Degenerate Cahn-Hilliard equation: From nonlocal to local

There has been recently an important interest in deriving rigorously the Cahn-Hilliard equation from the nonlocal equation, also called aggregation equation. So far, only non-degenerate mobilities were treated. Since we are motivated by models for the biomechanics of living tissues, it is useful to include degenerate motilities. In this framework, we present a new method to show the convergence of the nonlocal to the local degenerate Cahn-Hilliard equation. The method includes the use of nonlocal Poincaré and compactness inequalities.

Pressure jump and radial stationary solutions of the degenerate Cahn-Hilliard equation

The Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility is used in several areas including the modeling of living tissues. We are interested in quantifying the pressure jump at the interface in the case of incompressible flows. To do so, we include an external force and consider stationary radial solutions. This allows us to compute the pressure jump in the small dispersion regime. We also characterize compactly supported stationary solutions in the incompressible case, prove the incompressible limit and prove convergence of the parabolic problems to stationary states.

Non-Newtonian fluids with discontinuous-in-time stress tensor

We consider the system of equations describing the flow of incompressible fluids in bounded domain. In the considered setting, the Cauchy stress tensor is a monotone mapping and has asymptotically $(s-1)$-growth with the parameter $s$ depending on the spatial and time variable. We do not assume any smoothness of $s$ with respect to time variable and assume the log-Hölder continuity with respect to spatial variable. Such a setting is a natural choice if the material properties are instantaneously, e.g. by the switched electric field. We establish the long time and the large data existence of weak solution provided that $s\ge(3d+2)(d+2)$.

From Vlasov equation to degenerate nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation

We provide a rigorous mathematical framework to establish the hydrodynamic limit of the Vlasov model introduced by Noguchi and Takata in order to describe phase transition of fluids by kinetic equations. We prove that, when the scale parameter tends to 0, this model converges to a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility. For our analysis, we introduce apropriate forms of the short and long range potentials which allow us to derive Helmhotlz free energy estimates. Several compactness properties follow from the energy, the energy dissipation and kinetic averaging lemmas. In particular we prove a new weak compactness bound on the flux.

Measure Differential Equation with a Nonlinear Growth/Decay Term

We obtain an existence result for a Measure Differential Equation with an additional nonlinear growth/decay term that may change the sign. The proof requires a modification of approximating schemes proposed by Piccoli and Rossi. The new scheme combines model discretisation with the exponential solution of the nonlinear growth/decay and hence preserves nonnegativity of the measure. Furthermore, we formulate a simpler analytic condition on the Measure Vector Field which substantially simplifies the previous proof of continuity of solutions with respect to initial data.

On a range of exponents for absence of Lavrentiev phenomenon for double phase functionals

For a class of functionals having the $(p,q)$-growth, we establish an improved range of exponents $p$, $q$ for which the Lavrentiev phenomenon does not occur. The proof is based on a standard mollification argument and Young convolution inequality. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we observe that it is sufficient to regularise only bounded functions. Second, we exploit the $L^{\infty}$ bound on the function rather than the $L^p$ estimate on the gradient. Our proof does not rely on the properties of minimizers to variational problems but it is rather a consequence of the underlying Musielak-Orlicz function spaces. Moreover, our method works for unbounded boundary data, the variable exponent functionals and vectorial problems. In addition, the result seems to be optimal for $p\le d$.

Bayesian inference of a non-local proliferation model

From a systems biology perspective the majority of cancer models, although interesting and providing a qualitative explanation of some problems, have a major disadvantage in that they usually miss a genuine connection with experimental data. Having this in mind, in this paper, we aim at contributing to the improvement of many cancer models which contain a proliferation term. To this end, we propose a new non-local model of cell proliferation. We select data which are suitable to perform a Bayesian inference for unknown parameters and we provide a discussion on the range of applicability of the model. Furthermore, we provide proof of the stability of a posteriori distributions in total variation norm which exploits the theory of spaces of measures equipped with the weighted flat norm. In a companion paper, we provide a detailed proof of the well-posedness of the problem and we investigate the convergence of the EBT algorithm applied to solve the equation.

Convergence of the EBT method for a non-local model of cell proliferation with discontinuous interaction kernel

We consider the EBT algorithm (a particle method) for the non-local equation with a discontinuous interaction kernel. The main difficulty lies in the low regularity of the kernel which is not Lipschitz continuous, thus preventing the application of standard arguments. Therefore, we use the radial symmetry of the problem instead and transform it using spherical coordinates. The resulting equation has a Lipschitz kernel with only one singularity at zero. We introduce a new weighted flat norm and prove that the particle method converges in this norm. We also comment on the two-dimensional case which requires the application of the theory of measure spaces on general metric spaces and present numerical simulations confirming the theoretical results. In a companion paper, we apply the Bayesian method to fit parameters to this model and study its theoretical properties.

Fast reaction limit and forward-backward diffusion: a Radon-Nikodym approach

We consider two singular limits: fast reaction limit with nonmonotone nonlinearity and regularization of forward-backward diffusion equation. It was proved by Plotnikov that for cubic-type (nondegenerate) nonlinearities, the limit oscillates between at most three states. In this paper we make his argument more optimal and we sharpen the previous result: we use Radon-Nikodym theorem to obtain a pointwise identity characterizing the Young measure. As a consequence, we establish a simpler condition which implies Plotnikov result for piecewise affine functions. We also prove that the result is true if the Young measure is not supported in the so-called unstable zone, the fact observed in numerical simulations.

Parabolic equations in Musielak -- Orlicz spaces with discontinuous in time $N$-function

We consider a parabolic PDE with Dirichlet boundary condition and monotone operator $A$ with non-standard growth controlled by an $N$-function depending on time and spatial variable. We do not assume continuity in time for the $N$-function. Using an additional regularization effect coming from the equation, we establish the existence of weak solutions and in the particular case of isotropic $N$-function, we also prove their uniqueness. This general result applies to equations studied in the literature like $p(t,x)$-Laplacian and double-phase problems.

Fast reaction limit with nonmonotone reaction function

We analyse fast reaction limit in the reaction-diffusion system with nonmonotone reaction function and one non-diffusing component. As speed of reaction tends to infinity, the concentration of non-diffusing component exhibits fast oscillations. We identify precisely its Young measure which, as a by-product, proves strong convergence of the diffusing component, a result that is not obvious from a priori estimates. Our work is based on analysis of regularization for forward-backward parabolic equations by Plotnikov. We rewrite his ideas in terms of kinetic functions which clarifies the method, brings new insights, relaxes assumptions on model functions and provides a weak formulation for the evolution of the Young measure.

Measure solutions to perturbed structured population models - differentiability with respect to perturbation parameter

This paper is devoted to study measure solutions $μ_t^h$ to perturbed nonlinear structured population models where $t$ denotes time and $h$ controlls the size of perturbation. We address differentiability of the map $h \mapsto μ_t^h$. After showing that this type of results cannot be expected in the space of bounded Radon measures $\mathcal{M}(\mathbb{R}^+)$ equipped with the flat metric, we move to the slightly bigger spaces $Z = \overline{\mathcal{M}(\mathbb{R}^+)}^{(C^{1+α})^*}$. We prove that when $α> \frac{1}{2}$, the map $h \mapsto μ_t^h$ is differentiable in $Z$. The proof exploits approximation scheme of a nonlinear problem from previous studies and is based on the iteration of an implicit integral equations obtained from study of the linear equation. The result shows that space $Z$ is a promising setting for optimal control of phenomena governed by such type of models.
