Facets of module theory over semirings

We set up some basic module theory over semirings, with particular attention to what is needed in scheme theory over semirings. We show that while not all the usual definitions of vector bundle agree over semirings, all the usual definitions of line bundle do agree. We also show that the narrow class group of a number field can be recovered as a reflexive Picard group of its subsemiring of totally nonnegative algebraic integers.

Canonical lifts and $δ$-structures

We extend the Serre-Tate theory of canonical lifts of ordinary abelian varieties to arbitrary unpolarised families of ordinary abelian varieties parameterised by a $p$-adic formal scheme $S$. We show that the canonical lift is the unique lift to $W(S)$ which admits a $δ$-structure in the sense of Joyal, Buium, and Bousfield. We prove analogous statements for families of ordinary $p$-groups and $p$-divisible groups.

Isocrystals associated to arithmetic jet spaces of abelian schemes

Using Buium's theory of arithmetic differential characters, we construct a filtered $F$-isocrystal ${\bf H}(A)_K$ associated to an abelian scheme $A$ over a $p$-adically complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field. As a filtered vector space, ${\bf H}(A)_K$ admits a natural map to the usual de Rham cohomology of $A$, but the Frobenius operator comes from arithmetic differential theory and is not the same as the usual crystalline one. When $A$ is an elliptic curve, we show that ${\bf H}(A)_K$ has a natural integral model ${\bf H}(A)$, which implies an integral refinement of a result of Buium's on arithmetic differential characters. The weak admissibility of ${\bf H}(A)_K$ depends on the invertibility of an arithmetic-differential modular parameter. Thus the Fontaine functor associates to suitably generic $A$ a local Galois representation of an apparently new kind.

Differential Characters of Drinfeld Modules and de Rham Cohomology

We introduce differential characters of Drinfeld modules. These are function-field analogues of Buium's p-adic differential characters of elliptic curves and of Manin's differential characters of elliptic curves in differential algebra, both of which have had notable Diophantine applications. We determine the structure of the group of differential characters. This shows the existence of a family of interesting differential modular functions on the moduli of Drinfeld modules. It also leads to a canonical $F$-crystal equipped with a map to the de Rham cohomology of the Drinfeld module. This $F$-crystal is of a differential-algebraic nature, and the relation to the classical cohomological realizations is presently not clear.

Explicit class field theory and the algebraic geometry of $Λ$-rings

We consider generalized $Λ$-structures on algebras and schemes over the ring of integers $\mathit{O}_K$ of a number field $K$. When $K=\mathbb{Q}$, these agree with the $λ$-ring structures of algebraic K-theory. We then study reduced finite flat $Λ$-rings over $\mathit{O}_K$ and show that the maximal ones are classified in a Galois theoretic manner by the ray class monoid of Deligne and Ribet. Second, we show that the periodic loci on any $Λ$-scheme of finite type over $\mathit{O}_K$ generate a canonical family of abelian extensions of $K$. This raises the possibility that $Λ$-schemes could provide a framework for explicit class field theory, and we show that the classical explicit class field theories for the rational numbers and imaginary quadratic fields can be set naturally in this framework. This approach has the further merit of allowing for some precise questions in the spirit of Hilbert's 12th Problem. In an interlude which might be of independent interest, we define rings of periodic big Witt vectors and relate them to the global class field theoretical mathematics of the rest of the paper.

On Frobenius and Fibers of Arithmetic Jet Spaces

In this article, given a scheme $X$ we show the existence of canonical lifts of Frobenius maps in an inverse system of schemes obtained from the fiber product of the canonical prolongation sequence of arithmetic jet spaces $J^*X$ and a prolongation sequence $S^*$ over the scheme $X$. As a consequence, for any smooth group scheme $E$, if $N^n$ denote the kernel of the canonical projection map of the $n$-th jet space $J^nE \rightarrow E$, then the inverse system $\{N^n\}_n$ is a prolongation sequence.

Canonical lifts of families of elliptic curves

We show that the canonical-lift construction for ordinary elliptic curves over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$ extends uniquely to arbitrary families of ordinary elliptic curves, even over $p$-adic formal schemes. In particular, the universal ordinary elliptic curve has a canonical lift. The existence statement is largely a formal consequence of the universal property of Witt vectors applied to the moduli space of ordinary elliptic curves, at least with enough level structure. As an application, we show how this point of view allows for more formal proofs of recent results of Finotti and Erdoğan.

The basic geometry of Witt vectors, I: The affine case

We give a concrete description of the category of etale algebras over the ring of Witt vectors of a given finite length with entries in an arbitrary ring. We do this not only for the classical p-typical and big Witt vector functors but also for variants of these functors which are in a certain sense their analogues over arbitrary local and global fields. The basic theory of these generalized Witt vectors is developed from the point of view of commuting Frobenius lifts and their universal properties, which is a new approach even for the classical Witt vectors. The larger purpose of this paper is to provide the affine foundations for the algebraic geometry of generalized Witt schemes and arithmetic jet spaces. So the basics here are developed somewhat fully, with an eye toward future applications.

The basic geometry of Witt vectors, II: Spaces

This is an account of the algebraic geometry of Witt vectors and arithmetic jet spaces. The usual, "p-typical" Witt vectors of p-adic schemes of finite type are already reasonably well understood. The main point here is to generalize this theory in two ways. We allow not just p-typical Witt vectors but those taken with respect to any set of primes in any ring of integers in any global field, for example. This includes the "big" Witt vectors. We also allow not just p-adic schemes of finite type but arbitrary algebraic spaces over the ring of integers in the global field. We give similar generalizations of Buium's formal arithmetic jet functor, which is dual to the Witt functor. We also give concrete geometric descriptions of Witt spaces and arithmetic jet spaces and investigate whether a number of standard geometric properties are preserved by these functors.

Boolean Witt vectors and an integral Edrei-Thoma theorem

A subtraction-free definition of the big Witt vector construction was recently given by the first author. This allows one to define the big Witt vectors of any semiring. Here we give an explicit combinatorial description of the big Witt vectors of the Boolean semiring. We do the same for two variants of the big Witt vector construction: the Schur Witt vectors and the $p$-typical Witt vectors. We use this to give an explicit description of the Schur Witt vectors of the natural numbers, which can be viewed as the classification of totally positive power series with integral coefficients, first obtained by Davydov. We also determine the cardinalities of some Witt vector algebras with entries in various concrete arithmetic semirings.

Lambda actions of rings of integers

Let O be the ring of integers of a number field K. For an O-algebra R which is torsion free as an O-module we define what we mean by a Lambda_O-ring structure on R. We can determine whether a finite etale K-algebra E with Lambda_O-ring structure has an integral model in terms of a Deligne-Ribet monoid of K. This a commutative monoid whose invertible elements form a ray class group.

Differential forms on arithmetic jet spaces

We study derivations and differential forms on the arithmetic jet spaces of smooth schemes, relative to several primes. As applications we give a new interpretation of arithmetic Laplacians and we discuss the de Rham cohomology of some specific arithmetic jet spaces.

Lambda-rings and the field with one element

The theory of Lambda-rings, in the sense of Grothendieck's Riemann-Roch theory, is an enrichment of the theory of commutative rings. In the same way, we can enrich usual algebraic geometry over the ring Z of integers to produce Lambda-algebraic geometry. We show that Lambda-algebraic geometry is in a precise sense an algebraic geometry over a deeper base than Z and that it has many properties predicted for algebraic geometry over the mythical field with one element. Moreover, it does this is a way that is both formally robust and closely related to active areas in arithmetic algebraic geometry.

Galois theory and integral models of Lambda-rings

We show that any Lambda-ring, in the sense of Riemann-Roch theory, which is finite etale over the rational numbers and has an integral model as a Lambda-ring is contained in a product of cyclotomic fields. In fact, we show that the category of them is described in a Galois-theoretic way in terms of the monoid of pro-finite integers under multiplication and the cyclotomic character. We also study the maximality of these integral models and give a more precise, integral version of the result above. These results reveal an interesting relation between Lambda-rings and class field theory.

Plethystic algebra

The notion of a Z-algebra has a non-linear analogue, whose purpose it is to control operations on commutative rings rather than linear operations on abelian groups. These plethories can also be considered non-linear generalizations of cocommutative bialgebras. We establish a number of category-theoretic facts about plethories and their actions, including a Tannaka-Krein-style reconstruction theorem. We show that the classical ring of Witt vectors, with all its concomitant structure, can be understood in a formula-free way in terms of a plethystic version of an affine blow-up applied to the plethory generated by the Frobenius map. We also discuss the linear and infinitesimal structure of plethories and explain how this gives Bloch's Frobenius operator on the de Rham-Witt complex.
