Average $p_t$ as a probe of high energy QCD dynamics

Average transverse momentum of hadrons produced in high energy collisions is proposed as a diagnostic probe of high density (saturation) physics. We show that by introducing and varying a transverse momentum cutoff in the definition of the average transverse momentum, one can eliminate the uncertainty in the overall magnitude of the leading order hadron production cross section in high energy collisions, and semi-quantitatively map the different dynamical regions predicted by the saturation physics. We discuss the applications of this method to pion production at RHIC and LHC and make quantitative predictions for the average transverse momentum of produced pions in the kinematics appropriate for the RHIC and LHC experiments.

Rapidity dependence of the photon to pion production ratio in high energy collisions

We investigate rapidity dependence of the ratio of photon and pion production cross sections in high energy proton (deuteron) - nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC. This ratio, and its rapidity dependence can be a sensitive probe of high density QCD (Color Glass Condensate) dynamics and shed further light on the role of saturation physics at RHIC and LHC.

Drell-Yan production and Lam-Tung relation in the Color Glass Condensate formalism

We study the Drell-Yan production cross section and structure functions in proton (deuteron)-nucleus collisions using the Color Glass Condensate formalism. The nucleus is treated in the Color Glass Condensate framework which includes both higher twist effects due to the inclusion of multiple scatterings and leading twist pQCD shadowing due to the small x resummation, while the proton (or deuteron) is treated within the DGLAP improved parton model. In particular, the Drell-Yan structure functions are used in order to investigate the Lam-Tung relation at small x, which is known to be identically zero at leading twist up to Next-to-Leading order, and is thus a good playground for studying higher twist effects. In agreement with this, we find that violations of this relation are more important for low momentum and invariant mass of the Drell-Yan pair, and also in the region of rapidity that corresponds to smaller values of x in the nucleus.

Geometric scaling violations in the central rapidity region of d+Au collisions at RHIC

We show that geometric scaling is satisfied to good accuracy in the forward region of d+Au collisions at RHIC. Scaling violations do show up, however, at mid-rapidity, and the anomalous dimension of the small-x gluon distribution evolves to near its DGLAP limit for transverse momenta of a few GeV. This represents a first consistency check of RHIC deuteron-nucleus and HERA DIS phenomenology, and of the universality of the underlying Color Glass Condensate (CGC) theory, which describes both phenomena. It also reconciles successful leading-twist LO and NLO perturbative QCD computations of mid-rapidity particle production with small-x evolution. Finally, we introduce a new parameterization for the anomalous dimension of the small-x gluon distribution which properly reproduces known theoretical limits at large rapidity, at large virtuality, and on the saturation boundary, and still fits the available data from d+Au collisions at RHIC. We find indications that sub-asymptotic terms in the rapidity-evolution of the anomalous dimension are large.

Ultra-High Energy Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering and Parton Distributions at Small $x$

The cross section for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon scattering is very sensitive to the parton distributions at very small values of Bjorken x ($x \leq 10^{-4})$. We numerically investigate the effects of modifying the behavior of the gluon distribution function at very small $x$ in the DGLAP evolution equation. We then use the Color Glass Condensate formalism to calculate the neutrino-nucleon cross section at ultra-high energies and compare the result with those based on modification of DGLAP evolution equation.

Photon $+$ Hadron Production in High Energy Deuteron (Proton)-Nucleus Collisions

We apply the Color Glass Condensate formalism to photon $+$ hadron production cross section in high energy deuteron (proton)-gold collisions at RHIC. We investigate the dependence of the production cross section on the angle between the produced hadron and photon for various rapidities and transverse momenta. It is shown that the angular correlation between the produced hadron and photon is a sensitive probe of the saturation dynamics.

The Color Glass Condensate and hadron production in the forward region

We consider one loop corrections to single inclusive particle production in parton-nucleus scattering at high energies, treating the target nucleus as a Color Glass Condensate. We prove by explicit computation that in the leading log Q^2 approximation, these corrections lead to collinear factorization and DGLAP evolution of the projectile parton distribution and hadron fragmentation functions. At leading logarithmic level, and in single-inclusive cross sections, only two-point functions of Wilson lines in the adjoint and fundamental representations (Mueller's dipoles) arise, which can be obtained from the solution of the JIMWLK equations. The application of our results to forward-rapidity production at RHIC energy shows that, in general, recoil effects are large and that the forward rapidity region at RHIC is rather different from the central region at LHC, despite comparable gluon densities in the target. We show that both the quantum x-evolution of the high-density target as well as the DGLAP Q^2-evolution of the parton distribution and fragmentation functions are clearly seen in the BRAHMS data. This provides additional strong evidence for the Color Glass Condensate at RHIC.

Saturation Physics and Deuteron--Gold Collisions at RHIC

We present a review of parton saturation/Color Glass Condensate physics in the context of deuteron-gold ($d+Au$) collisions at RHIC. Color Glass Condensate physics is a universal description of all high energy hadronic and nuclear interactions. It comprises classical (McLerran-Venugopalan model and Glauber-Mueller rescatterings) and quantum evolution (JIMWLK and BK equations) effects both in small-$x$ hadronic and nuclear wave functions and in the high energy scattering processes. Proton-nucleus (or $d+A$) collisions present a unique opportunity to study Color Glass Condensate predictions, since many relevant observables in proton-nucleus collisions are reasonably well-understood theoretically in the Color Glass Condensate approach. In this article we review the basics of saturation/Color Glass Condensate physics and reproduce derivations of many important observables in proton (deuteron)--nucleus collisions. We compare the predictions of Color Glass physics to the data generated by $d+Au$ experiments at RHIC and observe an agreement between the data and the theory, indicating that Color Glass Condensate has probably been discovered at RHIC. We point out further experimental measurements which need to be carried out to test the discovery.

Inclusive Two-Gluon and Valence Quark-Gluon Production in DIS and pA

We calculate production cross sections of a forward quark-gluon pair and of two gluons at mid-rapidity in Deep Inelastic Scattering and in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. The calculation is performed in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We first calculate the cross sections in the quasi-classical approximation, which includes multiple rescatterings in the target. We then proceed to include the effects of non-linear small-x evolution in the production cross sections. It is interesting to note that our result for the two-gluon production cross section appears to be in direct violation of AGK cutting rules, which is the first example of such violation in QCD. The calculated quark-gluon and gluon-gluon production cross sections can be used to construct theoretical predictions for two-particle azimuthal correlations at RHIC and LHC (I^{p(d)A}) as well as for Deep Inelastic Scattering experiments at HERA and eRHIC.

Production of Forward Rapidity Photons in High Energy Heavy Ion Collisions

We consider production of prompt photons in high energy gold-gold and deuteron-gold collisions in the forward rapidity region of RHIC ($y \sim 3.8$). In this kinematics, the projectile partons typically have large $x_{bj}$ while the target partons are mostly at very small $x_{bj}$ so that the primary partonic collisions involve valence quarks from the projectile and gluons from the target. We take the target nucleus to be a Color Glass Condensate while the projectile deuteron or nucleus is treated as a dilute system of partons. We show that the photon production cross section can be written as a convolution of a quark-nucleus scattering cross section, involving a quark anti-quark dipole, with the Leading Order quark-photon fragmentation function. We consider different models of the quark anti-quark dipole and show that measurement of photons in the forward rapidity region at RHIC can distinguish between different parameterizations of the dipole cross section as well as help clarify the role of parton coalescence models in hadron production at RHIC.

Forward Rapidity Hadron Production in Deuteron Gold Collisions from Valence Quarks

We consider hadron production in deuteron gold collisions at RHIC in the forward rapidity region. Treating the target nucleus as a Color Glass Condensate and the projectile deuteron as a dilute system of valence quarks, we obtain good agreement with the BRAHMS minimum bias data on charged hadron production in the forward rapidity ($y=3.2$) and low $p_t$ region. We provide predictions for neutral pion production in minimum bias deuteron gold collisions in the forward rapidity region, $y=3.8$, measured by the STAR collaboration at RHIC.

Enhancement and Suppression of the Neutrino-Nucleon Total Cross Section at Ultra-High Energies

We argue that high gluon density effects at small $x$ are important for the calculation of ultra-high energy neutrino nucleon cross sections due to the phenomenon of geometric scaling. We calculate the cross section for $νN \to μX$, including high gluon density effects, using the all twist formalism of McLerran and Venugopalan and show that it can be related to the dipole nucleon cross section measured in DIS experiments. For neutrino energies of $E_ν\sim 10^{12}$ GeV, the geometric scaling region extends all the way up to $Q^2 \sim M^2_{W}$. We show that geometric scaling can lead to an {\it enhancement} of the neutrino nucleon total cross section by 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to the leading twist cross section and discuss the implications for neutrino observatories. At extremely high energies, gluon saturation effects suppress the neutrino nucleon total cross section and lead to its unitarization.

Electromagnetic Signatures of the Color Glass Condensate: Dileptons

We evaluate the invariant cross section for production of dileptons in forward rapidities at RHIC and LHC, using the Color Glass Condensate formalism and present results for the nuclear modification factor $R_{d(p)A}$ as a function of dilepton invariant mass for the most central deuteron (proton)-nucleus collisions.

The Color Glass Condensate at RHIC

The Color Glass Condensate formalism and its application to high energy heavy ion collisions at RHIC are discussed. We argue that the RHIC data supports the view that the Color Glass Condensate provides the initial conditions for gold-gold collisions at RHIC while final state (Quark Gluon Plasma) effects are responsible for the high $p_t$ suppression in mid rapidity. At forward rapidities in deuteron-gold collisions, however, Color Glass Condensate is the underlying physics of the observed suppression of the particle spectra and their centrality dependence.

The Cronin Effect, Quantum Evolution and the Color Glass Condensate

We show that the numerical solution of the classical SU(3) Yang-Mills equations of motion in the McLerran-Venugopalan model for gluon production in central heavy ion collisions leads to a suppresion at low $p_t$ and an enhancement at the intermediate $p_t$ region as compared to peripheral heavy ion and pp collisions at the same energy. Our results are compared to previous, Color Glass Condensate inspired calculations of gluon production in heavy ion collisions. We revisit the predictions of the Color Glass Condensate model for $pA$ ($dA$) collisions in Leading Order and show that quantum evolution--in particular the phenomenon of geometric scaling and change of anomalous dimensions--preserves the Cronin enhancement of $pA$ cross section (when normalized to the leading twist term) in the Leading Order approximation even though the $p_t$ spectrum can change. We comment on the case when gluon radiation is included.

Limiting fragmentation from the Color Glass Condensate

We show how the limiting fragmentation phenomenon can arise from the Color Glass Condensate model of high energy QCD. We consider the very forward rapidity region in relativistic heavy ion collisions and argue that in this region, nucleus-nucleus collisions are similar to proton-nucleus collisions (up to shadowing corrections). We then use the known results for proton-nucleus cross sections to show that it leads to the phenomenon of limiting fragmentation in the very forward region of heavy ion collisions as observed at RHIC.

Scattering of Gluons from the Color Glass Condensate

We prove that the inclusive single-gluon production cross section for a hadron colliding with a high-density target factorizes into the gluon distribution function of the projectile, defined as usual within the DGLAP collinear approximation, times the cross section for scattering of a single gluon on the strong classical color field of the target. We then derive the gluon-proton (nucleus) inelastic cross section and show that it is (up to logarithms) infrared safe and that it grows slowly with center of mass energy. Furthermore, we discuss jet transverse momentum broadening for the case of nuclear targets. We show that in the saturation regime, in contrast to the perturbative regime, the width of the transverse momentum distribution is infrared finite and grows rapidly with energy and rapidity. In both regimes, however, transverse momentum broadening exibits the same dependence on atomic number A.

Dilepton production from the Color Glass Condensate

We consider dilepton production in high energy proton-nucleus (and very forward nucleus-nucleus) collisions. Treating the target nucleus as a Color Glass Condensate and describing the projectile proton (nucleus) as a collection of quarks and gluons as in the parton model, we calculate the differential cross section for dilepton production in quark-nucleus scattering and show that it is very sensitive to the saturation scale characterizing the target nucleus.
