical measure of complexity is calculated in position space with the analytical density derived from this model, the increasing trend of this magnitude as the atomic number increases is also found.

Some features of the statistical complexity, Fisher-Shannon information, and Bohr-like orbits in the Quantum Isotropic Harmonic Oscillator

The Fisher-Shannon information and a statistical measure of complexity are calculated in the position and momentum spaces for the wave functions of the quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator. We show that these magnitudes are independent of the strength of the harmonic potential. Moreover, for each level of energy, it is found that these two indicators take their minimum values on the orbitals that correspond to the classical (circular) orbits in the Bohr-like quantum image, just those with the highest orbital angular momentum.

The Fisher-Shannon information and a statistical measure of complexity are calculated in the position and momentum spaces for the wave functions of the H-atom. For each level of energy, it is found that these two indicators take their minimum values on the orbitals that correspond to the classical (circular) orbits in the Bohr atomic model, just those with the highest orbital angular momentum.

On the equivalence of the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles: a geometrical approach

In this paper, we consider the volume enclosed by the microcanonical ensemble in phase space as a statistical ensemble. This can be interpreted as an intermediate image between the microcanonical and the canonical pictures. By maintaining the ergodic hypothesis over this ensemble, that is, the equiprobability of all its accessible states, the equivalence of this ensemble in the thermodynamic limit with the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles is suggested by means of geometrical arguments. The Maxwellian and the Boltzmann-Gibbs distributions are obtained from this formalism. In the appendix, the derivation of the Boltzmann factor from a new microcanonical image of the canonical ensemble is also given.

Multi-agent systems, Equiprobability, Gamma distributions and other Geometrical questions

A set of many identical interacting agents obeying a global additive constraint is considered. Under the hypothesis of equiprobability in the high-dimensional volume delimited in phase space by the constraint, the statistical behavior of a generic agent over the ensemble is worked out. The asymptotic distribution of that statistical behavior is derived from geometrical arguments. This distribution is related with the Gamma distributions found in several multi-agent economy models. The parallelism with all these systems is established. Also, as a collateral result, a formula for the volume of high-dimensional symmetrical bodies is proposed.
