Anomalous dynamical energy flows via nonlinear phononics in spin-Peierls chains

We investigate the nonequilibrium spin-phonon dynamics and energy cascades in a strongly dimerized spin-Peierls chain using a multi-tiered nonlinear phononics architecture. To bypass linear selection rules prohibiting the direct excitation of the Raman-active dimerization mode, a terahertz laser drives an infrared mode that nonlinearly couples to the Raman lattice displacement, subsequently modulating the magnetic exchange. Employing a bond-operator formalism with a second-order cumulant expansion of the Lindblad master equation, we show that maximum energy transfer into the magnetic sector is governed by a dynamical impedance-matching condition rather than the unperturbed triplon density of states. We find that the sustained energy input of continuous-wave driving builds high excitation densities that severely back-act on the lattice, overdamping the primary phonon and smearing magnetic features via power broadening. Conversely, the small time-integrated energy of a pulse keeps the response perturbative, terminating before back-action accumulates and preserving sharp Fano-like quantum interferences. These insights establish limits for controlling dynamic magnetic states without quenching the driving lattice modes.

Hadamard regularization of open quantum systems coupled to unstructured environments in the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism

The theory of open quantum systems addresses how coupling to external degrees of freedom modifies observables and quantum coherence, a situation central to fundamental condensed-matter research and emerging quantum technologies. Schwinger-Keldysh field theory is a natural framework for both open- and nonequilibrium quantum systems in terms of functional integrals. However, its numerical solution is limited by a cubic scaling with the number of time steps. This is particularly prohibitive for scenarios with widely separated time scales, as is often the case for system and environmental scales. We consider a damped quantum harmonic oscillator as a toy model to study a separation-of-scales ansatz based on Hadamard regularization. A time-stepping algorithm for the Kadanoff-Baym equations on the slow system time-scale is presented that captures both low-temperature non-Markovianity and renormalization effects arising from the much faster environment scale.

Direct observation of the Higgs particle in a superconductor by non-equilibrium Raman scattering

Even before its role in electroweak symmetry breaking, the Anderson-Higgs mechanism was introduced to explain the Meissner effect in superconductors. Spontaneous symmetry-breaking yields massless phase modes representing the low-energy excitations of the Mexican-Hat potential. Only in superconductors the phase mode is shifted towards higher energies owing to the gauge field of the charged condensate. This results in a low-energy excitation spectrum governed by the Higgs mode. Consequently, the Meissner effect signifies a macroscopic quantum condensate in which a photon acquires mass, representing a one-to-one analogy to high-energy physics. We report on the direct observation of the Higgs particle in the high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212 by developing an innovative technique to study its symmetries and energies after a "soft quench" of the Mexican-Hat potential. Population inversion of the metastable Higgs particle induced by an initial laser pulse allows identifying the polarization-dependent Higgs modes as an additional anti-Stokes Raman-scattering signal. Within Ginzburg-Landau theory, the Higgs-mode energy is connected to the Cooper-pair coherence length. Within a BCS weak-coupling model we develop a quantitative and coherent description of single-particle and two-particle channels. This opens the avenue for Higgs Spectroscopy in quantum condensates and provides a unique pathway to control and explore Higgs physics.
