Scar States in Deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Lattice Gauge Theories

The weak ergodicity breaking induced by quantum many-body scars (QMBS) represents an intriguing concept that has received great attention in recent years due to its relation to unusual non-equilibrium behaviour. Here we reveal that this phenomenon can occur in a previously unexplored regime of a lattice gauge theory, where QMBS emerge due to the presence of an extensive number of local constraints. In particular, by analyzing the gauged Kitaev model, we provide an example where QMBS appear in a regime where charges are deconfined. By means of both numerical and analytical approaches, we find a variety of scarred states far away from the regime where the model is integrable. The presence of these states is revealed both by tracing them directly from the analytically reachable limit, as well as by quantum quenches showing persistent oscillations for specific initial states.

A systematic construction of Gaussian basis sets for the description of laser field ionization and high-harmonic generation

A precise understanding of mechanisms governing the dynamics of electrons in atoms and molecules subjected to intense laser fields has a key importance for the description of attosecond processes such as the high-harmonic generation and ionization. From the theoretical point of view, this is still a challenging task, as new approaches to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with both good accuracy and efficiency are still emerging. Until recently, the purely numerical methods of real-time propagation of the wavefunction using finite grids have been frequently and successfully used to capture the electron dynamics in small one- or two-electron systems. However, as the main focus of attoscience shifts toward many-electron systems, such techniques are no longer effective and need to be replaced by more approximate but computationally efficient ones. In this paper, we explore the increasingly popular method of expanding the wavefunction of the examined system into a linear combination of atomic orbitals and present a novel systematic scheme for constructing an optimal Gaussian basis set suitable for the description of excited and continuum atomic or molecular states. We analyze the performance of the proposed basis sets by carrying out a series of time-dependent configuration interaction calculations for the hydrogen atom in fields of intensity varying from $5 \times 10^{13}\:\rm W/cm^2$ to $5 \times 10^{14}\:\rm W/cm^2$. We also compare the results with the data obtained using Gaussian basis sets proposed previously by other authors.

Phase diagram of 1+1D Abelian-Higgs model and its critical point

We determine the phase diagram of the Abelian-Higgs model in one spatial dimension and time (1+1D) on a lattice. We identify a line of first order phase transitions separating the Higgs region from the confined one. This line terminates in a quantum critical point above which the two regions are connected by a smooth crossover. We analyze the critical point and find compelling evidences for its description as the product of two non-interacting systems, a massless free fermion and a massless free boson. However, we find also some surprizing results that cannot be explained by our simple picture, suggesting this newly discovered critical point to be an unusual one.

Many-body localization regime for cavity induced long-range interacting models

Many-body localization (MBL) features are studied here for a large spin chain model with long range interactions. The model corresponds to cold atoms placed inside a cavity and driven by an external laser field with long range interactions coming from rescattering of cavity photons. Earlier studies were limited to small sizes amenable to exact diagonalization. It is shown that nonergodic features and MBL may exist in this model for random disorder as well as in the presence of tilted potential on experimental time scales also for experimentally relevant system sizes using tensor networks algorithms.

Finite-Size scaling analysis of many-body localization transition in quasi-periodic spin chains

We analyze the finite-size scaling of the average gap-ratio and the entanglement entropy across the many-body localization (MBL) transition in one dimensional Heisenberg spin-chain with quasi-periodic (QP) potential. By using the recently introduced cost-function approach, we compare different scenarios for the transition using exact diagonalization of systems up to 22 lattice sites. Our findings suggest that the MBL transition in the QP Heisenberg chain belongs to the class of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, the same as in the case of uniformly disordered systems as advocated in recent studies. Moreover, we observe that the critical disorder strength shows a clear sub-linear drift with the system-size as compared to the linear drift seen in random disordered models, suggesting that the finite-size effects in the MBL transition for the QP systems are less severe than that in the random disordered scenario. Moreover, deep in the ergodic regime, we find an unexpected double-peak structure of distribution of on-site magnetizations that can be traced back to the strong correlations present in the QP potential.

On intermediate statistics across many-body localization transition

The level statistics in the transition between delocalized and localized {phases of} many body interacting systems is {considered}. We recall the joint probability distribution for eigenvalues resulting from the statistical mechanics for energy level dynamics as introduced by Pechukas and Yukawa. The resulting single parameter analytic distribution is probed numerically {via Monte Carlo method}. The resulting higher order spacing ratios are compared with data coming from different {quantum many body systems}. It is found that this Pechukas-Yukawa distribution compares favorably with {$β$--Gaussian ensemble -- a single parameter model of level statistics proposed recently in the context of disordered many-body systems.} {Moreover, the Pechukas-Yukawa distribution is also} only slightly inferior to the two-parameter $β$-h ansatz shown {earlier} to reproduce {level statistics of} physical systems remarkably well.

Optical lattice for tripod-like atomic level structure

Standard optical potentials use off-resonant laser standing wave induced AC-Stark shift. In a recent development [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 117}, 233001 (2016)] a three-level scheme in $Λ$ configuration coupled coherently by resonant laser fields was introduced leading to an effective lattice with subwavelength potential peaks. Here as an extension of that work to a four level atomic setup in the tripod configuration is used to create spin $1/2$-like two-dimensional dark-space with 1D motion and the presence of external gauge fields. Most interestingly for a possible application, the lifetime for a dark subspace motion is up to two orders of magnitude larger than for a similar $Λ$ system. The model is quite flexible leading to lattices with significant nearest, next-nearest, or next-next-nearest hopping rates, $J_1,J_2,J_3$ opening up new intriguing possibilities to study, e.g. frustrated systems. The characteristic Wannier functions lead also to new type of inter-site interactions not realizable in typical optical lattices.

Detecting ergodic bubbles at the crossover to many-body localization using neural networks

The transition between ergodic and many-body localized phases is expected to occur via an avalanche mechanism, in which \emph{ergodic bubbles} that arise due to local fluctuations in system properties thermalize their surroundings leading to delocalization of the system, unless the disorder is sufficiently strong to stop this process. We propose an algorithm based on neural networks that allows to detect the ergodic bubbles using experimentally measurable two-site correlation functions. Investigating time evolution of the system, we observe a logarithmic in time growth of the ergodic bubbles in the MBL regime. The distribution of the size of ergodic bubbles converges during time evolution to an exponentially decaying distribution in the MBL regime, and a power-law distribution with a thermal peak in the critical regime, supporting thus the scenario of delocalization through the avalanche mechanism. Our algorithm permits to pin-point quantitative differences in time evolution of systems with random and quasiperiodic potentials, as well as to identify rare (Griffiths) events. Our results open new pathways in studies of the mechanisms of thermalization of disordered many-body systems and beyond.

Confinement and lack of thermalization after quenches in the bosonic Schwinger model

We excite the vacuum of a relativistic theory of bosons coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field in 1+1 dimensions (bosonic Schwinger model) out of equilibrium by creating a spatially separated particle-antiparticle pair connected by a string of electric field. During the evolution, we observe a strong confinement of bosons witnessed by the bending of their light cone, reminiscent of what has been observed for the Ising model [Nat. Phys. 13, 246 (2017)]. As a consequence, for the time scales we are able to simulate, the system evades thermalization and generates exotic asymptotic states. These states are made of two disjoint regions, an external deconfined region that seems to thermalize, and an inner core that reveals an area-law saturation of the entanglement entropy.

Self-organized topological insulator due to cavity-mediated correlated tunneling

Topological materials have potential applications for quantum technologies. Non-interacting topological materials, such as e.g., topological insulators and superconductors, are classified by means of fundamental symmetry classes. It is instead only partially understood how interactions affect topological properties. Here, we discuss a model where topology emerges from the quantum interference between single-particle dynamics and global interactions. The system is composed by soft-core bosons that interact via global correlated hopping in a one-dimensional lattice. The onset of quantum interference leads to spontaneous breaking of the lattice translational symmetry, the corresponding phase resembles nontrivial states of the celebrated Su-Schriefer-Heeger model. Like the fermionic Peierls instability, the emerging quantum phase is a topological insulator and is found at half fillings. Originating from quantum interference, this topological phase is found in "exact" density-matrix renormalization group calculations and is entirely absent in the mean-field approach. We argue that these dynamics can be realized in existing experimental platforms, such as cavity quantum electrodynamics setups, where the topological features can be revealed in the light emitted by the resonator.

Many-body localization in tilted and harmonic potentials

We discuss nonergodic dynamics of interacting spinless fermions in a tilted optical lattice as modeled by XXZ spin chain in magnetic (or electric) field changing linearly across the chain. The time dynamics is studied using exact propagation for small chains and matrix product states techniques for larger system sizes. We consider both the initial Néel separable state as well as the quantum quench scenario in which the initial state may be significantly entangled. We show that the entanglement dynamics is significantly different in both cases. In the former a rapid initial growth is followed by a saturation for sufficiently large tilt, $F$. In the latter case the dynamics seems to be dominated by pair tunneling and the effective tunneling rate scales as $1/F^2$. In the presence of an additional harmonic potential the imbalance is found to be entirely determined by a local effective tilt, $F_{\text{loc}}$, the entanglement entropy growth is modulated with frequency that follows $1/F_{loc}^2$ scaling first but at long time the dynamics is determined rather by the curvature of the harmonic potential. Only for large tilts or sufficiently large curvatures, corresponding to the deeply localized regime, we find the logarithmic entanglement growth for Néel initial state. The same curvature determines long-time imbalance for large $F$ which reveals strong revival phenomena associated with the manifold of equally spaced states, degenerate in the absence of the harmonic potential.

Cold atoms meet lattice gauge theory

The central idea of this review is to consider quantum field theory models relevant for particle physics and replace the fermionic matter in these models by a bosonic one. This is mostly motivated by the fact that bosons are more ``accessible'' and easier to manipulate for experimentalists, but this ``substitution'' also leads to new physics and novel phenomena. It allows us to gain new information about among other things confinement and the dynamics of the deconfinement transition. We will thus consider bosons in dynamical lattices corresponding to the bosonic Schwinger or Z$_2$ Bose-Hubbard models. Another central idea of this review concerns atomic simulators of paradigmatic models of particle physics theory such as the Creutz-Hubbard ladder, or Gross-Neveu-Wilson and Wilson-Hubbard models. Finally, we will briefly describe our efforts to design experimentally friendly simulators of these and other models relevant for particle physics.

Nonergodic dynamics in disorder-free potentials

We review the dynamics of interacting particles in disorder-free potentials concentrating on a combination of a harmonic binding with a constant tilt. We show that a simple picture of an effective local tilt describes a variety of cases. Our examples include spinless fermions (as modeled by Heisenberg spin chain in a magnetic field), spinful fermions as well as bosons that enjoy a larger local on-site Hilbert space. We also discuss the domain-wall dynamics that reveals nonergodic features even for a relatively weak tilt as suggested by Doggen et. al. [arXiv:2012.13722]. By adding a harmonic potential on top of the static field we confirm that the surprizing regular dynamics is not entirely due to Hilbert space shuttering. It seems better explained by the inhibited transport within the domains of identically oriented spins. Once the spin-1/2 restrictions are lifted as, e.g., for bosons, the dynamics involve stronger entanglement generation. Again for domain wall melting, the effect of the harmonic potential is shown to lead mainly to an effective local tilt.

Three-electron correlations in strong laser field ionization: Spin induced effects

Strong field processes in the non-relativistic regime are insensitive to the electron spin, i.e. the observables appear to be independent of this electron property. This does not have to be the case for several active electrons where Pauli principle may affect the their dynamics. We exemplify this statement studying model atoms with three active electrons interacting with strong pulsed radiation, using an ab-initio time-dependent Schrödinger equation on a grid. In our restricted dimensionality model we are able, for the first time, to analyse momenta correlations of the three outgoing electrons using Dalitz plots. We show that significant differences are obtained between model Neon and Nitrogen atoms. These differences are traced back to the different symmetries of the electronic wavefunctions, and directly related to the different initial state spin components.

Constraints induced delocalization

We study the impact of quenched disorder on the dynamics of locally constrained quantum spin chains, that describe 1D arrays of Rydberg atoms in both frozen (Ising-type) and dressed (XY-type) regime. Performing large-scale numerical experiments, we observe no trace of many-body localization even at large disorder. Analyzing the role of quenched disorder terms in constrained systems we show that they act in two, distinct and competing ways: as an on-site disorder term for the basic excitations of the system, and as an interaction between excitations. The two contributions are of the same order, and as they compete (one towards localization, the other against it), one does never enter a truly strong disorder, weak interaction limit, where many-body localization occurs. Such a mechanism is further clarified in the case of XY-type constrained models: there, a term which would represent a bona-fide local quenched disorder term acting on the excitations of the clean model must be written as a series of non-local terms in the unconstrained variables. Our observations provide a simple picture to interpret the role of quenched disorder that could be immediately extended to other constrained models or quenched gauge theories.

A dark state of Chern bands: Designing flat bands with higher Chern number

We introduce a scheme by which flat bands with higher Chern number $\vert C\vert>1$ can be designed in ultracold gases through a coherent manipulation of Bloch bands. Inspired by quantum-optics methods, our approach consists in creating a "dark Bloch band" by coupling a set of source bands through resonant processes. Considering a $Λ$ system of three bands, the Chern number of the dark band is found to follow a simple sum rule in terms of the Chern numbers of the source bands: $C_D\!=\!C_1+C_2-C_3$. Altogether, our dark-state scheme realizes a nearly flat Bloch band with predictable and tunable Chern number $C_D$. We illustrate our method based on a $Λ$ system, formed of the bands of the Harper-Hofstadter model, which leads to a nearly flat Chern band with $C_D\!=\!2$. We explore a realistic sequence to load atoms into the dark Chern band, as well as a probing scheme based on Hall drift measurements. Dark Chern bands offer a practical platform where exotic fractional quantum Hall states could be realized in ultracold gases.

Strong-field triple ionization of atoms with $p^3$ valence shell

The interaction of strong pulsed femtosecond laser field with atoms having three equivalent electrons in the outer shell ($p^3$ configuration, e.g. nitrogen) is studied via numerical integration of a time-dependent Schrödinger equation on a grid approach. Single, double and triple ionization yields originating from a completely antisymmetric wave function are calculated and extracted using a restricted-geometry model with the soft-core potential and three active electrons. The direct triple ionization channel is found to produce a larger yield than the channel connected with single and then direct double ionization. Compared against earlier results investigating the $n s^ 2 n p^1$ configuration, we propose that the differences found here might in fact be accessible through electron's momentum distribution.

Many-body localization with synthetic gauge fields in disordered Hubbard chains

We analyze the localization properties of the disordered Hubbard model in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field. An analysis of level spacing ratio shows a clear transition from ergodic to many-body localized phase. The transition shifts to larger disorder strengths with increasing magnetic flux. Study of dynamics of local correlations and entanglement entropy indicates that charge excitations remain localized whereas spin degree of freedom gets delocalized in the presence of the synthetic flux. This residual ergodicity is enhanced by the presence of the magnetic field with dynamical observables suggesting incomplete localization at large disorder strengths. Furthermore, we examine the effect of quantum statistics on the local correlations and show that the long-time spin oscillations of a hard-core boson system are destroyed as opposed to the fermionic case.
