All-charm tetraquarks

We investigate four-body states with only charm quarks. Working in a large but finite oscillator basis, we present a net binding analysis to determine if the resulting states are stable against breakup into a pair of c-cbar mesons. We find several close-lying bound states in the two models we examine.

A study of $q {\bar q}$ states in transverse lattice QCD using alternative fermion formulations

In this work we investigate $q{\bar q}$ spectra and wavefunctions of light front transverse lattice Hamiltonians that result from different methods of formulating fermions on the transverse lattice. We adopt the one link approximation for the transverse lattice and Discrete Light Cone Quantization to handle longitudinal dynamics. We perform a detailed study of the continuum limit of DLCQ and associated techniques to manage severe light front infrared divergences. We explore the effects of various parameters of the theory, especially, the strength of the helicity-flip interaction and the link mass on spectra and wavefunctions.

A Non-Abelian Fourier Transform for Gauge Theories

We consider SU(2) gauge potentials over a space with a compactified dimension. A non-Abelian Fourier transform of the gauge potential in the compactified dimension is defined in such a way that the Fourier coefficients are (almost) gauge invariant. The functional measure and the gauge field strengths are expressed in terms of these Fourier coefficients. The emerging formulation of the non-Abelian gauge theory turns out to be an Abelian gauge theory of a set of fields defined over the initial space with the compactified dimension excluded. The Abelian theory contains an Abelian gauge field, a scalar field, and an infinite tower of vector matter fields, some of which carry Abelian charges. Possible applications of this formalism are discussed briefly.

J/$ψ$ production and suppression in nuclear collisions

In terms of a new QCD factorization formula for J/$ψ$ production, we calculate the J/$ψ$ suppression in nuclear collisions by including the multiple scattering between the pre-J/$ψ$ partonic states and the nuclear medium. We find agreement with all data on J/$ψ$ suppression in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, except a couple of points (the ``second drop'') at the highest $E_T$ bins of the new NA50 data.

The Challenge of Light-Front Quantisation: Recent Results

We explain what is the challenge of light-front quantisation, and how we can now answer it because of recent progress in solving the problem of zero modes in the case of non-Abelian gauge theories. We also give a description of the light-front Hamiltonian for SU(2) finite volume gluodynamics resulting from this recent solution to the problem of light-front zero modes.

Canonical Formulation of the Light-Front Gluodynamics and Quantization of the Non-Abelian Plane Waves

Without a gauge fixing, canonical variables for the light-front SU(2) gluodynamics are determined. The Gauss law is written in terms of the canonical variables. The system is qualified as a generalized dynamical system with first class constraints. Abeliazation is a specific feature of the formulation (most of the canonical variables transform nontrivially only under the action of an Abelian subgroup of the gauge transformations). At finite volume, a discrete spectrum of the light-front Hamiltonian $P_+$ is obtained in the sector of vanishing $P_-$. We obtain, therefore, a quantized form of the classical solutions previously known as non-Abelian plane waves. Then, considering the infinite volume limit, we find that the presence of the mass gap depends on the way the infinite volume limit is taken, which may suggest the presence of different ``phases'' of the infinite volume theory. We also check that the formulation obtained is in accord with the standard perturbation theory if the latter is taken in the covariant gauges.

Parton Scattering at Small-x and Scaling Violation

Scaling violation of inclusive jet production at small-$x$ in hadron scattering with increasing total collision energy is discussed. Perturbative QCD based on the factorisation theorem for hard processes and GLAPD evolution equations predicts a minimum for scaled cross-section ratio that depends on jet rapidity. Studies of such a scaling violation can reveal a vivid indication of new dynamical effects in the high-energy limit of QCD. The BFKL effects, which seem to be seen in recent L3 data at CERN LEP2, should give different results from GLAPD predictions.

A New Qualitative Prediction of the Parton Model for High Energy Hadron Collisions

Inclusive single jet production in hadron collisions is considered. It is shown that the QCD parton model predicts a nonmonotonic dependence of the inclusive cross section on the fraction of the energy deposited in the jet registered, if it is normalized on the same cross section measured at another collision energy. Specifically, if the cross section is normalized by the one measured at a higher collision energy, it possesses a minimum which depends on jet rapidity. This prediction can be tested at the Fermilab Tevatron, at the CERN LHC, and at the Very Large Hadron Collider under discussion.

On Mathematical Structure of Effective Observables

We decompose the Hilbert space of wave functions into two subspaces, and assign to a given observable two effective representatives that act in the model space. The first serves to determine some of the eigenvalues of the full observable, while the second serves to determine its matrix elements, in any basis in one of the subspaces, in terms of quantities pertaining to the model space. We also show that if the Hamiltonian of a physical system possesses symmetries then these symmetries continue to hold for its effective representatives of the first type. Maximum information about the system can be obtained in terms of two sets of effective representatives. The first set of representatives is complete. Other observables that do not commute with all members of the complete set have only one type of representative.

Theta-Vacuum of the Bosonized Massive Light-Front Schwinger Model

The massive Schwinger model in bosonic representation is quantized on the light front using the Dirac--Bergmann method. The non-perturbative theta- vacuum in terms of coherent states of the gauge-field zero mode is derived and found to coincide with the massless case. On the other hand, the mass term becomes highly non-linear due to the constrained zero mode of the scalar field. A non-trivial mixing between the normal-mode and zero-mode sectors of the model is crucial for the correct calculation of the theta-dependence of the leading order mass correction to the chiral condensate.

J/ψSuppression in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

We propose a model for the production and suppression of J/ψmesons in high-energy hadronic collisions. We factorized the process into a production of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs of relative momentum $k=k_c-k_{\bar{c}}$ convoluted with a transition probability from the produced $c\bar{c}$ pairs into the observed J/$ψ$ mesons. As the produced $c\bar{c}$ pairs exit the nuclear matter, the multiple scattering between the colored $c$ and $\bar{c}$ and the nuclear medium increases the square of the relative momentum between the $c$ and $\bar{c}, q^2=-k^2$, such that some of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs gain enough invariant mass to transmute into open charm states. With only one parameter, the amount of energy gained by the produced $c\bar{c}$ pair per unit length in the nuclear medium, our model can fit all observed J/ψsuppression data including recent NA50 data from Pb-Pb collisions.

Twist Four Longitudinal Structure Function in Light-Front QCD

To resolve various outstanding issues associated with the twist four longitudinal structure function ${F_L^{τ=4}(x)}$ we perform an analysis based on the BJL expansion for the forward virtual photon-hadron Compton scattering amplitude and equal (light-front) time current algebra. Using the Fock space expansion for states and operators, we evaluate the twist four longitudinal structure function for dressed quark and gluon targets in perturbation theory. With the help of a new sum rule which we have derived recently we show that the quadratic and logarithmic divergences generated in the bare theory are related to corresponding mass shifts in old-fashioned light-front perturbation theory. We present numerical results for the $F_2$ and $F_L$ structure functions for the meson in two-dimensional QCD in the one pair approximation. We discuss the relevance of our results for the problem of the partitioning of hadron mass in QCD.

Sum rule for the twist four longitudinal structure function

We investigate the twist four longitudinal structure function $F_{L}^{τ=4}$ of deep inelastic scattering and show that the integral of ${F_{L}^{τ=4} \over x}$ is related to the expectation value of the fermionic part of the light-front Hamiltonian density at fixed momentum transfer. We show that the new relation, in addition to providing physical intuition on $F_{L}^{τ=4}$, relates the quadratic divergences of $F_{L}^{τ=4}$ to the quark mass correction in light-front QCD and hence provides a new pathway for the renormalization of the corresponding twist four operator. The mixing of quark and gluon operators in QCD naturally leads to a twist four longitudinal gluon structure function and to a new sum rule $ \int dx {F_L \over x}= 4 {M^2 \over Q^2}$, which is the first sum rule obtained for a twist four observable. The validity of the sum rule in a non-perturbative context is explicitly verified in two-dimensional QCD.

Relativistic Meson Spectroscopy and In-Medium Effects

We extend our earlier model of $q\bar q$ mesons using relativistic quasipotential (QP) wave equations to include open-flavor states and running quark-gluon coupling effects. Global fits to meson spectra are achieved with rms deviations from experiment of 43-50 MeV. We examine in-medium effects through their influence on the confining interaction and predict the confining strength at which the masses of certain mesons fall below the threshold of their dominant decay channel.
