A Class of Multiparameter Oscillatory Singular Integral Operators: Endpoint Hardy Space Bounds

We establish endpoint bounds on a Hardy space $H^1$ for a natural class of multiparameter singular integral operators which do not decay away from the support of rectangular atoms. Hence the usual argument via a Journé-type covering lemma to deduce bounds on product $H^1$ is not valid. We consider the class of multiparameter oscillatory singular integral operators given by convolution with the classical multiple Hilbert transform kernel modulated by a general polynomial oscillation. Various characterisations are known which give $L^2$ (or more generally $L^p, 1<p<\infty$) bounds. Here we initiate an investigation of endpoint bounds on the rectangular Hardy space $H^1$ in two dimensions; we give a characterisation when bounds hold which are uniform over a given subspace of polynomials and somewhat surprisingly, we discover that the Hardy space and $L^p$ theories for these operators are very different.

An abstract $L^2$ Fourier restriction theorem

An $L^2$ Fourier restriction argument of Bak and Seeger is abstracted to the setting of locally compact abelian groups. This is used to prove new restriction estimates for varieties lying in modules over local fields or rings of integers $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$.

Counting factorisations of monomials over rings of integers modulo $N$

A sharp bound is obtained for the number of ways to express the monomial $X^n$ as a product of linear factors over $\mathbb{Z}/p^α\mathbb{Z}$. The proof relies on an induction-on-scale procedure which is used to estimate the number of solutions to a certain system of polynomial congruences. The method also applies to more general systems of polynomial congruences that satisfy a non-degeneracy hypothesis.

A maximal restriction theorem and Lebesgue points of functions in F(L^p)

Fourier restriction theorems, whose study had been initiated by E.M. Stein, usually describe a family of a priori estimates of the L^q-norm of the restriction of the Fourier transform of a function f in L^p (say, on Euclidean space) to a given subvariety S, endowed with a suitabel measure. Such estimates allow to define the restriction Rf of the Fourier transform of an L^p-function to S in an operator theoretic sense. In this article, we begin to investigate the question what is the "intrinsic" pointwise relation between Rf and the Fourier transform of f, by looking at curves in the plane, for instance with non-vanishing curvature. To this end, we bound suitable maximal operators, including the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function of the Fourier transform of f restricted to S.

On a problem of Kahane in higher dimensions

We characterise those real analytic mappings between any pair of tori which carry absolutely convergent Fourier series to uniformly convergent Fourier series via composition. We do this with respect to rectangular summation. We also investigate uniform convergence with respect to square sums and highlight the differences which arise.

Exponential sums and polynomial congruences in two variables: the quasi-homogeneous case

We adapt ideas of Phong, Stein and Sturm and ideas of Ikromov and Müller from the continuous setting to various discrete settings, obtaining sharp bounds for exponential sums and the number of solutions to polynomial congruences for general quasi-homogeneous polynomials in two variables. This extends work of Denef and Sperber and also Cluckers regarding a conjecture of Igusa in the two dimensional setting by no longer requiring the polynomial to be nondegenerate with respect to its Newton diagram.

Problems on averages and lacunary maximal functions

We prove three results concerning convolution operators and lacunary maximal functions associated to dilates of measures. First, we obtain an $H^1$ to $L^{1,\infty}$ bound for lacunary maximal operators under a dimensional assumption on the underlying measure and an assumption on an $L^p$ regularity bound for some $p>1$. Secondly, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^2$ boundedness of lacunary maximal operator associated to averages over convex curves in the plane. Finally we prove an $L^p$ regularity result for such averages. We formulate various open problems.

A variation norm Carleson theorem

We strengthen the Carleson-Hunt theorem by proving $L^p$ estimates for the $r$-variation of the partial sum operators for Fourier series and integrals, for $p>\max\{r',2\}$. Four appendices are concerned with transference, a variation norm Menshov-Paley-Zygmund theorem, and applications to nonlinear Fourier transforms and ergodic theory.

Universal L^p improving for averages along polynomial curves in low dimensions

We prove sharp $L^p-L^q$ estimates for averaging operators along general polynomial curves in two and three dimensions. These operators are translation-invariant, given by convolution with the so-called affine arclength measure of the curve and we obtain universal bounds over the class of curves given by polynomials of bounded degree. Our method relies on a geometric inequality for general vector polynomials together with a combinatorial argument due to M. Christ. Almost sharp Lorentz space estimates are obtained as well.

A family of singular oscillatory integral operators and failure of weak amenability

A locally compact group $G$ is said to be weakly amenable if the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ admits completely bounded approximative units. Consider the family of groups $G_n=SL(2,\Bbb R)\ltimes H_n$ where $n\ge 2$, $H_n$ is the $2n+1$ dimensional Heisenberg group and $SL(2,\Bbb R)$ acts via the irreducible representation of dimension $2n$ fixing the center of $H_n$. We show that these groups fail to be weakly amenable. Following an idea of Haagerup for the case $n=1$ one can reduce matters to the problem of obtaining nontrivial uniform bounds for a family of singular oscillatory integral operators with product type singularities and polynomial phases. The result on the family $G_n$ and various other previously known results are used to settle the question of weak amenability for a large class of Lie groups, including the algebraic groups; we assume that the Levi-part has finite center.

Endpoint mapping properties of spherical maximal operators

For a function $f\in L^p(\Bbb R^d)$, $d\ge 2$, let $A_t f(x)$ be the mean of $f$ over the sphere of radius $t$ centered at $x$. Given a set $E\subset (0,\infty)$ of dilations we prove endpoint bounds for the maximal operator $M_E$ defined by $M_E f(x)=\sup_{t\in E} |A_t f(x)|$.

Pointwise convergence of lacunary spherical means

We show that if $f$ is locally in $L\log\log L$ then the lacunary spherical means converge almost everywhere. The argument given here is a model case for more general results on singular maximal functions and Radon transforms (see ref. 6).

Singular maximal functions and Radon transforms near L^1

We show that some singular maximal functions and singular Radon transforms satisfy a weak type $L\log\log L$ inequality. Examples include the maximal function and Hilbert transform associated to averages along a parabola. The weak type inequality yields pointwise convergence results for functions which are locally in $L\log\log L$.

Singular Integrals Associated to Hypersurfaces: $L^2$ Theory

We consider singular integrals associated to a classical Calderón-Zygmund kernel $K$ and a hypersurface given by the graph of $φ(ψ(t))$ where $φ$ is an arbitrary $C^1$ function and $ψ$ is a smooth convex function of finite type. We give a characterization of those Calderón-Zygmund kernels $K$ and convex functions $ψ$ so that the associated singular integral operator is bounded on $L^2$ for all $C^1$ functions $φ$.

Spherical maximal operators on radial functions

Let $A_tf(x)=\int f(x+ty)dσ(y)$ denote the spherical means in $\Bbb R^d$ ($dσ$ is surface measure on $S^{d-1}$, normalized to $1$). We prove sharp estimates for the maximal function $M_E f(x)=\sup_{t\in E}|A_tf(x)|$ where $E$ is a fixed set in $\Bbb R^+$ and $f$ is a {\it radial} function $\in L^p(\Bbb R^d)$. Let $p_d=d/(d-1)$ (the critical exponent of Stein's maximal function). For the cases (i) $p<p_d$, $d\ge 2$ and (ii) $p=p_d$, $d\ge 3$, and for $p\le q\le\infty$ we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $L^p\to L^{p,q}$ boundedness of the operator $M_E$.
