A scalable quantum-enhanced greedy algorithm for maximum independent set problems

We investigate a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for solving the Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem on regular graphs, combining the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) with a minimal degree classical greedy algorithm. The method leverages pre-computed QAOA angles, derived from depth-$p$ QAOA circuits on regular trees, to compute local expectation values and inform sequential greedy decisions that progressively build an independent set. This hybrid approach maintains shallow quantum circuit and avoids instance-specific parameter training, making it well-suited for implementation on current quantum hardware: we have implemented the algorithm on a 20 qubit IQM superconducting device to find independent sets in graphs with thousands of nodes. We perform tensor network simulations to evaluate the performance of the algorithm beyond the reach of current quantum hardware and compare to established classical heuristics. Our results show that even at low depth ($p=4$), the quantum-enhanced greedy method significantly outperforms purely classical greedy baselines as well as more sophisticated approximation algorithms. The modular structure of the algorithm and relatively low quantum resource requirements make it a compelling candidate for scalable, hybrid optimization in the NISQ era and beyond.

An edge-based and subspace reduction encoding scheme to solve the traveling salesman problem in quantum computers

This paper introduces a novel edge-based encoding technique for solving the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) on a quantum computer, reducing the required number of qubits. For implementation in real quantum devices, we applied the subspace reduction encoding to further reduce the dimension of the TSP solution space. We attack the TSP for 4-, 5-, and 6-city instances in both simulators and real quantum computers across different encoding frameworks. Optimal solutions of the 4-city TSP instance are obtained on state-of-the art IQM quantum computer. Our study presents a comparative analysis between edge-based encoding scheme and the node-based encoding methodology in the literature. Our findings indicate that the proposed encoding scheme outperforms conventional methods in terms of statistical measures, quantum resource utilization, and computational efficiency when applied to smaller TSP instances.

On-Premises Superconducting Quantum Computer for Education and Research

With a growing interest in quantum technology globally, there is an increasing need for accessing relevant physical systems for education and research. In this paper we introduce a commercially available on-site quantum computer utilizing superconducting technology, offering insights into its fundamental hardware and software components. We show how this system can be used in education to teach quantum concepts and deepen understanding of quantum theory and quantum computing. It offers learning opportunities for future talent and contributes to technological progress. Additionally, we demonstrate its use in research by replicating some notable recent achievements.

Benchmarking Digital-Analog Quantum Computation

Digital-Analog Quantum Computation (DAQC) has recently been proposed as an alternative to the standard paradigm of digital quantum computation. DAQC creates entanglement through a continuous or analog evolution of the whole device, rather than by applying two-qubit gates. This manuscript describes an in-depth analysis of DAQC by extending its implementation to arbitrary connectivities and by performing the first systematic study of its scaling properties. We specify the analysis for three examples of quantum algorithms, showing that except for a few specific cases, DAQC is in fact disadvantageous with respect to the digital case.
