The Search for Magnetic Monopoles

After a short historical introduction and description of the properties of the magnetic monopole we briefly discuss the search for monopoles produced at accelerators and from the cosmos. We present in a little more detail the latest LHC experiment, MoEDAL, specifically designed to continue the search for the magnetic monopole and other highly ionizing messengers of new physics at the TeV scale. Lastly we mention a proposal to continue the search for monopoles with flux below the Parker Bound up to the GUT scale at a high altitude laboratory.

Exclusive Physics at the Tevatron

Groundbreaking studies of exclusive physics processes at the Tevatron have demonstrated that proton-(anti)proton colliders are not only quark-antiquark but also gluon-gluon colliders, photon-photon and photon - gluon colliders. These studies are briefly reviewed in this paper.

Exclusive Central Production and Diffractive W/Z Results from CDF II

We report recently published results on central exclusive production of di-jets and di-photons, and exclusive QED production of e+e- pairs. In addition, we discuss preliminary results on exclusive photoproduction of charmonium and bottomonium, exclusive QED production of mu+mu- pairs, and single diffractive W/Z production. All the presented results were extracted from data collected by the CDF II detector from proton-antiproton collisions at a c.m.s. energy of 1.96 TeV. The implications of these results for the Large Hadron Collider are briefly examined.

Fermi Ball Detection

The detectability of charged SLAC-bag type structures is considered. These objects, known as Fermi balls, arise from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a biased discrete symmetry in the early universe. Two classes of experimental searches are discussed. Since Fermi balls in the theoretically favoured mass range are absorbed by the atmosphere, direct experimental searches are confined to space-based facilities. Simple spectrometer and time of flight analysis give a quantitative estimate of Fermi ball mass up to a limit set by the system's tracking resolution. For the ASTROMAG facility, with a tracking resolution of 50 $μ$m the upper bound on detectable Fermi ball masses is of order $10^{15}$ GeV/c$^{2}$. Charged tracks with sagitta smaller than this resolution would provide evidence in favour of Fermi balls, but only give a lower bound on the discrete symmetry breaking scale $φ_{0}$. The second class of experimental search proposed relies on the detection of bound Fermi ball states that have been concentrated in terrestrial materials such as oceanic sediment.

A Precise Determination of $\tanβ$ from Heavy Charged Higgs Decay

We compute the energy spectrum of charged leptons in the decay $H^+\to \bar b+(t\to blν_l)$. The shape of the lepton spectrum obtained, and also the mean lepton energy, are sensitive to the handedness of the intermediate top quark. This sensitivity can be used to precisely determine $\tanβ$, a fundamental parameter of two Higgs doublet models.
