Observation of a Transition Between Dynamical Phases in a Quantum Degenerate Fermi Gas

A proposed paradigm for out-of-equilibrium quantum systems is that an analogue of quantum phase transitions exists between parameter regimes of qualitatively distinct time-dependent behavior. Here, we present evidence of such a transition between dynamical phases in a cold-atom quantum simulator of the collective Heisenberg model. Our simulator encodes spin in the hyperfine states of ultracold fermionic potassium. Atoms are pinned in a network of single-particle modes, whose spatial extent emulates the long-range interactions of traditional quantum magnets. We find that below a critical interaction strength, magnetization of an initially polarized fermionic gas decays quickly, while above the transition point, the magnetization becomes long-lived, due to an energy gap that protects against dephasing by the inhomogeneous axial field. Our quantum simulation reveals a non-equilibrium transition predicted to exist but not yet directly observed in quenched s-wave superconductors.

Impact of non-equilibrium fluctuations on pre-thermal dynamical phase transitions in long-range interacting spin chains

We study the non-equilibrium phase diagram and the dynamical phase transitions occurring during the pre-thermalization of non-integrable quantum spin chains, subject to either quantum quenches or linear ramps of a relevant control parameter. We consider spin systems in which long-range ferromagnetic interactions compete with short-range, integrability-breaking terms. We capture the pre-thermal stages of the non-equilibrium evolution via a time-dependent spin wave expansion at leading order in the spin waves density. In order to access regimes with strong integrability breaking, instead, we perform numerical simulations based on the time-dependent variational principle with matrix product states. By investigating a large class of quantum spin models, we demonstrate that non-equilibrium fluctuations can significantly affect the dynamics near critical points of the phase diagram, resulting in a chaotic evolution of the collective order parameter, akin to the dynamics of a classical particle in a multiple-well potential subject to quantum friction. We also elucidate the signature of this novel dynamical phase on the time-dependent correlation functions of the local order parameter. We finally establish a connection with the notion of dynamical quantum phase transition associated with a possible non-analytic behavior of the return probability amplitude, or Loschmidt echo, showing that the latter displays cusps whenever the order parameter vanishes during its real-time evolution.

Shattered Time: Can a Dissipative Time Crystal Survive Many-Body Correlations?

We investigate the emergence of a time crystal in a driven-dissipative many-body spin array. In this system the interplay between incoherent spin pumping and collective emission stabilizes a synchronized non-equilibrium steady state which in the thermodynamic limit features a self-generated time-periodic pattern imposed by collective elastic interactions. In contrast to prior realizations where the time symmetry is already broken by an external drive, here it is only spontaneously broken by the elastic exchange interactions and manifest in the two-time correlation spectrum. Employing a combination of exact numerical calculations and a second-order cumulant expansion, we investigate the impact of many-body correlations on the time crystal formation and establish a connection between the regime where it is stable and a slow growth rate of the mutual information, signalling that the time crystal studied here is an emergent semi-classical out-of-equilibrium state of matter. We also confirm the rigidity of the time crystal to single-particle dephasing. Finally, we discuss an experimental implementation using long-lived dipoles in an optical cavity.

Quantum Critical Scaling under Periodic Driving

Universality is key to the theory of phase transition stating that the equilibrium properties of observables near a phase transition can be classified according to few critical exponents. These exponents rule an universal scaling behaviour that witnesses the irrelevance of the model's microscopic details at criticality. Here we discuss the persistence of such a scaling in a one-dimensional quantum Ising model under sinusoidal modulation in time of its transverse magnetic field. We show that scaling of various quantities (concurrence, entanglement entropy, magnetic and fidelity susceptibility) endures up to a stroboscopic time $τ_{bd}$, proportional to the size of the system. This behaviour is explained by noticing that the low-energy modes, responsible for the scaling properties, are resilient to the absorption of energy. Our results suggest that relevant features of the universality do hold also when the system is brought out-of-equilibrium by a periodic driving.

Thermal and nonthermal scaling of the Casimir-Polder interaction in a black hole spacetime

We study the Casimir-Polder force arising between two identical two-level atoms and mediated by a massless scalar field propagating in a black-hole background. We study the interplay of Hawking radiation and Casimir-Polder forces and find that, when the atoms are placed near the event horizon, the scaling of the Casimir-Polder interaction energy as a function of interatomic distance displays a transition from a thermallike character to a nonthermal behavior. We corroborate our findings for a quantum field prepared in the Boulware, Hartle-Hawking, and Unruh vacua. Our analysis is consistent with the nonthermal character of the Casimir-Polder interaction of two-level atoms in a relativistic accelerated frame [J. Marino et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 020403 (2014)], where a crossover from thermal scaling, consistent with the Unruh effect, to a nonthermal scaling has been observed. The two crossovers are a consequence of the noninertial character of the background where the field mediating the Casimir interaction propagates. While in the former case the characteristic crossover length scale is proportional to the inverse of the surface gravity of the black hole, in the latter it is determined by the inverse of the proper acceleration of the atoms.

Dynamical crossovers in prethermal critical states

We study the prethermal dynamics of an interacting quantum field theory with a N-component order parameter and $O(N)$ symmetry, suddenly quenched in the vicinity of a dynamical critical point. Depending on the initial conditions, the evolution of the order parameter, and of the response and correlation functions, can exhibit a temporal crossover between universal dynamical scaling regimes governed, respectively, by a quantum and a classical prethermal fixed point, as well as a crossover from a Gaussian to a non-Gaussian prethermal dynamical scaling. Together with a recent experiment, this suggests that quenches may be used in order to explore the rich variety of dynamical critical points occurring in the non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum many-body system. We illustrate this fact by using a combination of renormalization group techniques and a non-perturbative large-$N$ limit.

Casimir forces and quantum friction from Ginzburg radiation in atomic BECs

We theoretically propose an experimentally viable scheme to use an impurity atom in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, in order to realize condensed-matter analogs of quantum vacuum effects. In a suitable atomic level configuration, the collisional interaction between the impurity atom and the density fluctuations in the condensate can be tailored to closely reproduce the electric-dipole coupling of quantum electrodynamics. By virtue of this analogy, we recover and extend the paradigm of electromagnetic vacuum forces to the domain of cold atoms, showing in particular the emergence, at supersonic atomic speeds, of a novel power-law scaling of the Casimir force felt by the atomic impurity, as well as the occurrence of a quantum frictional force, accompanied by the Ginzburg emis- sion of Bogoliubov quanta. Observable consequences of these quantum vacuum effects in realistic spectroscopic experiments are discussed.

Universal short-time dynamics: boundary functional renormalization group for a temperature quench

We present a method to calculate short-time non-equilibrium universal exponents within the functional renormalization-group scheme. As an example, we consider the classical critical dynamics of the relaxational model A after a quench of the temperature of the system and calculate the initial slip exponent which characterizes the non-equilibrium universal short-time behaviour of both the order parameter and correlation functions. The value of this exponent is found to be consistent with the result of a perturbative dimensional expansion and of Monte Carlo simulations in three spatial dimensions.

Entanglement entropy in a periodically driven quantum Ising chain

We numerically study the dynamics of entanglement entropy, induced by an oscillating time periodic driving of the transverse field, h(t), of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain. We consider several realizations of h(t), and we find a number of results in analogy with entanglement entropy dynamics induced by a sudden quantum quench. After short-time relaxation, the dynamics of entanglement entropy synchronises with h(t), displaying an oscillatory behaviour at the frequency of the driving. Synchronisation in the dynamics of entanglement entropy, is spoiled by the appearance of quasi-revivals which fade out in the thermodynamic limit, and which we interpret using a quasi-particle picture adapted to periodic drivings. Taking the time-average of the entanglement entropy in the synchronised regime, we find that it obeys a volume law scaling with the subsystem's size. Such result is reminiscent of a thermal state or of a Generalised Gibbs ensemble of a quenched Ising chain, although the system does not heat up towards infinite temperature as a consequence of the integrability of the model.

Quantum dynamical field theory for non-equilibrium phase transitions in driven open systems

We develop a quantum dynamical field theory for studying phase transitions in driven open systems coupled to Markovian noise, where non-linear noise effects and fluctuations beyond semiclassical approximations influence the critical behaviour. We systematically compare the diagrammatics, the properties of the renormalization group flow and the structure of the fixed points, of the novel quantum dynamical field theory and of its semi-classical counterpart, which is employed to characterise dynamical criticality in three dimensional driven-dissipative condensates. As an application, we perform the Keldysh Functional Renormalization of a one dimensional driven open Bose gas, where a tailored diffusion Markov noise realises an analog of quantum criticality for driven-dissipative condensation. We find that the associated non-equilibrium quantum phase transition does not map into the critical behaviour of its three dimensional classical driven counterpart.

Non-thermal effects of acceleration in the resonance interaction between two uniformly accelerated atoms

We study the resonance interaction between two uniformly accelerated identical atoms, one excited and the other in the ground state, prepared in a correlated (symmetric or antisymmetric) state and interacting with the scalar field or the electromagnetic field in the vacuum state. In this case (resonance interaction), the interatomic interaction is a second-order effect in the atom-field coupling. We separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the resonance energy shift of the system, and show that only radiation reaction contributes, while Unruh thermal fluctuations do not affect the resonance interaction. We also find that beyond a characteristic length scale related to the atomic acceleration, non-thermal effects in the radiation reaction contribution change the distance-dependence of the resonance interaction. Finally, we find that previously unidentified features appear, compared with the scalar field case, when the interaction with the electromagnetic field is considered, as a consequence of the peculiar nature of the vacuum quantum noise of the electromagnetic field in a relativistically accelerated background.

Driven Markovian Quantum Criticality

We identify a new universality class in one-dimensional driven open quantum systems with a dark state. Salient features are the persistence of both the microscopic non-equilibrium conditions as well as the quantum coherence of dynamics close to criticality. This provides a non-equilibrium analogue of quantum criticality, and is sharply distinct from more generic driven systems, where both effective thermalization as well as asymptotic decoherence ensue, paralleling classical dynamical criticality. We quantify universality by computing the full set of independent critical exponents within a functional renormalization group approach.

Spin dipole oscillation and relaxation of coherently coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the static and the dynamic response of coherently coupled two component Bose-Einstein condensates due to a spin-dipole perturbation. The static dipole susceptibility is determined and it is shown to be a key quantity to identify the second order ferromagnetic transition occurring at large inter-species interaction. The dynamics, which is obtained by quenching the spin-dipole perturbation, is very much affected by the system being paramagnetic or ferromagnetic and by the correlation between the motional and the internal degrees of freedom. In the paramagnetic phase the gas exhibits well defined out-of-phase dipole oscillations, whose frequency can be related to the susceptibility of the system using a sum rule approach. In particular in the interaction SU (2) symmetric case, i.e., all the two-body interactions are the same, the external dipole oscillation coincides with the internal Rabi flipping frequency. In the ferromagnetic case, where linear response theory in not applicable, the system show highly non linear dynamics. In particular we observe phenomena related to ground state selection: the gas, initially trapped in a domain wall configuration, reaches a final state corresponding to the magnetic ground state plus small density ripples. Interestingly the time during which the gas is unable to escape from its initial configuration is found to be proportional to the square root of the wall surface tension.

Effects of a uniform acceleration on atom-field interactions

We review some quantum electrodynamical effects related to the uniform acceleration of atoms in vacuum. After discussing the energy level shifts of a uniformly accelerated atom in vacuum, we investigate the atom-wall Casimir-Polder force for accelerated atoms, and the van der Waals/Casimir-Polder interaction between two accelerated atoms. The possibility of detecting the Unruh effect through these phenomena is also discussed in detail.

Non-Equilibrium Dynamics of a Noisy Quantum Ising Chain: statistics of the work and prethermalization after a sudden quench of the transverse field

We discuss the non-equilibrium dynamics of a Quantum Ising Chain (QIC) following a quantum quench of the transverse field and in the presence of a gaussian time dependent noise. We discuss the probability distribution of the work done on the system both for static and dynamic noise. While the effect of static noise is to smooth the low energy threshold of the statistic of the work, appearing for sudden quenches, a dynamical noise protocol affects also the spectral weight of such features. We also provide a detailed derivation of the kinetic equation for the Green's functions on the Keldysh contour and the time evolution of observables of physical interest, extending previously reported results (J. Marino, A. Silva, Phys. Rev. B 86, 060408 (2012)), and discussing the extension of the concept of prethermalization which can be used to study noisy quantum many body hamiltonians driven out-of-equilibrium.

Pre-thermalization in a non-integrable quantum spin chain after a quench

We study the dynamics of a quantum Ising chain after the sudden introduction of a non-integrable long-range interaction. Via an exact mapping onto a fully-connected lattice of hard-core bosons, we show that a pre-thermal state emerges and we investigate its features by focusing on a class of physically relevant observables. In order to gain insight into the eventual thermalization, we outline a diagrammatic approach which complements the study of the previous quasi-stationary state and provides the basis for a self-consistent solution of the kinetic equation. This analysis suggests that both the temporal decay towards the pre-thermal state and the crossover to the eventual thermal one may occur algebraically.

Relaxation, pre-thermalization and diffusion in a noisy Quantum Ising Chain

We study the dynamics of thermalization resulting from a time-dependent noise in a Quantum Ising Chain subject to a sudden quench of the transverse magnetic field. For weak noise the dynamics shows a pre-thermalized state at intermediate time scales, eventually drifting towards an asymptotic infinite temperature steady state characterized by diffusive behavior. By computing analytically the density of kinks, as well as the transverse and longitudinal magnetic field correlators, we characterize these two regimes, their observability and their signatures in the various physical quantities.

Casimir-Polder forces between two accelerating atoms and the Unruh effect

The Casimir-Polder force between two atoms with equal uniform acceleration and separated by a constant distance R is considered. We show that, in the low-acceleration limit, while the near-zone R^{-6} behavior of the interatomic interaction energy is not changed by the acceleration of the atoms, the far-zone interaction energy decreases as R^{-5} instead of the well-known R^{-7} behavior for inertial atoms. Possibility of an indirect detection of the Unruh effect through measurements of the Casimir-Polder force between the two accelerating atoms is also suggested. We also consider a heuristic model for calculating the Casimir-Polder potential energy between the two atoms in the high-acceleration limit.
