On simple groups definable in some valued fields

We prove that non-abelian definable, definably simple groups in 1-h-minimal henselian valued fields are essentially already linear algebraic groups. Here, the group is assumed to live in the home sort. We have a similar result in pure algebraically closed valued fields of positive characteristic, under the additional assumption that the definable group is a subgroup of a linear algebraic group.

Beta distribution and associated Stirling numbers of the second kind

This article gives a formula for associated Stirling numbers of the second kind based on the moment of a sum of independent random variables having a beta distribution. From this formula we deduce, using probabilistic approaches, lower and upper bounds for these numbers.

Metric ultraproducts of groups -- simplicity, perfectness and torsion

We characterise the simplicity of metric ultraproducts of a family of metric groups. We also present several new examples of simple groups, such as metric ultraproducts of finite and infinite symmetric groups, linear groups, and interval exchange transformation groups. Using similar methods, we also examine concepts such as genericity, perfectness, and torsion.

Bohr compactifications of groups and rings

We introduce and study model-theoretic connected components of rings as an analogue of model-theoretic connected components of definable groups. We develop their basic theory and use them to describe both the definable and classical Bohr compactifications of rings. We then use model-theoretic connected components to explicitly calculate Bohr compactifications of some classical matrix groups, such as the discrete Heisenberg group $UT_3(Z)$, the continuous Heisenberg group $UT_3(R)$, and, more generally, groups of upper unitriangular and invertible upper triangular matrices over unital rings.

On Dual surjunctivity and applications

We explore the dual version of Gottschalk's conjecture recently introduced by Capobianco, Kari, and Taati, and the notion of dual surjunctivity in general. We show that dual surjunctive groups satisfy Kaplansky's direct finiteness conjecture for all fields of positive characteristic. By quantifying the notions of injectivity and post-surjectivity for cellular automata, we show that the image of the full topological shift under an injective cellular automaton is a subshift of finite type in a quantitative way. Moreover we show that dual surjunctive groups are closed under ultraproducts, under elementary equivalence, and under certain semidirect products (using the ideas of Arzhantseva and Gal for the latter); they form a closed subset in the space of marked groups, fully residually dual surjunctive groups are dual surjunctive, etc. We also consider dual surjunctive systems for more general dynamical systems, namely for certain expansive algebraic actions, employing results of Chung and Li.

Uniform symplicity of groups with proximal action

We prove that groups acting boundedly and order-primitively on linear orders or acting extremly proximality on a Cantor set (the class including various Higman-Thomson groups and Neretin groups of almost automorphisms of regular trees, also called groups of spheromorphisms) are uniformly simple. Explicit bounds are provided.

On model-theoretic connected components in some group extensions

We analyze model-theoretic connected components in extensions of a given group by abelian groups which are defined by means of 2-cocycles with finite image. We characterize, in terms of these 2-cocycles, when the smallest type-definable subgroup of the corresponding extension differs from the smallest invariant subgroup. In some situations, we also describe the quotient of these two connected components. Using our general results about extensions of groups together with Matsumoto-Moore theory or various quasi-characters considered in bounded cohomology, we obtain new classes of examples of groups whose smallest type-definable subgroup of bounded index differs from the smallest invariant subgroup of bounded index. This includes the first known example of a group with this property found by Conversano and Pillay, namely the universal cover of SL2(R) (intepreted in a monster model), as well as various examples of different nature, e.g. some central extensions of free groups or of fundamental groups of closed orientable surfaces. We also obtain a variant of the example of Conversano and Pillay for SL2(Z) instead of SL2(R), which (as most of our examples) was not accessible by the previously known methods.

On compactifications and the topological dynamics of definable groups

We discuss definable compactifications and topological dynamics. For G a group definable in some structure M, we define notions of "definable" compactification of G and "definable" action of G on a compact space X (definable G-flow), where the latter is under a definability of types assumption on M. We describe the universal definable compactification of G as G*/G*00_M and the universal definable G-ambit as the type space S_{G}(M). We also prove existence and uniqueness of "universal minimal definable G-flows", and discuss issues of amenability and extreme amenability in this definable category, with a characterization of the latter. For the sake of completeness we also describe the universal (Bohr) compactification and universal G-ambit in model-theoretic terms, when G is a topological group (although it is essentially well-known).

Absolute connectedness and classical groups

We introduce and develop the model-theoretic notions of absolute connectedness and type-absolute connectedness for groups. We prove that groups of rational points of split semisimple linear groups (that is, Chevalley groups) over arbitrary infinite fields are absolutely connected and characterize connected Lie groups which are type-absolutely connected. We prove that the class of type-absolutely connected group is exactly the class of discretely topologized groups with trivial Bohr compactification, that is the class of minimally almost periodic groups. As an application we generalize some results of Conversano-Pillay and construct a group $G$ where G^{00}/G^{\infty} is far from being abelian.

Model theoretic connected components of finitely generated nilpotent groups

We prove that for a finitely generated infinite nilpotent group G with a first order structure (G,*,...), the connected component G*0 of a sufficiently saturated extension G* of G exists and equals $\bigcap_{n\in\N} {g^n : g\in G^*}$. We construct a first order expansion of Z by a predicate (Z,+,P) such that the type-connected component Z*00_{\emptyset} is strictly smaller than Z*0. We generalize this to finitely generated virtually solvable groups. As a corollary of our construction we obtain an optimality result for the van der Waerden theorem.

Some model theory of SL(2,R)

We study the action of G = SL(2,R) on its type space S_G(R) where R denotes the field of real numbers. We identify a minimal closed G-flow I, and an idempotent r of I (with the respect to the Ellis semigroup structure * on I). We show that the group (r*I,*) has 2 elements, yielding a negative answer to a question of Newelski.

Boundedly simple groups of automorphisms of trees

A group is boundedly simple if, for some constant N, every nontrivial conjugacy class generates the whole group in N steps. For a large class of trees, Tits proved simplicity of a canonical subgroup of the automorphism group, which is generated by pointwise stabilizers of edges. We prove that only for uniform subdivisions of biregular trees are such groups boundedly simple. In fact these groups are 8-boundedly simple. As a consequence, we prove that if G is boundedly simple (or from a certain class K) and G acts by automorphisms on a tree, then G fixes some vertex of A, or stabilizes some end of A, or the smallest nonempty G-invariant subtree of A is a uniform subdivision of a biregular tree.

A remark on groups without finite quotients

We notice that the class of nontrivial groups without proper subgroups of finite index is not elementary, because some groups in this class, such as $\mathbb Q*\mathbb Q$, have ultrapowers that map homomorphically onto $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ for every prime $p$. Also, some ultrapowers of certain simple groups map homomorphically onto $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$.

Model theoretic connected components of groups

We give a general exposition of model theoretic connected components of groups. We show that if a group G has NIP, then there exists the smallest invariant (over some small set) subgroup of G with bounded index (Theorem 5.3). This result extends theorem of Shelah. We consider also in this context the multiplicative and the additive groups of some rings (including infite fields).

G-Compactness and Groups

Lascar described E_KP as a composition of E_L and the topological closure of EL. We generalize this result to some other pairs of equivalence relations. Motivated by an attempt to construct a new example of a non-G-compact theory, we consider the following example. Assume G is a group definable in a structure M. We define a structure M_0 consisting of M and X as two sorts, where X is an affine copy of G and in M_0 we have the structure of M and the action of G on X. We prove that the Lascar group of M_0 is a semi-direct product of the Lascar group of M and G/G_L. We discuss the relationship between G-compactness of M and M_0. This example may yield new examples of non-G-compact theories.

Combinatorial geometries of field extensions

We classify the algebraic combinatorial geometries of arbitrary field extensions of transcendence degree greater than 4 and describe their groups of automorphisms. Our results and proofs extend similar results and proofs by Evans and Hrushovski in the case of algebraically closed fields. The classification of projective planes in algebraic combinatorial geometries in arbitrary fields of characteristic zero will also be given.
