Bifurcations of solitary waves in a coupled system of long and short waves

We consider families of solitary waves in the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation coupled with the linear Schrödinger (LS) equation. This model has been used to describe interactions between long and short waves. To characterize families of solitary waves, we consider a sequence of local (pitchfork) bifurcations of the uncoupled KdV solitons. The first member of the sequence is the KdV soliton coupled with the ground state of the LS equation, which is proven to be the constrained minimizer of energy for fixed mass and momentum. The other members of the sequence are the KdV solitons coupled with the excited states of the LS equation. We connect the first two bifurcations with the exact solutions of the KdV--LS system frequently used in the literature.

Exact solitary wave solutions for a coupled gKdV-Schrodinger system by a new ODE reduction method

A new method is developed for finding exact solitary wave solutions of a generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with p-power nonlinearity coupled to a linear Schrödinger equation arising in many different physical applications. This method yields 22 solution families, with p=1,2,3,4. No solutions for p>1 were known previously in the literature. For p=1, four of the solution families contain bright/dark Davydov solitons of the 1st and 2nd kind, obtained in recent work by basic ansatze applied to the ODE system for travelling waves. All of the new solution families have interesting features, including bright/dark peaks with (up to) p symmetric pairs of side peaks in the amplitude and a kink profile for the nonlinear part in the phase. The present method is fully systematic and involves several novel steps which reduce the travelling wave ODE system to a single nonlinear base ODE for which all polynomial solutions are found by symbolic computation. It is applicable more generally to other coupled nonlinear dispersive wave equations as well as to nonlinear ODE systems of generalized Hénon-Heiles form.

On the long-wave approximation of solitary waves in cylindrical coordinates

We address justification and solitary wave solutions of the cylindrical KdV equation which is formally derived as a long wave approximation of radially symmetric waves in a two-dimensional nonlinear dispersive system. For a regularized Boussinesq equation, we prove error estimates between true solutions of this equation and the associated cylindrical KdV approximation in the L2-based spaces. The justification result holds in the spatial dynamics formulation of the regularized Boussinesq equation. We also prove that the class of solitary wave solutions considered previously in the literature does not contain solutions in the L2-based spaces. This presents a serious obstacle in the applicability of the cylindrical KdV equation for modeling of radially symmetric solitary waves since the long wave approximation has to be performed separately in different space-time regions.
