Composite bosonic baryon dark matter on the lattice: SU(4) baryon spectrum and the effective Higgs interaction

We present the spectrum of baryons in a new SU(4) gauge theory with fundamental fermion constituents. The spectrum of these bosonic baryons is of significant interest for composite dark matter theories. Here, we compare the spectrum and properties of SU(3) and SU(4) baryons, and then compute the dark-matter direct detection cross section via Higgs boson exchange for TeV-scale composite dark matter arising from a confining SU(4) gauge sector. Comparison with the latest LUX results leads to tight bounds on the fraction of the constituent-fermion mass that may arise from electroweak symmetry breaking. Lattice calculations of the dark matter mass spectrum and the Higgs-dark matter coupling are performed on quenched $16^{3} \times 32$, $32^{3} \times 64$, $48^{3} \times 96$, and $64^{3} \times128$ lattices with three different lattice spacings, using Wilson fermions with moderate to heavy pseudoscalar meson masses. Our results lay a foundation for future analytic and numerical study of composite baryonic dark matter.

Approaching Conformality with Ten Flavors

We present first results for lattice simulations, on a single volume, of the low-lying spectrum of an SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory with ten light fermions in the fundamental representation. Fits to the fermion mass dependence of various observables are found to be globally consistent with the hypothesis that this theory is within or just outside the strongly-coupled edge of the conformal window, with mass anomalous dimension consistent with 1 over the range of scales simulated. We stress that we cannot rule out the possibility of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking at scales well below our infrared cutoff. We discuss important systematic effects, including finite-volume corrections, and consider directions for future improvement.

Exploring strange nucleon form factors on the lattice

We discuss techniques for evaluating sea quark contributions to hadronic form factors on the lattice and apply these to an exploratory calculation of the strange electromagnetic, axial, and scalar form factors of the nucleon. We employ the Wilson gauge and fermion actions on an anisotropic 24^3 x 64 lattice, probing a range of momentum transfer with Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The strange electric and magnetic form factors, G_E^s(Q^2) and G_M^s(Q^2), are found to be small and consistent with zero within the statistics of our calculation. The lattice data favor a small negative value for the strange axial form factor G_A^s(Q^2) and exhibit a strong signal for the bare strange scalar matrix element _0. We discuss the unique systematic uncertainties affecting the latter quantity relative to the continuum, as well as prospects for improving future determinations with Wilson-like fermions.

Chiral random matrix theory for staggered fermions

We present a completed random matrix theory for staggered fermions which incorporates all taste symmetry breaking terms at their leading order from the staggered chiral Lagrangian. This is an extension of previous work which only included some of the taste breaking terms. We will also discuss the effects of taste symmetry breaking on the eigenvalues in the weak and strong taste breaking limits, and compare with some results from lattice simulations.

WW Scattering Parameters via Pseudoscalar Phase Shifts

Using domain-wall lattice simulations, we study pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar scattering in the maximal isospin channel for an SU(3) gauge theory with two and six fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. This calculation of the S-wave scattering length is related to the next-to-leading order corrections to WW scattering through the low-energy coefficients of the chiral Lagrangian. While two and six flavor scattering lengths are similar for a fixed ratio of the pseudoscalar mass to its decay constant, six-flavor scattering shows a somewhat less repulsive next-to-leading order interaction than its two-flavor counterpart. Estimates are made for the WW scattering parameters and the plausibility of detection is discussed.

Staggered chiral random matrix theory

We present a random matrix theory (RMT) for the staggered lattice QCD Dirac operator. The staggered RMT is equivalent to the zero-momentum limit of the staggered chiral Lagrangian and includes all taste breaking terms at their leading order. This is an extension of previous work which only included some of the taste breaking terms. We will also present some results for the taste breaking contributions to the partition function and the Dirac eigenvalues.

Parity Doubling and the S Parameter Below the Conformal Window

We describe a lattice simulation of the masses and decay constants of the lowest-lying vector and axial resonances, and the electroweak S parameter, in an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 2$ and 6 fermions in the fundamental representation. The spectrum becomes more parity doubled and the S parameter per electroweak doublet decreases when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6, motivating study of these trends as $N_f$ is increased further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

Lattice study of ChPT beyond QCD

We describe initial results by the Lattice Strong Dynamics (LSD) collaboration of a study into the variation of chiral properties of chiral properties of SU(3) Yang-Mills gauge theory as the number of massless flavors changes from $N_f = 2$ to $N_f = 6$, with a focus on the use of chiral perturbation theory.

Toward TeV Conformality

We study the chiral condensate $<\barψ ψ>$ for an SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation when $N_f$ is increased from 2 to 6. For $N_f=2$, our lattice simulations of $<\barψ ψ>/F^3$, where $F$ is the Nambu-Goldstone-boson decay constant, agree with the measured QCD value. For $N_f = 6$, this ratio shows significant enhancement, presaging an even larger enhancement anticipated as $N_f$ increases further, toward the critical value for transition from confinement to infrared conformality.

The role of multigrid algorithms for LQCD

We report on the first successful QCD multigrid algorithm which demonstrates constant convergence rates independent of quark mass and lattice volume for the Wilson Dirac operator. The new ingredient is the adaptive method for constructing the near null space on which the coarse grid multigrid Dirac operator acts. In addition we speculate on future prospects for extending this algorithm to the Domain Wall and Staggered discretizations, its exceptional suitability for high performance GPU code and its potential impact on simulations at the physical pion mass.

I will present a method for providing initial guesses to a linear solver for systems with multiple shifts. This can also be extended to the case of multiple sources each with a different shift.

Is the chiral phase transition induced by a metal-insulator transition?

We investigate the QCD Dirac operator with gauge configurations given by a liquid of instantons in the region of temperatures about the chiral phase transition. Both the quenched and unquenched cases are examined in detail. We present evidence of a localization transition in the low lying modes of the Dirac operator around the same temperature as the chiral phase transition. Thus both level statistics and eigenvectors of the QCD Dirac operator at the chiral phase transition have similar properties than those of a disordered conductor at the metal-insulator transition. This strongly suggests the phenomenon of Anderson localization (localization by destructive quantum interference) is the leading physical mechanism in the restoration of the chiral symmetry. Finally we argue that our findings are not in principle restricted to the ILM approximation and may also be found in lattice simulations.

Chiral phase transition in lattice QCD as a metal-insulator transition

We investigate the lattice QCD Dirac operator with staggered fermions at temperatures around the chiral phase transition. We present evidence of a metal-insulator transition in the low lying modes of the Dirac operator around the same temperature as the chiral phase transition. This strongly suggests the phenomenon of Anderson localization drives the QCD vacuum to the chirally symmetric phase in a way similar to a metal-insulator transition in a disordered conductor. We also discuss how Anderson localization affects the usual phenomenological treatment of phase transitions a la Ginzburg-Landau.

Partially quenched QCD with a chemical potential

Using a chiral random matrix theory we can now derive the low energy partition functions and Dirac eigenvalue correlations of QCD with different chemical potentials for the dynamical and valence quarks. The results can also be extended to complex (and purely imaginary) chemical potential. We also discuss possible applications such as fitting to low energy constants and understanding the phase diagrams of the full and partially quenched theories.

Chiral phase transition and Anderson localization in the Instanton Liquid Model for QCD

We study the spectrum and eigenmodes of the QCD Dirac operator in a gauge background given by an Instanton Liquid Model (ILM) at temperatures around the chiral phase transition. Generically we find the Dirac eigenvectors become more localized as the temperature is increased. At the chiral phase transition, both the low lying eigenmodes and the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator undergo a transition to localization similar to the one observed in a disordered conductor. This suggests that Anderson localization is the fundamental mechanism driving the chiral phase transition. We also find an additional temperature dependent mobility edge (separating delocalized from localized eigenstates) in the bulk of the spectrum which moves toward lower eigenvalues as the temperature is increased. In both regions, the origin and the bulk, the transition to localization exhibits features of a 3D Anderson transition including multifractal eigenstates and spectral properties that are well described by critical statistics. Similar results are obtained in both the quenched and the unquenched case though the critical temperature in the unquenched case is lower. Finally we argue that our findings are not in principle restricted to the ILM approximation and may also be found in lattice simulations.

Dirac eigenvalue correlations in quenched QCD at finite density

We compare eigenvalue correlations of the Dirac operator with a chemical potential obtained from lattice simulations of quenched QCD with analytic predictions obtained from chiral effective theories in the zero-momentum limit. By comparing the density and two-point correlation function we show that the analytic results agree with QCD at low energies. We also examine the scale (Thouless energy) up to which the zero-momentum approximation is valid.

Chiral phase transition as an Anderson transition in the Instanton Liquid Model for QCD

We study the spectrum and eigenmodes of the QCD Dirac operator in a gauge background given by an Instanton Liquid Model (ILM) at temperatures around the chiral phase transition. For two massless quark flavors we observe that at the chiral phase transition, both the low lying eigenmodes and the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator resemble those of a disordered conductor at the Anderson transition. In particular we present results showing that the eigenvectors are multifractal and the spectral correlations are well described by critical statistics. We also find an additional temperature dependent mobility edge located in the bulk of the spectrum with properties quantitatively similar to those of a 3D disordered conductor at the Anderson transition. This feature is present in both quenched and unquenched simulations. Finally we argue that our findings are not in principle restricted to the ILM approximation and may also be found in lattice simulations.

Eigenvalue correlations in QCD with a chemical potential

We discuss a new Random Matrix Model for QCD with a chemical potential that is based on the symmetries of the Dirac operator and can be solved exactly for all eigenvalue correlations for any number of flavors. In the microscopic limit of small energy levels the results should be an accurate description of QCD. This new model can also be scaled so that all physical observables remain at their $μ=0$ values until a first order chiral restoration transition is reached. This gives a more realistic model for the QCD phase diagram than previous RMM. We also mention how the model might aid in determining the phase diagram of QCD from future numerical simulations.
