Abstract structure of unitary oracles for quantum algorithms

We show that a pair of complementary dagger-Frobenius algebras, equipped with a self-conjugate comonoid homomorphism onto one of the algebras, produce a nontrivial unitary morphism on the product of the algebras. This gives an abstract understanding of the structure of an oracle in a quantum computation, and we apply this understanding to develop a new algorithm for the deterministic identification of group homomorphisms into abelian groups. We also discuss an application to the categorical theory of signal-flow networks.

Mixed quantum states in higher categories

There are two ways to describe the interaction between classical and quantum information categorically: one based on completely positive maps between Frobenius algebras, the other using symmetric monoidal 2-categories. This paper makes a first step towards combining the two. The integrated approach allows a unified description of quantum teleportation and classical encryption in a single 2-category, as well as a universal security proof applicable simultaneously to both scenarios.

A 2-Categorical Analysis of Complementary Families, Quantum Key Distribution and the Mean King Problem

This paper explores the use of 2-categorical technology for describing and reasoning about complex quantum procedures. We give syntactic definitions of a family of complementary measurements, and of quantum key distribution, and show that they are equivalent. We then show abstractly that either structure gives a solution to the Mean King problem, which we also formulate 2-categorically.

Extended 3-dimensional bordism as the theory of modular objects

A modular object in a symmetric monoidal bicategory is a Frobenius algebra object whose product and coproduct are biadjoint, equipped with a braided structure and a compatible twist, satisfying rigidity, ribbon, pivotality, and modularity conditions. We prove that the oriented 3-dimensional bordism bicategory of 1-, 2-, and 3-manifolds is the free symmetric monoidal bicategory on a single anomaly-free modular object.

Wormholes and Entanglement

Maldacena and Susskind have proposed a correspondence between wormholes and entanglement, dubbed ER=EPR. We study this in the context of 3d topological quantum field theory, where we show that the formation of a wormhole is the same process as creating a particle-antiparticle pair. A key feature of the ER=EPR proposal is that certain apparently entangled degrees of freedom turn out to be the same. We name this phenomenon "fake entanglement", and show how it arises in our topological quantum field theory model.

Groupoid Semantics for Thermal Computing

A groupoid semantics is presented for systems with both logical and thermal degrees of freedom. We apply this to a syntactic model for encryption, and obtain an algebraic characterization of the heat produced by the encryption function, as predicted by Landauer's principle. Our model has a linear representation theory that reveals an underlying quantum semantics, giving for the first time a functorial classical model for quantum teleportation and other quantum phenomena.

The Categorified Heisenberg Algebra I: A Combinatorial Representation

We give an introductory account of Khovanov's categorification of the Heisenberg algebra, and construct a combinatorial model for it in a 2-category of spans of groupoids. We also treat a categorification of $U(sl_n)$ in a similar way. These give rise to standard representations on vector spaces through a linearization process.

The Topology of Quantum Algorithms

We use a categorical topological semantics to examine the Deutsch-Jozsa, hidden subgroup and single-shot Grover algorithms. This reveals important structures hidden by conventional algebraic presentations, and allows novel proofs of correctness via local topological operations, giving for the first time a satisfying high-level explanation for why these procedures work. We also investigate generalizations of these algorithms, providing improved analyses of those already in the literature, and a new generalization of the single-shot Grover algorithm.

Bicategorical Semantics for Nondeterministic Computation

We outline a bicategorical syntax for the interaction between public and private information in classical information theory. We use this to give high-level graphical definitions of encrypted communication and secret sharing protocols, including a characterization of their security properties. Remarkably, this makes it clear that the protocols have an identical abstract form to the quantum teleportation and dense coding procedures, yielding evidence of a deep connection between classical and quantum information processing. We also formulate public-key cryptography using our scheme. Specific implementations of these protocols as nondeterministic classical procedures are recovered by applying our formalism in a symmetric monoidal bicategory of matrices of relations.

Higher Quantum Theory

We propose a 2-categorical formalism for describing classical information, quantum systems, and their interactions, based on the principle that classical information can be encoded as correlations between quantum systems. Applying this in the 2-category of 2-Hilbert spaces recovers ordinary quantum theory. The formalism gives a simple, graphical way to describe the specification and implementation of certain quantum procedures, which we use to investigate quantum teleportation, dense coding, complementarity and quantum erasure, verifying our results computationally using a software package.

Completeness of dagger-categories and the complex numbers

The complex numbers are an important part of quantum theory, but are difficult to motivate from a theoretical perspective. We describe a simple formal framework for theories of physics, and show that if a theory of physics presented in this manner satisfies certain completeness properties, then it necessarily includes the complex numbers as a mathematical ingredient. Central to our approach are the techniques of category theory, and we introduce a new category-theoretical tool, called the dagger-limit, which governs the way in which systems can be combined to form larger systems. These dagger-limits can be used to characterize the dagger-functor on the category of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and so can be used as an equivalent definition of the inner product. One of our main results is that in a nontrivial monoidal dagger-category with all finite dagger-limits and a simple tensor unit, the semiring of scalars embeds into an involutive field of characteristic 0 and orderable fixed field.

Categorical formulation of quantum algebras

We describe how dagger-Frobenius monoids give the correct categorical description of certain kinds of finite-dimensional 'quantum algebras'. We develop the concept of an involution monoid, and use it to construct a correspondence between finite-dimensional C*-algebras and certain types of dagger-Frobenius monoids in the category of Hilbert spaces. Using this technology, we recast the spectral theorems for commutative C*-algebras and for normal operators into an explicitly categorical language, and we examine the case that the results of measurements do not form finite sets, but rather objects in a finite Boolean topos. We describe the relevance of these results for topological quantum field theory.

A new description of orthogonal bases

We show that an orthogonal basis for a finite-dimensional Hilbert space can be equivalently characterised as a commutative dagger-Frobenius monoid in the category FdHilb, which has finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces as objects and continuous linear maps as morphisms, and tensor product for the monoidal structure. The basis is normalised exactly when the corresponding commutative dagger-Frobenius monoid is special. Hence orthogonal and orthonormal bases can be axiomatised in terms of composition of operations and tensor product only, without any explicit reference to the underlying vector spaces. This axiomatisation moreover admits an operational interpretation, as the comultiplication copies the basis vectors and the counit uniformly deletes them. That is, we rely on the distinct ability to clone and delete classical data as compared to quantum data to capture basis vectors. For this reason our result has important implications for categorical quantum mechanics.

A categorical framework for the quantum harmonic oscillator

This paper describes how the structure of the state space of the quantum harmonic oscillator can be described by an adjunction of categories, that encodes the raising and lowering operators into a commutative comonoid. The formulation is an entirely general one in which Hilbert spaces play no special role. Generalised coherent states arise through the hom-set isomorphisms defining the adjunction, and we prove that they are eigenstates of the lowering operators. Surprisingly, generalised exponentials also emerge naturally in this setting, and we demonstrate that coherent states are produced by the exponential of a raising morphism acting on the zero-particle state. Finally, we examine all of these constructions in a suitable category of Hilbert spaces, and find that they reproduce the conventional mathematical structures.
