Calabi-Yau Orientifold Hypersurfaces and their F-theory Uplifts

We present an algorithm that constructs Calabi-Yau threefold orientifolds and their $F$-theory uplifts to elliptically-fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds, embedded in toric varieties at codimension one and two respectively. The resulting Calabi-Yau fourfolds arise from triangulations of $6d$ reflexive polytopes -- which our method constructs from orientifold data -- and are smooth away from isolated terminal singularities. For many of our fourfolds, the construction of the mirror manifold is immediate, enabling the computation of fourfold periods, and thus the seven-brane superpotential. We present multiple examples that demonstrate these capabilities. Our algorithms work with $\mathtt{CYTools}$ and are available through a GitHub repository.

$G_2$-manifolds from Diophantine equations

We argue that perturbatively flat vacua (PFVs) introduced in \cite{Demirtas:2019sip} are dual to M-theory compactifications on $G_2$-manifolds, enabling the enumeration of potentially novel $G_2$-manifolds via solutions to Diophantine equations in type IIB flux quanta. Independently, we show that warping corrections to the effective action of type IIB flux vacua grow parametrically at large complex structure, and we demonstrate that these corrections can nonetheless be captured by a classical geometric computation in M-theory.

Candidate de Sitter Vacua

We construct compactifications of type IIB string theory that yield, at leading order in the $\alpha^\prime$ and $g_s$ expansions, de Sitter vacua of the form envisioned by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde, and Trivedi. We specify explicit Calabi-Yau orientifolds and quantized fluxes for which we derive the four-dimensional effective supergravity theories, incorporating the exact flux superpotential, the nonperturbative superpotential from Euclidean D3-branes, and the K\"ahler potential at tree level in the string loop expansion but to all orders in $\alpha'$. Each example includes a Klebanov-Strassler throat region containing a single anti-D3-brane, whose supersymmetry-breaking energy, computed at leading order in $\alpha'$, causes an uplift to a metastable de Sitter vacuum in which all moduli are stabilized. Finding vacua that demonstrably survive subleading corrections, and in which the quantization conditions are completely understood, is an important open problem for which this work has prepared the foundations.

Counting Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We enumerate topologically-inequivalent compact Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces. By computing arithmetic and algebraic invariants and the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of curves, we prove that the number of distinct simply connected Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces resulting from triangulations of four-dimensional reflexive polytopes is 4, 27, 183, 1,184 and 8,036 at $h^{1,1}$ = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. We also establish that there are ten equivalence classes of Wall data of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds from the Kreuzer-Skarke list. Finally, we give a provisional count of threefolds obtained by enumerating non-toric flops at $h^{1,1} =2$.

Glimmers from the Axiverse

We study axion-photon couplings in compactifications of type IIB string theory. We find that these couplings are systematically suppressed compared to the inverse axion periodicity, as a result of two effects. First, couplings to the QED theta angle are suppressed for axion mass eigenstates that are light compared to the mass scale set by stringy instantons on the cycle supporting QED. Second, in compactifications with many axions the intersection matrix is sparse, making kinetic mixing weak. We study the resulting phenomenology in an ensemble of $200{,}000$ toy models constructed from the Kreuzer-Skarke database up to the maximum Hodge number $h^{1,1}=491$. We examine freeze-in production and decay of thermal axions, birefringence of the cosmic microwave background, X-ray spectrum oscillations, and constraints on the QCD axion from supernovae. We conclude that compactifications in this corner of the landscape involve many invisible axions, as well as a handful that may be detectable via photon couplings.

Orientifolding Kreuzer-Skarke

We develop tools that allow the systematic enumeration of inequivalent holomorphic orientifolds of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric fourfolds of arbitrary Hodge numbers. As examples, we construct an orientifold of the Calabi-Yau hypersurface with largest known Hodge number $h^{1,1}=491$, as well as an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface with $h^{1,1}=243$ that yields a large orientifold-odd Hodge number $h^{1,1}_-=120$.

Computational Mirror Symmetry

We present an efficient algorithm for computing the prepotential in compactifications of type II string theory on mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau threefolds in toric varieties. Applying this method, we exhibit the first systematic computation of genus-zero Gopakumar-Vafa invariants in compact threefolds with many moduli, including examples with up to 491 vector multiplets.

Moduli Space Reconstruction and Weak Gravity

We present a method to construct the extended K\"ahler cone of any Calabi-Yau threefold by using Gopakumar-Vafa invariants to identify all geometric phases that are related by flops or Weyl reflections. In this way we obtain the K\"ahler moduli spaces of all favorable Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces with $h^{1,1} \le 4$, including toric and non-toric phases. In this setting we perform an explicit test of the Weak Gravity Conjecture by using the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants to count BPS states. All of our examples satisfy the tower/sublattice WGC, and in fact they even satisfy the stronger lattice WGC.

Superpotentials from Singular Divisors

We study Euclidean D3-branes wrapping divisors $D$ in Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. Witten's counting of fermion zero modes in terms of the cohomology of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_D$ applies when $D$ is smooth, but we argue that effective divisors of Calabi-Yau threefolds typically have singularities along rational curves. We generalize the counting of fermion zero modes to such singular divisors, in terms of the cohomology of the structure sheaf $\mathcal{O}_{\overline{D}}$ of the normalization $\overline{D}$ of $D$. We establish this by detailing compactifications in which the singularities can be unwound by passing through flop transitions, giving a physical incarnation of the normalization process. Analytically continuing the superpotential through the flops, we find that singular divisors whose normalizations are rigid can contribute to the superpotential: specifically, $h^{\bullet}_{+}(\mathcal{O}_{\overline{D}})=(1,0,0)$ and $h^{\bullet}_{-}(\mathcal{O}_{\overline{D}})=(0,0,0)$ give a sufficient condition for a contribution. The examples that we present feature infinitely many isomorphic geometric phases, with corresponding infinite-order monodromy groups $\Gamma$. We use the action of $\Gamma$ on effective divisors to determine the exact effective cones, which have infinitely many generators. The resulting nonperturbative superpotentials are Jacobi theta functions, whose modular symmetries suggest the existence of strong-weak coupling dualities involving inversion of divisor volumes.

Conifold Vacua with Small Flux Superpotential

We introduce a method for finding flux vacua of type IIB string theory in which the flux superpotential is exponentially small and at the same time one or more complex structure moduli are stabilized exponentially near to conifold points.

A Cosmological Constant That is Too Small

We construct a vacuum of string theory in which the magnitude of the vacuum energy is $< 10^{-123}$ in Planck units. Regrettably, the sign of the vacuum energy is negative, and some supersymmetry remains unbroken.

Small Cosmological Constants in String Theory

We construct supersymmetric $\mathrm{AdS}_4$ vacua of type IIB string theory in compactifications on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces. We first find explicit orientifolds and quantized fluxes for which the superpotential takes the form proposed by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde, and Trivedi. Given very mild assumptions on the numerical values of the Pfaffians, these compactifications admit vacua in which all moduli are stabilized at weak string coupling. By computing high-degree Gopakumar-Vafa invariants we give strong evidence that the $α'$ expansion is likewise well-controlled. We find extremely small cosmological constants, with magnitude $ < 10^{-123}$ in Planck units. The compactifications are large, but not exponentially so, and hence these vacua manifest hierarchical scale-separation, with the AdS length exceeding the Kaluza-Klein length by a factor of a googol.

PQ Axiverse

We show that the strong CP problem is solved in a large class of compactifications of string theory. The Peccei-Quinn mechanism solves the strong CP problem if the CP-breaking effects of the ultraviolet completion of gravity and of QCD are small compared to the CP-preserving axion potential generated by low-energy QCD instantons. We characterize both classes of effects. To understand quantum gravitational effects, we consider an ensemble of flux compactifications of type IIB string theory on orientifolds of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in the geometric regime, taking a simple model of QCD on D7-branes. We show that the D-brane instanton contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment falls exponentially in $N^4$, with $N$ the number of axions. In particular, this contribution is negligible in all models in our ensemble with $N>17$. We interpret this result as a consequence of large $N$ effects in the geometry that create hierarchies in instanton actions and also suppress the ultraviolet cutoff. We also compute the CP breaking due to high-energy instantons in QCD. In the absence of vectorlike pairs, we find contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment that are not excluded, but that could be accessible to future experiments if the scale of supersymmetry breaking is sufficiently low. The existence of vectorlike pairs can lead to a larger dipole moment. Finally, we show that a significant fraction of models are allowed by standard cosmological and astrophysical constraints.

Resolving spacetime singularities in flux compactifications & KKLT

In flux compactifications of type IIB string theory with D3 and seven-branes, the negative induced D3 charge localized on seven-branes leads to an apparently pathological profile of the metric sufficiently close to the source. With the volume modulus stabilized in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum this pathological region takes over a significant part of the entire compactification, threatening to spoil the KKLT effective field theory. In this paper we employ the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory to argue that wrapped seven-branes can be thought of as bound states of more microscopic exotic branes. We argue that the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of a stack of $n$ such exotic branes is given by the $(A_1,A_{n-1})$ Argyres-Douglas theory. Moreover, the splitting of the perturbative (in $α'$) seven-brane into its constituent branes at the non-perturbative level resolves the apparently pathological region close to the seven-brane and replaces it with a region of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ Einstein frame volume. While this region generically takes up an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ fraction of the compactification in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum we argue that a small flux superpotential \textit{dynamically} ensures that the 4d effective field theory of KKLT remains valid nevertheless.

A landscape of orientifold vacua

We present a vast landscape of O3/O7 orientifolds that descends from the famous set of complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds (CICY). We give distributions of topological data relevant for phenomenology such as the orientifold-odd Hodge numbers, the D3-tadpole, and multiplicities of O3 and O7-planes. Somewhat surprisingly, almost all of these orientifolds have conifold singularities whose deformation branches are projected out by the orientifolding. However, they can be resolved, so most of the orientifolds actually descend from a much larger and possibly new set of CY threefolds that can be reached from the CICYs via conifold transitions. We observe an interesting class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ geometric transitions involving colliding O-planes. Finally, as an application, we use our dataset to produce examples of orientifolds that satisfy the topological requirements for the existence of ultra-light throat axions (\textit{thraxions}) as proposed in \cite{Hebecker:2018yxs}. The database can be accessed at https://www.desy.de/~westphal/orientifold_webpage/cicy_orientifolds.html

Vacua with Small Flux Superpotential

We describe a method for finding flux vacua of type IIB string theory in which the Gukov-Vafa-Witten superpotential is exponentially small. We present an example with $W_0 \approx 2 \times 10^{-8}$ on an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau hypersurface with $(h^{1,1},h^{2,1})=(2,272)$, at large complex structure and weak string coupling.

Thraxions: Ultralight Throat Axions

We argue that a new type of extremely light axion is generically present in the type IIB part of the string theory landscape. Its mass is suppressed by the third power of the warp factor of a strongly warped region (Klebanov-Strassler throat), suggesting the name thraxion. Our observation is based on the generic presence of several throats sharing the same 2-cycle. This cycle shrinks to zero volume at the end of each throat. It is hence trivial in homology and the corresponding $C_2$ axion is massive. However, the mass is warping-suppressed since, if one were to cut off the strongly warped regions, a proper 2-cycle would re-emerge. Since the kinetic term of the axion is dominated in the UV, an even stronger, quadratic mass suppression results. Moreover, if the axion is excited, the angular modes of the throats backreact. This gives our effective $C_2$ axion a finite monodromy and flattens its potential even further. Eventually, the mass turns out to scale as the third power of the warp factor. We briefly discuss possible implications for phenomenology and potential violations of the Weak Gravity Conjecture for axions. Moreover we identify a mechanism for generating super-Planckian axionic field ranges which we call drifting monodromies. However, in the examples we consider, the potential oscillates on sub-Planckian distances in field space, preventing us from building a natural inflation model on the basis of this idea.

Gaugino condensation and small uplifts in KKLT

In the first part of this note we argue that ten dimensional consistency requirements in the form of a certain tadpole cancellation condition can be satisfied by KKLT type vacua of type IIB string theory. We explain that a new term of non-local nature is generated dynamically once supersymmetry is broken and ensures cancellation of the tadpole. It can be interpreted as the stress caused by the restoring force that the stabilization mechanism exerts on the volume modulus. In the second part, we explain that it is surprisingly difficult to engineer sufficiently long warped throats to prevent decompactification which are also small enough in size to fit into the bulk Calabi-Yau (CY). We give arguments that achieving this with reasonable amount of control may not be possible in generic CY compactifications while CYs with very non-generic geometrical properties might evade our conclusion.
