W/Z Bremsstrahlung as the Dominant Annihilation Channel for Dark Matter

Dark matter annihilation to leptons, $χχ\rightarrow l \bar{l}$, is necessarily accompanied by electroweak radiative corrections, in which a W or Z boson is radiated from a final state particle. Given that the W and Z gauge bosons decay dominantly via hadronic channels, it is thus impossible to produce final state leptons without accompanying protons, antiprotons, and gamma rays. Significantly, while many dark matter models feature a helicity suppressed annihilation rate to fermions, radiating a massive gauge boson from a final state fermion removes this helicity suppression, such that the branching ratios Br(l νW), Br(l^+l^- Z), and Br(ν\nubar Z) dominate over Br(l\bar{l}). W/Z-bremsstrahlung thus allows indirect detection of many WIMP models that would otherwise be helicity-suppressed, or v^2 suppressed. Antiprotons and even anti-deuterons become consequential final state particles. This is an important result for future DM searches. We discuss the implications of W/Z-bremsstrahlung for "leptonic" DM models which aim to fit recent cosmic ray positron and antiproton data.

Magnetic Helicity in Sphaleron Debris

We develop an analytical technique to evaluate the magnetic helicity in the debris from sphaleron decay. We show that baryon number production leads to left-handed magnetic fields, and that the magnetic helicity is conserved at late times. Our analysis explicitly demonstrates the connection between sphaleron-mediated cosmic baryogenesis and cosmic magnetogenesis.

Warm DBI Inflation

We propose a warm inflationary model in the context of relativistic D-brane inflation in a warped throat, which has Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) kinetic term and is coupled to radiation through a dissipation term. The perturbation freezes at the sound horizon and the power spectrum is determined by a combination of the dissipative parameter and the sound speed parameter. The thermal dissipation ameliorates the {\it eta} problem and softens theoretical constraints from the extra-dimensional volume and from observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The warm DBI model can lead to appreciable non-Gaussianity of the equilateral type. As a phenomenological model, ignoring compactification constraints, we show that large-field warm inflation models do not necessarily yield a large tensor-to-scalar ratio.

A new approach to the vacuum of inflationary models

A new approach is given for the implementation of boundary conditions used in solving the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation in the context of inflation. The familiar quantization procedure is reviewed, along with a discussion of where one might expect deviations from the standard approach to arise. The proposed method introduces a (model dependent) fitting function for the z"/z and a"/a terms in the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation for scalar and tensor modes, as well as imposes the boundary conditions at a finite conformal time. As an example, we employ a fitting function, and compute the spectral index, along with its running, for a specific inflationary model which possesses background equations that are analytically solvable. The observational upper bound on the tensor to scalar ratio is used to constrain the parameters of the boundary conditions in the tensor sector as well. An overview on the generalization of this method is also discussed.

f(T) gravity mimicking dynamical dark energy. Background and perturbation analysis

We investigate f(T) cosmology in both the background, as well as in the perturbation level, and we present the general formalism for reconstructing the equivalent one-parameter family of f(T) models for any given dynamical dark energy scenario. Despite the completely indistinguishable background behavior, the perturbations break this degeneracy and the growth histories of all these models differ from one another. As an application we reconstruct the f(T) equivalent for quintessence, and we show that the deviation of the matter overdensity evolution is strong for small scales and weak for large scales, while it is negligible for large redshifts.

Cosmological perturbations in f(T) gravity

We investigate the cosmological perturbations in f(T) gravity. Examining the pure gravitational perturbations in the scalar sector using a diagonal vierbien, we extract the corresponding dispersion relation, which provides a constraint on the f(T) ansatzes that lead to a theory free of instabilities. Additionally, upon inclusion of the matter perturbations, we derive the fully perturbed equations of motion, and we study the growth of matter overdensities. We show that f(T) gravity with f(T) constant coincides with General Relativity, both at the background as well as at the first-order perturbation level. Applying our formalism to the power-law model we find that on large subhorizon scales (O(100 Mpc) or larger), the evolution of matter overdensity will differ from LCDM cosmology. Finally, examining the linear perturbations of the vector and tensor sectors, we find that (for the standard choice of vierbein) f(T) gravity is free of massive gravitons.

Parametrization for the Scale Dependent Growth in Modified Gravity

We propose a scale dependent analytic approximation to the exact linear growth of density perturbations in Scalar-Tensor (ST) cosmologies. In particular, we show that on large subhorizon scales, in the Newtonian gauge, the usual scale independent subhorizon growth equation does not describe the growth of perturbations accurately, as a result of scale-dependent relativistic corrections to the Poisson equation. A comparison with exact linear numerical analysis indicates that our approximation is a significant improvement over the standard subhorizon scale independent result on large subhorizon scales. A comparison with the corresponding results in the Synchronous gauge demonstrates the validity and consistency of our analysis.

Thermal Relic Abundances of Particles with Velocity-Dependent Interactions

We reexamine the evolution of thermal relic particle abundances for the case where the interaction rate depends on the particle velocities. For the case of Sommerfeld enhancement, we show that the standard analytic approximation, modified in a straightforward way, provides an estimate of the relic particle abundance that is accurate to within 10% (in comparison to less than 1% error for the non-Sommerfeld-enhanced case). We examine the effect of kinetic decoupling on relic particle abundances when the interaction rate depends on the velocity. For the case of pure p-wave annihilation, the effect of kinetic decoupling is an increase in the relic abundance, but the effect is negligible when the kinetic decoupling temperature is much less than the chemical decoupling temperature. For the case of Sommerfeld-enhanced s-wave annihilations, after kinetic decoupling occurs, annihilations continue to change the particle abundance down to arbitrarily low temperatures, until either matter domination begins or the Sommerfeld effect cuts off. We derive analytic approximations to give the final relic particle abundances for both of these cases.

New Parametrization for the Scale Dependent Growth Function in General Relativity

We demonstrate the scale dependence of the growth function of cosmological perturbations in dark energy models based on General Relativity. This scale dependence is more prominent on cosmological scales of $100h^{-1}Mpc$ or larger. We derive a new scale dependent parametrization which generalizes the well known Newtonian approximation result $f_0(a)\equiv \frac{d\ln δ_0}{d\ln a}=\om(a)^γ$ ($γ={6/11}$ for \lcdm) which is a good approximation on scales less than $50h^{-1}Mpc$. Our generalized parametrization is of the form $f(a)=\frac{f_0(a)}{1+ξ(a,k)}$ where $ξ(a,k)=\frac{3 H_{0}^{2} \omm}{a k^2}$. We demonstrate that this parametrization fits the exact result of a full general relativistic evaluation of the growth function up to horizon scales for both \lcdm and dynamical dark energy. In contrast, the scale independent parametrization does not provide a good fit on scales beyond 5% of the horizon scale ($k\simeq 0.01 h^{-1}Mpc$).

Towards Realizing Warm Inflation in String Theory

We give a generic argument that string theory provides a natural setting for warm inflationary cosmology. We then explore a specific model with an inflaton modulus field coupled to fields that provide the continuous dissipation needed for warm inflation and argue the results are generic for a large class of models.

On the dangers of using the growth equation on large scales in the Newtonian gauge

We examine the accuracy of the growth equation $\ddotδ + 2H\dotδ - 4πGρδ= 0$, which is ubiquitous in the cosmological literature, in the context of the Newtonian gauge. By comparing the growth predicted by this equation to a numerical solution of the linearized Einstein equations in the $Λ$CDM scenario, we show that while this equation is a reliable approximation on small scales ($k\gtrsim $h Mpc$^{-1}$), it can be disastrously inaccurate ($\sim 10^4% $) on larger scales in this gauge. We propose a modified version of the growth equation for the Newtonian gauge, which while preserving the simplicity of the original equation, provides considerably more accurate results. We examine the implications of the failure of the growth equation on a few recent studies, aimed at discriminating general relativity from modified gravity, which use this equation as a starting point. We show that while the results of these studies are valid on small scales, they are not reliable on large scales or high redshifts, if one works in the Newtonian gauge. Finally, we discuss the growth equation in the synchronous gauge and show that the corrections to the Poisson equation are exactly equivalent to the difference between the overdensities in the synchronous and Newtonian gauges.

Electroweak Bremsstrahlung in Dark Matter Annihilation

A conservative upper bound on the total dark matter (DM) annihilation rate can be obtained by constraining the appearance rate of the annihilation products which are hardest to detect. The production of neutrinos, via the process $χχ\to \barνν$, has thus been used to set a strong general bound on the dark matter annihilation rate. However, Standard Model radiative corrections to this process will inevitably produce photons which may be easier to detect. We present an explicit calculation of the branching ratios for the electroweak bremsstrahlung processes $χχ\to \barννZ$ and $χχ\to \barνe W$. These modes inevitably lead to electromagnetic showers and further constraints on the DM annihilation cross-section. In addition to annihilation, our calculations are also applicable to the case of dark matter decay.

A new perspective on the relation between dark energy perturbations and the late-time ISW effect

The effect of quintessence perturbations on the ISW effect is studied for a mixed dynamical scalar field dark energy (DDE) and pressureless perfect fluid dark matter. A new and general methodology is developed to track the growth of the perturbations, which uses only the equation of state (EoS) parameter $w_{\rm DDE} (z) \equiv p_{\rm DDE}/ρ_{\rm DDE}$ of the scalar field DDE, and the initial values of the the relative entropy perturbation (between the matter and DDE) and the intrinsic entropy perturbation of the scalar field DDE as inputs. We also derive a relation between the rest frame sound speed $\hat{c}_{s,{\rm DDE}}^2$ of an arbitrary DDE component and its EoS $w_{\rm DDE} (z)$. We show that the ISW signal differs from that expected in a $Λ$CDM cosmology by as much as +20% to -80% for parameterizations of $w_{\rm DDE}$ consistent with SNIa data, and about $\pm$ 20% for parameterizations of $w_{\rm DDE}$ consistent with SNIa+CMB+BAO data, at 95% confidence. Our results indicate that, at least in principle, the ISW effect can be used to phenomenologically distinguish a cosmological constant from DDE.

Toward a Minimum Branching Fraction for Dark Matter Annihilation into Electromagnetic Final States

Observational limits on the high-energy neutrino background have been used to place general constraints on dark matter that annihilates only into standard model particles. Dark matter particles that annihilate into neutrinos will also inevitably branch into electromagnetic final states through higher-order tree and loop diagrams that give rise to charged leptons, and these charged particles can transfer their energy into photons via synchrotron radiation or inverse Compton scattering. In the context of effective field theory, we calculate the loop-induced branching ratio to charged leptons and show that it is generally quite large, typically >1%, when the scale of the dark matter mass exceeds the electroweak scale, M_W. For a branching fraction >3%, the synchrotron radiation bounds on dark matter annihilation are currently stronger than the corresponding neutrino bounds in the interesting mass range from 100 GeV to 1 TeV. For dark matter masses below M_W, our work provides a plausible framework for the construction of a model for "neutrinos only" dark matter annihilations.

Modified Pati-Salam Model from $Z_7$ orbifolded AdS/CFT

We consider models built on $AdS_5\otimes S^5/Γ$ orbifold compactifications of the type $IIB$ superstring, where $Γ$ is the abelian group $Z_n$. An attractive three family $\mathcal{N}=0$ SUSY model is found for $n=7$ that is a modified Pati--Salam Model which reduced to the Standard Model after symmetry breaking.

Proton Decay Constraints on Low Scale AdS/CFT Unification

Dark matter candidates and proton decay in a class of models based on the AdS/CFT correspondence are discussed. We show that the present bound on the proton decay lifetime is inconsistent with ${\cal N} = 1$ SUSY, and strongly constrains ${\cal N} = 0$ non-SUSY, low scale trinification type unification of orbifolded AdS$\otimes S^5$ models.
