Special classes of functions

Using model theory and differential algebra, we give necessary conditions for algebraic ordinary differential equations to have a complex Pfaffian solution on some complex domain. These tools also allow us to give many examples of algebraic ordinary differential equations that do not have real Pfaffian solution on any open interval. We also give a sufficient condition for a function to be d-irreducible, in the sense of Nishioka. These characterizations are used to give several answers to questions of Bianconi (2016) and strengthen a theorem of Nguyen (2009).

On the number of independent solutions of algebraic differential equations

We prove a conjecture of Kumbhakar, Roy, and Srinivasan (2024) on the classification of order one differential equations, and a conjecture of Kumbhakar and Srinivasan (2025) on higher order equations. Both conjectures involve bounds for the number of independent solutions of the equation and are shown to be results of recent work in differential Galois theory using model theoretic techniques. In both cases, stronger versions of the conjectures hold when working over the field of constants (i.e., when the equation is autonomous). We then use inverse Galois theory to show that the bounds in the conjectures are optimal when working over a differential field which is differentially finitely generated over its constant subfield. We also show how recent results of Jaoui and Moosa (2024) on abelian reductions of differential equations can be used to recover some of the work of Kumbhakar and Srinivasan (2025).

When any four solutions are independent

We show that if any four distinct solutions of a rational difference equation are algebraically independent, then any number of distinct solutions to the equation are independent. A nontrivial variant of this result is given for autonomous difference equations or algebraic dynamical systems, where we show the degree of nonminimality is at most one. The results have a natural interpretation in terms of invariant or periodic subvarieties of algebraic dynamical systems and $\sigma$-varieties. Surprisingly, the proofs of these results rely on the classification of finite simple groups.

Simple Homogeneous Structures and Indiscernible Sequence Invariants

We introduce some properties describing dependence in indiscernible sequences: $F_{ind}$ and its dual $F_{Mb}$, the definable Morley property, and $n$-resolvability. Applying these properties, we establish the following results: We show that the degree of nonminimality introduced by Freitag and Moosa, which is closely related to $F_{ind}$ (equal in $\mathrm{DCF}_{0}$), may take on any positive integer value in an $\omega$-stable theory, answering a question of Freitag, Jaoui, and Moosa. Proving a conjecture of Koponen, we show that every simple theory with quantifier elimination in a finite relational language has finite rank and is one-based. The arguments closely rely on finding types $q$ with $F_{Mb}(q) = \infty$, and on $n$-resolvability. We prove some variants of the simple Kim-forking conjecture, a generalization of the stable forking conjecture to $\mathrm{NSOP}_{1}$ theories. We show a global analogue of the simple Kim-forking conjecture with infinitely many variables holds in every $\mathrm{NSOP}_{1}$ theory, and show that Kim-forking with a realization of a type $p$ with $\mathrm{F}_{Mb}(p) < \infty$ satisfies a finite-variable version of this result. We then show, in a low $\mathrm{NSOP}_{1}$ theory or when $p$ is isolated, if $p \in S(C)$ has the definable Morley property for Kim-independence, Kim-forking with realizations of $p$ gives a nontrivial instance of the simple Kim-forking conjecture itself. In particular, when $F_{Mb}(p) < \infty$ and $|S^{F_{Mb}(p) + 1}(C)| < \infty$, Kim-forking with realizations of $p$ gives us a nontrivial instance of the simple Kim-forking conjecture. We show that the quantity $F_{Mb}$, motivated in simple and $\mathrm{NSOP}_{1}$ theories by the above results, is in fact nontrivial even in stable theories.

Applications of Littlestone dimension to query learning and to compression

In this paper we give several applications of Littlestone dimension. The first is to the model of \cite{angluin2017power}, where we extend their results for learning by equivalence queries with random counterexamples. Second, we extend that model to infinite concept classes with an additional source of randomness. Third, we give improved results on the relationship of Littlestone dimension to classes with extended $d$-compression schemes, proving a strong version of a conjecture of \cite{floyd1995sample} for Littlestone dimension.

Order one differential equations on nonisotrivial algebraic curves

In this paper we provide new examples of geometrically trivial strongly minimal differential algebraic varieties living on nonisotrivial curves over differentially closed fields of characteristic zero. Our technique involves developing a theory of Kodaira-Spencer forms and building connections to deformation theory. In our development, we answer several open questions posed by Rosen and some natural questions about Manin kernels.

Finite-dimensional differential-algebraic permutation groups

Several structural results about permutation groups of finite rank definable in differentially closed fields of characteristic zero (and other similar theories) are obtained. In particular, it is shown that every finite rank definably primitive permutation group is definably isomorphic to an algebraic permutation group living in the constants. Applications include the verification, in differentially closed fields, of the finite Morley rank permutation group conjectures of Borovik-Deloro and Borovik-Cherlin. Applying the results to binding groups for internality to the constants, it is deduced that if complete types $p$ and $q$ are of rank $m$ and $n$, respectively, and are nonorthogonal, then the $(m+3)$rd Morley power of $p$ is not weakly orthogonal to the $(n+3)$rd Morley power of $q$. An application to transcendence of generic solutions of pairs of algebraic differential equations is given.

The degree of nonminimality is at most two

It is shown that if $p$ is a complete type of Lascar rank at least 2 over $A$, in the theory of differentially closed fields of characteristic zero, then there exists a pair of realisations, $a_1$ and $a_2$, such that $p$ has a nonalgebraic forking extension over $A,a_1,a_2$. Moreover, if $A$ is contained in the field of constants then $p$ already has a nonalgebraic forking extension over $A,a_1$. The results are also formulated in a more general setting.

Strong minimality of triangle functions

In this manuscript, we give a new proof of strong minimality of certain automorphic functions, originally results of Freitag and Scanlon (2017), Casale, Freitag, and Nagloo (2020), Bl\'azquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag, and Nagloo (2020). Our proof is shorter and conceptually different than those presently in the literature.

On the equations of Poizat and Li\'enard

We study the structure of the solution sets in universal differential fields of certain differential equations of order two, the Poizat equations, which are particular cases of Li\'enard equations. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for strong minimality for equations in this class and a complete classification of the algebraic relations for solutions of strongly minimal Poizat equations. We also give an analysis of the non strongly minimal cases as well as applications concerning the Liouvillian and Pfaffian solutions of some Li\'enard equations.

When any three solutions are independent

Given an algebraic differential equation of order greater than one, it is shown that if there is any nontrivial algebraic relation amongst any number of distinct nonalgebraic solutions, along with their derivatives, then there is already such a relation between three solutions. In the autonomous situation when the equation is over constant parameters the assumption that the order be greater than one can be dropped, and a nontrivial algebraic relation exists already between two solutions. These theorems are deduced as an application of the following model-theoretic result: Suppose $p$ is a stationary nonalgebraic type in the theory of differentially closed fields of characteristic zero; if any three distinct realisations of $p$ are independent then $p$ is minimal. If the type is over the constants then minimality (and complete disintegratedness) already follow from knowing that any two realisations are independent. An algebro-geometric formulation in terms of $D$-varieties is given. The same methods yield also an analogous statement about families of compact K\"ahler manifolds.

On the Geometry of Stable Steiner Tree Instances

In this note we consider the Steiner tree problem under Bilu-Linial stability. We give strong geometric structural properties that need to be satisfied by stable instances. We then make use of, and strengthen, these geometric properties to show that $1.562$-stable instances of Euclidean Steiner trees are polynomial-time solvable. We also provide a connection between certain approximation algorithms and Bilu-Linial stability for Steiner trees.

Not Pfaffian

This short note describes the connection between strong minimality of the differential equation satisfied by an complex analytic function and the real and imaginary parts of the function being Pfaffian. This connection combined with a theorem of Freitag and Scanlon (2017) provides the answer to a question of Binyamini and Novikov (2017). We also answer a question of Bianconi (2016). We give what seem to be the first examples of functions which are definable in o-minimal expansions of the reals and are differentially algebraic, but not Pfaffian.

Bounding nonminimality and a conjecture of Borovik-Cherlin

Motivated by the search for methods to establish strong minimality of certain low order algebraic differential equations, a measure of how far a finite rank stationary type is from being minimal is introduced and studied: The {\em degree of nonminimality} is the minimum number of realisations of the type required to witness a nonalgebraic forking extension. Conditional on the truth of a conjecture of Borovik and Cherlin on the generic multiple-transitivity of homogeneous spaces definable in the stable theory being considered, it is shown that the nonminimality degree is bounded by the $U$-rank plus $2$. The Borovik-Cherlin conjecture itself is verified for algebraic and meromorphic group actions, and a bound of $U$-rank plus $1$ is then deduced unconditionally for differentially closed fields and compact complex manifolds. An application is given regarding transcendence of solutions to algebraic differential equations.

Generic differential equations are strongly minimal

In this manuscript we develop a new technique for showing that a nonlinear algebraic differential equation is strongly minimal based on the recently developed notion of the degree of nonminimality of Freitag and Moosa. Our techniques are sufficient to show that generic order $h$ differential equations with nonconstant coefficients are strongly minimal, answering a question of Poizat (1980).

A differential approach to Ax-Schanuel, I

In this paper, we prove several Ax-Schanuel type results for uniformizers of geometric structures; our general results describe the differential algebraic relations between the solutions of the partial differential equations satisfied by the uniformizers. In particular, we give a proof of the full Ax-Schanuel Theorem with derivatives for uniformizers of simple projective structure on curves including unifomizers of any Fuchsian group of the first kind and any genus. Combining our techniques with those of Ax, we give a strong Ax-Schanuel result for the combination of the derivatives of the j-function and the exponential function. In the general setting of Shimura varieties, we obtain an Ax-Schanuel theorem for the derivatives of uniformizing maps. Our techniques combine tools from differential geometry, differential algebra and the model theory of differentially closed fields.

Some functional transcendence results around the Schwarzian differential equation

This paper centers around proving variants of the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass (ALW) theorem for analytic functions which satisfy Schwarzian differential equations. In previous work, the authors proved the ALW theorem for the uniformizers of genus zero Fuchsian groups, and in this work, we generalize that result in several ways using a variety of techniques from model theory, galois theory and geometry.
