Project X: Physics Opportunities

Part 2 of "Project X: Accelerator Reference Design, Physics Opportunities, Broader Impacts". In this Part, we outline the particle-physics program that can be achieved with Project X, a staged superconducting linac for intensity-frontier particle physics. Topics include neutrino physics, kaon physics, muon physics, electric dipole moments, neutron-antineutron oscillations, new light particles, hadron structure, hadron spectroscopy, and lattice-QCD calculations. Part 1 is available as arXiv:1306.5022 [physics.acc-ph] and Part 3 is available as arXiv:1306.5024 [physics.acc-ph].

Search for Correlated High Energy Cosmic Ray Events with CHICOS

We present the results of a search for time correlations in high energy cosmic ray data (primary E > 10^{14} eV) collected by the California HIgh school Cosmic ray ObServatory (CHICOS) array. Data from 60 detector sites spread over an area of 400 km^2 were studied for evidence of correlated events separated by more than 1 km with coincidence times ranging from 1 microsec up to 1 second. All searches were consistent with the absence of excess coincidences except for a 2.9 sigma excess observed for coincidence times less than 10 microsec. We report upper limits for the coincidence probability as a function of coincidence time.

Results from the K2K Long--Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment

The K2K Long--Baseline neutrino oscillation experiment has been aquiring data since mid-1999 and has analysed those up to March of 2001. Forty-four fully contained events are observedin the fiducial volume of the far detector where $64^{+6.1}_{-6.6}$ are expected based partly on measurements near the beam production point. There is virtually no background for the contained event search. The methods established in this experiment are crucial for operation of future similar experiments to probe the nature of mixing in the neutral lepton sector, a necessary step in understanding the nature of family structure and of mass itself. A brief history and a few notes about the future and direction of the field precede the description of the experiment and its results.

Results from the LSND Neutrino Oscillation Search

The Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility sets bounds on neutrino oscillations in the appearance channel nu_mu_bar --> nu_e_bar by searching for the signature of the reaction nu_e_bar p --> e^+ n: an e$^+$ followed by a 2.2MeV gamma ray from neutron capture. Five e^{+/-} -- gamma coincidences are observed in time with the LAMPF beam, with an estimated background of 6.2 events. The 90\% confidence limits obtained are: Delta (m^2) < 0.07eV^2 for sin^2 (2theta) = 1, and sin^2(2theta) < 6 10^{-3} for Delta (m^2) > 20 eV^2.
