Fermi surface reconstruction in FeSe under high pressure

We report Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements on FeSe under high pressure up to $P$ = 16.1 kbar. We find a sudden change in SdH oscillations at the onset of the pressure-induced antiferromagnetism at $P$ $\sim$ 8 kbar. We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: $k_BT_c/E_F$ $\sim$ 0.1 even at $P$ = 16.1 kbar.

Anomalous Fermi surface in FeSe seen by Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements

We have observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in FeSe. The Fermi surface deviates significantly from predictions of band-structure calculations and most likely consists of one electron and one hole thin cylinder. The carrier density is in the order of 0.01 carriers/ Fe, an order-of-magnitude smaller than predicted. Effective Fermi energies as small as 3.6 meV are estimated. These findings call for elaborate theoretical investigations incorporating both electronic correlations and orbital ordering.

Large and homogeneous mass enhancement in the rattling-induced superconductor KOs$_2$O$_6$

We have determined the Fermi surface in KOs$_2$O$_6$ ($T_c$ = 9.6 K and $B_{c2} \sim$ 32 T) via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements and a band structure calculation. We find effective masses up to 26(1) $m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass), which are unusually heavy for compounds where the mass enhancement is mostly due to electron-phonon interactions. Orbit-resolved mass enhancement parameters $λ_{dHvA}$ are large but fairly homogeneous, concentrated in the range 5 -- 8. We discuss origins of the large homogeneous mass enhancement in terms of rattling motion of the K ions.

Functionalized pentacene field-effect transistors with logic circuit applications

Funtionalized pentacene, 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene), field-effect transistors(FET's) were made by thermal evaporation or solution deposition method and the mobility was measured as a function of temperature and light power. The field-effect mobility ($μ$$_{\rm FET}$) has a gate-voltage dependent activation energy. A non-monotonic temperature dependence was observed at high gate voltage (V$_G$ $<$ -30 V) with activation energy E$_a$ $\sim$ 60 - 170 meV,depending on the fabrication procedure. The gate-voltage dependent mobility and non-monotonic temperature dependence indicates that shallow traps play important role in the transport of TIPS-pentacene films. The current in the saturation regime as well as mobility increase upon light illumination and is proportional to the light intensity, mainly due to the photoconductive response. Transistors with submicron channel length showed unsaturating current-voltage characteristics due to the short channel effect. Realization of simple circuits such as NOT(inverter), NOR, and NAND logic gates are demonstrated for thin film TIPS-pentacene transistors.

Millimeter-Wave Spectroscopy of the Organic spin-Peierls System b'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3

The first purely organic BEDT-TTF spin-Peierls system, b'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3, has been confirmed using a high-frequency electron spin resonance (EPR) cavity perturbation technique. The material exhibits the characteristics of a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin system above 30 K, but undergoes a second-order transition, at TSP = 33 K, to a singlet ground state, due to a progressive spin-lattice dimerization. The spin-Peierls state is evidenced by a sharp drop in the spin susceptibility below 24 K for the magnetic field parallel to each of the three principle axes (i.e. H7a, H7b, and H7c). The 1D chain axis has been identified as the crystallographic b axis from the g value analysis. The singlet-triplet gap, Ds(0) = 114 (+-21)K, was determined using a modified BCS theory. Also, we describe in some detail the millimeter-wave vector network analyzer (MVNA) for researchers who have interest in precision EPR measurements at higher magnetic fields and frequencies.
