The zero set of the Zak transform of B-splines with applications to Gabor frames

We study the zero sets of the Zak transform $Z_λB_n(x,ν)$ of B-splines for $λ> 0$. Specifically, we provide a full characterization of the zero set for the hat spline for all positive values of the parameter $λ$ and for higher order B-splines when $λ> 1$. Finally, we apply these results to establish the frame property of integer-oversampled Gabor systems generated by B-splines. In particular, we characterize the frame property for integer-oversampled Gabor systems generated by the hat splines.

Bayesian decomposition using Besov priors

In many inverse problems, the unknown is composed of multiple components with different regularities, for example, in imaging problems, where the unknown can have both rough and smooth features. We investigate linear Bayesian inverse problems, where the unknown consists of two components: one smooth and one piecewise constant. We model the unknown as a sum of two components and assign individual priors on each component to impose the assumed behavior. We propose and compare two prior models: (i) a combination of a Haar wavelet-based Besov prior and a smoothing Besov prior, and (ii) a hierarchical Gaussian prior on the gradient coupled with a smoothing Besov prior. To achieve a balanced reconstruction, we place hyperpriors on the prior parameters and jointly infer both the components and the hyperparameters. We propose Gibbs sampling schemes for posterior inference in both prior models. We demonstrate the capabilities of our approach on 1D and 2D deconvolution problems, where the unknown consists of smooth parts with jumps. The numerical results indicate that our methods improve the reconstruction quality compared to single-prior approaches and that the prior parameters can be successfully estimated to yield a balanced decomposition.

A new family of hyperbolic slits in the Gabor frame set of B-spline generators

We exhibit a new infinite family of hyperbolic curves in the complement of the frame set of Gabor systems with B-spline generators. The proof technique is a combination of an approach by Gröchenig [Partitions of unity and new obstructions for Gabor frames, arXiv:1507.08432, 2015] and a partly partition of unity argument by Nielsen and the author [Counterexamples to the B-spline conjecture for Gabor frames, J. Fourier Anal. Appl., 22(6):1440-1451, 2016]. We relate the new hyperbolic obstructions to the "right bow tie" of the so-called Janssen tie [Zak transforms with few zeros and the tie, In Advances in Gabor analysis, Birkhäuser, 2003].

On the non-frame property of Gabor systems with Hermite generators and the frame set conjecture

The frame set conjecture for Hermite functions formulated in [Gröchenig, J. Fourier Anal. Appl., 20(4):865-895, 2014] states that the Gabor frame set for these generators is the largest possible, that is, the time-frequency shifts of the Hermite functions associated with sampling rates $α$ and modulation rates $β$ that avoid all known obstructions lead to Gabor frames for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$. By results in [Seip and Wallstén, J. Reine Angew. Math., 429:107-113, 1992] and [Lemvig, Monatsh. Math., 182(4):899-912, 2017], it is known that the conjecture is true for the Gaussian, the $0$th order Hermite functions, and false for Hermite functions of order $2,3,6,7,10,11,\dots$, respectively. In this paper we disprove the remaining cases except for the $1$st order Hermite function.

Uncertainty Quantification for Linear Inverse Problems with Besov Prior: A Randomize-Then-Optimize Method

In this work, we investigate the use of Besov priors in the context of Bayesian inverse problems. The solution to Bayesian inverse problems is the posterior distribution which naturally enables us to interpret the uncertainties. Besov priors are discretization invariant and can promote sparsity in terms of wavelet coefficients. We propose the randomize-then-optimize method to draw samples from the posterior distribution with Besov priors under a general parameter setting and estimate the modes of the posterior distribution. The performance of the proposed method is studied through numerical experiments of a 1D inpainting problem, a 1D deconvolution problem, and a 2D computed tomography problem. Further, we discuss the influence of the choice of the Besov parameters and the wavelet basis in detail, and we compare the proposed method with the state-of-the-art methods. The numerical results suggest that the proposed method is an effective tool for sampling the posterior distribution equipped with general Besov priors.

Criteria for generalized translation-invariant frames

This paper provides new sufficient and necessary conditions for the frame property of generalized translation-invariant systems. The conditions are formulated in the Fourier domain and consists of estimates involving the upper and lower frame bound. Contrary to known conditions of a similar nature, the estimates take the phase of the generating functions in consideration and not only their modulus. The possibility of phase cancellations makes these estimates optimal for tight frames. The results on generalized translation-invariant systems will be proved in the setting of locally compact abelian groups, but even for euclidean space and the special case of (composite) wavelet systems the results are new.

Gabor windows supported on $[-1,1]$ and construction of compactly supported dual windows with optimal frequency localization

We consider Gabor frames $\{e^{2πi bm \cdot} g(\cdot-ak)\}_{m,k \in \mathbb{Z}}$ with translation parameter $a=L/2$, modulation parameter $b \in (0,2/L)$ and a window function $g \in C^n(\mathbb{R})$ supported on $[x_0,x_0+L]$ and non-zero on $(x_0,x_0+L)$ for $L>0$ and $x_0\in \mathbb{R}$. The set of all dual windows $h \in L^2(\mathbb{R})$ with sufficiently small support is parametrized by $1$-periodic measurable functions $z$. Each dual window $h$ is given explicitly in terms of the function $z$ in such a way that desirable properties (e.g., symmetry, boundedness and smoothness) of $h$ are directly linked to $z$. We derive easily verifiable conditions on the function $z$ that guarantee, in fact, characterize, compactly supported dual windows $h$ with the same smoothness, i.e., $h \in C^n(\mathbb{R})$. The construction of dual windows is valid for all values of the smoothness index $n \in \mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0} \cup \{\infty\}$ and for all values of the modulation parameter $b<2/L$; since $a=L/2$, this allows for arbitrarily small redundancy $(ab)^{-1}>1$. We show that the smoothness of $h$ is optimal, i.e., if $g \notin C^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})$ then, in general, a dual window $h$ in $C^{n+1}(\mathbb{R})$ does not exist.

System bandwidth and the existence of generalized shift-invariant frames

We consider the question whether, given a countable system of lattices $(Γ_j)_{j \in J}$ in a locally compact abelian group $G$, there exists a sequence of functions $(g_j)_{j \in J}$ such that the resulting generalized shift-invariant system $(g_j(\cdot - γ))_{j \in J, γ\in Γ_j}$ is a tight frame of $L^2(G)$. This paper develops a new approach to the study of almost periodic functions for generalized shift-invariant systems based on an \emph{unconditionally convergence property}, replacing previously used local integrability conditions. From this theory, we derive characterizing relations for tight and dual frame generators, we introduce the \emph{system bandwidth} as a measure of the total bandwidth a generalized shift-invariant system can carry, and we show that the so-called Calderón sum is uniformly bounded from below for generalized shift-invariant frames. We exhibit a condition on the lattice system for which the unconditionally convergence property is guaranteed to hold. Without the unconditionally convergence property, we show, counter intuitively, that even orthonormal bases can have arbitrary small system bandwidth. Our results show that the question of existence of frame generators for a general lattice system can be rather subtle, depending on analytical properties, such as the system bandwidth, as well as on algebraic properties of the lattice system.

On Wilson bases in L2(R^d)

A Wilson system is a collection of finite linear combinations of time frequency shifts of a square integrable function. In this paper we use the fact that a Wilson system is a shift-invariant system to explore its relationship with Gabor systems. It is well known that, starting from a tight Gabor frame for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ with redundancy $2$, one can construct an orthonormal Wilson basis for $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ whose generator is well localized in the time-frequency plane. In this paper, we show that one can construct multi-dimensional orthonormal Wilson bases starting from tight Gabor frames of redundancy $2^k$ where $k=1, 2, ..., d$. These results generalize most of the known results about the existence of orthonormal Wilson bases.

Explicit constructions and properties of generalized shift-invariant systems in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$

Generalized shift-invariant (GSI) systems, originally introduced by Hernández, Labate & Weiss and Ron & Shen, provide a common frame work for analysis of Gabor systems, wavelet systems, wave packet systems, and other types of structured function systems. In this paper we analyze three important aspects of such systems. First, in contrast to the known cases of Gabor frames and wavelet frames, we show that for a GSI system forming a frame, the Calderón sum is not necessarily bounded by the lower frame bound. We identify a technical condition implying that the Calderón sum is bounded by the lower frame bound and show that under a weak assumption the condition is equivalent with the local integrability condition introduced by Hernández et al. Second, we provide explicit and general constructions of frames and dual pairs of frames having the GSI-structure. In particular, the setup applies to wave packet systems and in contrast to the constructions in the literature, these constructions are not based on characteristic functions in the Fourier domain. Third, our results provide insight into the local integrability condition (LIC).

Wavelets for non-expanding dilations and the lattice counting estimate

We show that problems of existence and characterization of wavelets for non-expanding dilations are intimately connected with the geometry of numbers; more specifically, with a bound on the number of lattice points in balls dilated by the powers of a dilation matrix $A \in \mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$. This connection is not visible for the well-studied class of expanding dilations since the desired lattice counting estimate holds automatically. We show that the lattice counting estimate holds for all dilations $A$ with $\left|\det{A}\right|\ne 1$ and for almost every lattice $Γ$ with respect to the invariant probability measure on the set of lattices. As a consequence, we deduce the existence of minimally supported frequency (MSF) wavelets associated with such dilations for almost every choice of a lattice. Likewise, we show that MSF wavelets exist for all lattices and and almost every choice of a dilation $A$ with respect to the Haar measure on $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$.

On some Hermite series identities and their applications to Gabor analysis

We prove some infinite series identities for the Hermite functions. From these identities we disprove the Gabor frame set conjecture for Hermite functions of order $4m+2$ and $4m+3$ for $m \in \{0\} \cup \mathbb{N}$. The results hold not only for Hermite functions, but for two large classes of eigenfunctions of the Fourier transform associated with the eigenvalues $-1$ and $i$, and the results indicate that the Gabor frame set of all such functions must have a rather complicated structure.

Counterexamples to the B-spline conjecture for Gabor frames

The frame set conjecture for B-splines $B_n$, $n \ge 2$, states that the frame set is the maximal set that avoids the known obstructions. We show that any hyperbola of the form $ab=r$, where $r$ is a rational number smaller than one and $a$ and $b$ denote the sampling and modulation rates, respectively, has infinitely many pieces, located around $b=2,3,\dots$, \emph{not} belonging to the frame set of the $n$th order B-spline. This, in turn, disproves the frame set conjecture for B-splines. On the other hand, we uncover a new region belonging to the frame set for B-splines $B_n$, $n \ge 2$.

Reproducing formulas for generalized translation invariant systems on locally compact abelian groups

In this paper we connect the well established discrete frame theory of generalized shift invariant systems to a continuous frame theory. To do so, we let $Γ_j$, $j \in J$, be a countable family of closed, co-compact subgroups of a second countable locally compact abelian group $G$ and study systems of the form $\cup_{j \in J}\{g_{j,p}(\cdot - γ)\}_{γ\in Γ_j, p \in P_j}$ with generators $g_{j,p}$ in $L^2(G)$ and with each $P_j$ being a countable or an uncountable index set. We refer to systems of this form as generalized translation invariant (GTI) systems. Many of the familiar transforms, e.g., the wavelet, shearlet and Gabor transform, both their discrete and continuous variants, are GTI systems. Under a technical $α$ local integrability condition ($α$-LIC) we characterize when GTI systems constitute tight and dual frames that yield reproducing formulas for $L^2(G)$. This generalizes results on generalized shift invariant systems, where each $P_j$ is assumed to be countable and each $Γ_j$ is a uniform lattice in $G$, to the case of uncountably many generators and (not necessarily discrete) closed, co-compact subgroups. Furthermore, even in the case of uniform lattices $Γ_j$, our characterizations improve known results since the class of GTI systems satisfying the $α$-LIC is strictly larger than the class of GTI systems satisfying the previously used local integrability condition. As an application of our characterization results, we obtain new characterizations of translation invariant continuous frames and Gabor frames for $L^2(G)$. In addition, we will see that the admissibility conditions for the continuous and discrete wavelet and Gabor transform in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ are special cases of the same general characterizing equations.

Co-compact Gabor systems on locally compact abelian groups

In this work we extend classical structure and duality results in Gabor analysis on the euclidean space to the setting of second countable locally compact abelian (LCA) groups. We formulate the concept of rationally oversampling of Gabor systems in an LCA group and prove corresponding characterization results via the Zak transform. From these results we derive non-existence results for critically sampled continuous Gabor frames. We obtain general characterizations in time and in frequency domain of when two Gabor generators yield dual frames. Moreover, we prove the Walnut and Janssen representation of the Gabor frame operator and consider the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality relations for dual generators. Finally, we prove the duality principle for Gabor frames. Unlike most duality results on Gabor systems, we do not rely on the fact that the translation and modulation groups are discrete and co-compact subgroups. Our results only rely on the assumption that either one of the translation and modulation group (in some cases both) are co-compact subgroups of the time and frequency domain. This presentation offers a unified approach to the study of continuous and the discrete Gabor frames.

Density and duality theorems for regular Gabor frames

We investigate Gabor frames on locally compact abelian groups with time-frequency shifts along non-separable, closed subgroups of the phase space. Density theorems in Gabor analysis state necessary conditions for a Gabor system to be a frame or a Riesz basis, formulated only in terms of the index subgroup. In the classical results the subgroup is assumed to be discrete. We prove density theorems for general closed subgroups of the phase space, where the necessary conditions are given in terms of the "size" of the subgroup. From these density results we are able to extend the classical Wexler-Raz biorthogonal relations and the duality principle in Gabor analysis to Gabor systems with time-frequency shifts along non-separable, closed subgroups of the phase space. Even in the euclidean setting, our results are new.

Prime tight frames

We introduce a class of finite tight frames called prime tight frames and prove some of their elementary properties. In particular, we show that any finite tight frame can be written as a union of prime tight frames. We then characterize all prime harmonic tight frames and use this characterization to suggest effective analysis and synthesis computation strategies for such frames. Finally, we describe all prime frames constructed from the spectral tetris method, and, as a byproduct, we obtain a characterization of when the spectral tetris construction works for redundancies below two.
