On Non-extremal Instantons and Black Holes

We consider a general analysis and a specific ansatz for the study of non-supersymmetric solutions in arbitrary dimensions and various metric signatures. In all cases, we find that the conditions on the solutions can be written in terms of quadratic forms involving the gauge coupling of the theory and constants of integration associated with the scalar fields. Depending on the signature of the metric, our analysis should provide a general framework for finding non-extremal black holes, instantons, branes and S-branes.

Euclidean N=2 Supergravity

Euclidean special geometry has recently been investigated in the context of Euclidean supersymmetric theories with vector multiplets. In the rigid case, the scalar manifold is described by affine special para-Kahler geometry while the target geometries of Euclidean vector multiplets coupled to supergravity are given by projective special para-Kahler manifolds. In this letter, we derive the Killing spinor equations of Euclidean N=2 supergravity theories coupled to vector multiplets. These equations provide the starting point for finding general supersymmetric instanton solutions.

Einstein Weyl Structures and de Sitter Supergravity

The geometric structure of the null solutions of de Sitter D=5 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets is investigated. These solutions are Kundt metrics, constructed from a one-parameter family of three dimensional Gauduchon-Tod base spaces. We give examples, including the near horizon geometries previously found in arxiv:hep-th/10122120. In addition, two special cases are considered in detail. In the first, we consider solutions for which the Gauduchon-Tod base space is the Berger sphere. In the second case we take the null 1-form Killing spinor bilinear to be recurrent, so that the holonomy of the Levi-Civita connection is contained in Sim(3).

HKT Geometry and Fake Five Dimensional Supergravity

Recent results on the relation between hyper-Kahler geometry with torsion and solutions admitting Killing spinors in minimal de sitter supergravity are extended to more general supergravity models with vector multiplets.

Gauduchon-Tod structures, Sim holonomy and De Sitter supergravity

Solutions of five-dimensional De Sitter supergravity admitting Killing spinors are considered, using spinorial geometry techniques. It is shown that the "null" solutions are defined in terms of a one parameter family of 3-dimensional constrained Einstein-Weyl spaces called Gauduchon-Tod structures. They admit a geodesic, expansion-free, twist-free and shear-free null vector field and therefore are a particular type of Kundt geometry. When the Gauduchon-Tod structure reduces to the 3-sphere, the null vector becomes recurrent, and therefore the holonomy is contained in Sim(3), the maximal proper subgroup of the Lorentz group SO(4,1). For these geometries, all scalar invariants built from the curvature are constant. Explicit examples are discussed.

Five Dimensional Minimal Supergravities and Four Dimensional Complex Geometries

We discuss the relation between solutions admitting Killing spinors of minimal supergravities in five dimensions and four dimensional complex geometries. In the ungauged case (vanishing cosmological constant Λ=0) the solutions are determined in terms of a hyper-Kahler base space; in the gauged case (Λ<0) the complex geometry is Kahler; in the de Sitter case (Λ>0) the complex geometry is hyper-Kahler with torsion (HKT). In the latter case some details of the derivation are given. The method for constructing explicit solutions is discussed in each case.

Isometries of Half Supersymmetric Time-Like Solutions In Five Dimensions

Spinorial geometry techniques have recently been used to classify all half supersymmetric solutions in gauged five dimensional supergravity with vector multiplets. In this paper we consider solutions for which at least one of the Killing spinors generates a timelike Killing vector. We obtain coordinate transformations which considerably simplify the solutions, and in a number of cases, we obtain explicitly some additional Killing vectors which were hidden in the original analysis.

Null Half-Supersymmetric Solutions in Five-Dimensional Supergravity

We classify half-supersymmetric solutions of gauged N=2, D=5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets for which all of the Killing spinors generate null Killing vectors. We show that there are four classes of solutions, and in each class we find the metric, scalars and gauge field strengths. When the scalar manifold is symmetric, the solutions correspond to a class of local near horizon geometries recently found by Kunduri and Lucietti.

HKT Geometry and de Sitter Supergravity

Solutions of five dimensional minimal de Sitter supergravity admitting Killing spinors are considered. It is shown that the "timelike'' solutions are determined in terms of a four dimensional hyper-Kahler torsion (HKT) manifold. If the HKT manifold is conformally hyper-Kahler the most general solution can be obtained from a sub-class of supersymmetric solutions of minimal N=2 ungauged supergravity, by means of a simple transformation. Examples include a multi-BMPV de Sitter solution, describing multiple rotating black holes co-moving with the expansion of the universe. If the HKT manifold is not conformally hyper-Kahler, examples admitting a tri-holomorphic Killing vector field are constructed in terms of certain solutions of three dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry.

Constraining Maximally Supersymmetric Membrane Actions

We study the recent construction of maximally supersymmetric field theory Lagrangians in three spacetime dimensions that are based on algebras with a triple product. Assuming that the algebra has a positive definite metric compatible with the triple product, we prove that the only non-trivial examples are either the well known case based on a four dimensional algebra or direct sums thereof.

Half-Supersymmetric Solutions in Five-Dimensional Supergravity

We present a systematic classification of half-supersymmetric solutions of gauged N=2, D=5 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets for which at least one of the Killing spinors generate a time-like Killing vector.

Maximally Minimal Preons in Four Dimensions

Killing spinors of N=2, D=4 supergravity are examined using the spinorial geometry method, in which spinors are written as differential forms. By making use of methods developed in hep-th/0606049 to analyze preons in type IIB supergravity, we show that there are no simply connected solutions preserving exactly 3/4 of the supersymmetry.

Non-Supersymmetric Charged Domain Walls

We present general non-supersymmtric domain wall solutions with non-trivial scalar and gauge fields for gauged five-dimensional N=2 supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets.

General Supersymmetric Solutions of Five-Dimensional Supergravity

The classification of 1/4-supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional gauged supergravity coupled to arbitrary many abelian vector multiplets, which was initiated in hep-th/0401129, is completed. The structure of all solutions for which the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is null is investigated in both the gauged and the ungauged theories and some new solutions are constructed.

General Concentric Black Rings

Supersymmetric black ring solutions of five dimensional supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets are constructed. The solutions are asymptotically flat and describe configurations of concentric black rings which have regular horizons with topology $S^1 \times S^2$ and no closed time-like curves at the horizons.

Concentric Black Rings

We present new supersymmetric solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity that describe concentric black rings with an optional black hole at the common centre. Configurations of two black rings are found which have the same conserved charges as a single rotating black hole; these black rings can have a total horizon area less than, equal to, or greater than the black hole with the same charges. A numerical investigation of these particular black ring solutions suggests that they do not have closed timelike curves.

Uniqueness of Five-Dimensional Supersymmetric Black Holes

A classification of supersymmetric solutions of five dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to arbitrary many abelian vector multiplets is used to prove a uniqueness theorem for asymptotically flat supersymmetric black holes with regular horizons. It is shown that the near-horizon geometries of solutions for which the scalars and gauge field strengths are sufficiently regular on the horizon are flat space, AdS_3 x S^2, or the near-horizon BMPV solution. Furthermore, the only black hole which has the near-horizon BMPV geometry for its near-horizon geometry is the solution found by Chamseddine and Sabra.

A deformation of AdS_5 x S^5

We analyse a one parameter family of supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity that includes AdS_5 x S^5. For small values of the parameter the solutions are causally well-behaved, but beyond a critical value closed timelike curves (CTC's) appear. The solutions are holographically dual to N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a non-conformally flat background with non-vanishing R-currents. We compute the holographic energy-momentum tensor for the spacetime and show that it remains finite even when the CTC's appear. The solutions, as well as the uplift of some recently discovered AdS_5 black hole solutions, are shown to preserve precisely two supersymmetries.
