Analysis and Comparison of Known and Randomly Generated S-boxes for Block Ciphers

Mathematically constructed S-boxes arise from algebraic structures and finite field theory to ensure strong, provable cryptographic properties. These mathematically grounded constructions allow for generation of thousands of S-Boxes with high nonlinearity, APN properties, and balanced avalanche characteristics, unlike fully random methods, which lack such theoretical guarantees in exchange for low complexity and more varied results. In this work, we compare mathematically constructed constructions with randomly generated ones to evaluate the relative weakness of the latter. We also establish an average measure of performance for randomly generated permutations, as well as random with forced cycle constraints, and compare them to well-established designs in a simple SPN setting.

A universal bioluminescence tomography system for pre-clinical image-guided radiotherapy research

CBCT-guided small animal irradiators encounter challenges in localizing soft-tissue targets due to low imaging contrast. Bioluminescence tomography (BLT) offers a promising solution, but they have largely remained in laboratorial development, limiting accessibility for researchers. In this work, we develop a universal, commercial-graded BLT-guided system (MuriGlo) designed to seamlessly integrate with commercial irradiators and empower researchers for translational studies. We demonstrate its capabilities in supporting in vitro and in vivo studies. The MuriGlo comprises detachable mouse bed, thermostatic control, mirrors, filters, and CCD, enabling multi-projection and multi-spectral imaging. We evaluate that the thermostatic control effectively sustains animal temperature at 37{\deg}C throughout imaging, and quantify that the system can detect as few as 61 GL261-AkaLuc cells in vitro. To illustrate how the MuriGlo can be utilized for in vivo image-guided research, we present 3 strategies, BLT-guided 5-arc, 2-field box, and BLI-guided single-beam, ranging from complicated high-conformal to simplest high-throughput plans. The high conformal BLT-guided 5-arc plan fully covers the gross tumor volume (GTV) at prescribed dose with minimal normal tissue exposure (3.9%), while the simplified, high-throughput BLT-guided 2-field box achieves 100% GTV coverage but results in higher normal tissue exposure (13.1%). Moreover, we demonstrate that the localization accuracy of MuriGlo for both widely-used SARRP and SmART irradiators is within1 mm, and the tumor coverage reaches over 97% with 0.75mm margin. The universal BLT-guided system offers seamless integration with commercial irradiators, achieving comparable localization accuracy, expected to supporting high-precision radiation research.

EchoWrist: Continuous Hand Pose Tracking and Hand-Object Interaction Recognition Using Low-Power Active Acoustic Sensing On a Wristband

Our hands serve as a fundamental means of interaction with the world around us. Therefore, understanding hand poses and interaction context is critical for human-computer interaction. We present EchoWrist, a low-power wristband that continuously estimates 3D hand pose and recognizes hand-object interactions using active acoustic sensing. EchoWrist is equipped with two speakers emitting inaudible sound waves toward the hand. These sound waves interact with the hand and its surroundings through reflections and diffractions, carrying rich information about the hand's shape and the objects it interacts with. The information captured by the two microphones goes through a deep learning inference system that recovers hand poses and identifies various everyday hand activities. Results from the two 12-participant user studies show that EchoWrist is effective and efficient at tracking 3D hand poses and recognizing hand-object interactions. Operating at 57.9mW, EchoWrist is able to continuously reconstruct 20 3D hand joints with MJEDE of 4.81mm and recognize 12 naturalistic hand-object interactions with 97.6% accuracy.

A Simple yet Brisk and Efficient Active Learning Platform for Text Classification

In this work, we propose the use of a fully managed machine learning service, which utilizes active learning to directly build models from unstructured data. With this tool, business users can quickly and easily build machine learning models and then directly deploy them into a production ready hosted environment without much involvement from data scientists. Our approach leverages state-of-the-art text representation like OpenAI's GPT2 and a fast implementation of the active learning workflow that relies on a simple construction of incremental learning using linear models, thus providing a brisk and efficient labeling experience for the users. Experiments on both publicly available and real-life insurance datasets empirically show why our choices of simple and fast classification algorithms are ideal for the task at hand.

Note on the Complex Networks and Epidemiology Part I: Complex Networks

Complex networks describe a wide range of systems in nature and society. Frequently cited examples include Internet, WWW, a network of chemicals linked by chemical reactions, social relationship networks, citation networks, etc. The research of complex networks has attracted many scientists' attention. Physicists have shown that these networks exhibit some surprising characters, such as high clustering coefficient, small diameter, and the absence of the thresholds of percolation. Scientists in mathematical epidemiology discovered that the threshold of infectious disease disappears on contact networks that following Scale-Free distribution. Researchers in economics and public health also find that the imitation behavior could lead to cluster phenomena of vaccination and un-vaccination. In this note, we will review the basic concepts of complex networks; Basic epidemic models; the development of complex networks and epidemiology.
