Reflections on Traceability for Visualization Research

Decades of advocacy for reproducibility and replication have advanced open, transparent practices in the sciences. However, traditional notions of reproducibility fit poorly with design-oriented visualization research, where insights emerge through subjective, situated, and iterative work. So how can we ensure rigor and transparency in processes that are inherently unreproducible? To introduce transparency in design-oriented research, we propose to focus on traceability: surfacing the origin and development of research contributions based on rich sets of artifacts documenting the design process. We investigated traceability through a collaborative autoethnographic reflection that builds on several years of work exploring ways to make design-oriented research transparent. This exploration includes an experiment to build a tool to support traceability, which we called tRRRacer. The tRRRacer tool provided a testbed for us to operationalize the three tenets of a traceable process: (1) Record abundant, annotated artifacts representative of research activities; (2) Report curated research threads that articulate rationale and evolution of the process, allowing others to (3) Read via interfaces that help retrace claims and assess plausibility. Reflecting on our experiences, we contribute a theorization of traceability and reflections on how we might support it.

NetPanorama: A Declarative Grammar for Network Construction, Transformation, and Visualization

This paper introduces NetPanorama, a domain-specific language and declarative grammar for interactive network visualization design that supports multivariate, temporal, and geographic networks. NetPanorama allows users to specify network visualizations as combinations of primitives and building blocks. These support network creation and transformation, including computing metrics; orderings, seriations and layouts; visual encodings, including glyphs, faceting, and label visibility; and interaction for exploration and modifying styling. This approach allows the creation of a range of visualizations including many types of node-link diagrams, adjacency matrices using diverse cell encodings and node orderings, arc diagrams, PivotGraph, small multiples, time-arcs, geographic map visualizations, and hybrid techniques such as NodeTrix. NetPanorama aims to remove the need to use multiple libraries for analysis, wrangling, and visualization. Consequently, NetPanorama supports the agile development of applications for visual exploration of networks and data-driven storytelling. NetworkNarratives: Data Tours for Visual Network Exploration and Analysis

This paper introduces semi-automatic data tours to aid the exploration of complex networks. Exploring networks requires significant effort and expertise and can be time-consuming and challenging. Distinct from guidance and recommender systems for visual analytics, we provide a set of goal-oriented tours for network overview, ego-network analysis, community exploration, and other tasks. Based on interviews with five network analysts, we developed a user interface (NetworkNarratives) and 10 example tours. The interface allows analysts to navigate an interactive slideshow featuring facts about the network using visualizations and textual annotations. On each slide, an analyst can freely explore the network and specify nodes, links, or subgraphs as seed elements for follow-up tours. Two studies, comprising eight expert and 14 novice analysts, show that data tours reduce exploration effort, support learning about network exploration, and can aid the dissemination of analysis results. NetworkNarratives is available online, together with detailed illustrations for each tour.
