Radiofrequency plasma spheroidization of lightweight complex concentrated superalloy Al10Nb20Ta15Ti30V5Zr20

Recent advances in additive manufacturing (AM) have significantly increased the demand for high-quality metal powders with tailored composition. For refractory complex concentrated alloys (RCCA) preparing such powders by conventional metallurgical method remains challenging due to their high melting point and chemical reactivity. In this paper, we present a method to produce spherical RCCA powders (here Al10Nb20Ta15Ti30V5Zr20) via mechanical alloying followed by radio-frequency inductively coupled plasma spheroidization. The resulting powder is suitable for AM processes because of its spherical morphology and a microstructure consisting of major BCC phases with local B2 phase. Complex carbide formation was studied by 3D atom probe tomography.
