Pseudodifferential Weyl Calculus on (Pseudo-)Riemannian Manifolds

One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that it maps square integrable symbols to Hilbert-Schmidt operators, and that even (resp. odd) polynomials are mapped to even (resp. odd) differential operators. We also present a formula for the corresponding star product and give its asymptotic expansion up to the 4th order in Planck's constant.

1-dimensional Schrodinger operators with complex potentials

We discuss 1-dimensional Schrodinger operators with complex and locally integrable potentials that may have an arbitrary behavior at (finite or infinite) endpoints. The main tool of our analysis are Green's operators, that is, their various right inverses.

Group-theoretical origin of symmetries of hypergeometric class equations and functions

We show that properties of hypergeometric class equations and functions become transparent if we derive them from appropriate 2nd order differential equations with constant coefficients. More precisely, properties of the hypergeometric and Gegenbauer equation can be derived from generalized symmetries of the Laplace equation in 4, resp. 3 dimension. Properties of the confluent, resp. Hermite equation can be derived from generalized symmetries of the heat equation in 2, resp. 1 dimension. Finally, the theory of the ${}_1F_1$ equation (equivalent to the Bessel equation) follows from the symmetries of the Helmholtz equation in 2 dimensions. All these symmetries become very simple when viewed on the level of the 6- or 5-dimensional ambient space. Crucial role is played by the Lie algebra of generalized symmetries of these 2nd order PDE's, its Cartan algebra, the set of roots and the Weyl group. Standard hypergeometric class functions are special solutions of these PDE's diagonalizing the Cartan algebra. Recurrence relations of these functions correspond to the roots. Their discrete symmetries correspond to the elements of the Weyl group.

An Evolution Equation Approach to the Klein-Gordon Operator on Curved Spacetime

We develop a theory of the Klein-Gordon equation on curved spacetimes. Our main tool is the method of (non-autonomous) evolution equations on Hilbert spaces. This approach allows us to treat low regularity of the metric, of the electromagnetic potential and of the scalar potential. Our main goal is a construction of various kinds of propagators needed in quantum field theory.

Feynman Propagators on Static Spacetimes

We consider the Klein-Gordon equation on a static spacetime and minimally coupled to a static electromagnetic potential. We show that it is essentially self-adjoint on $C_{\mathrm{c}}^\infty$. We discuss various distinguished inverses and bisolutions of the Klein-Gordon operator, focusing on the so-called Feynman propagator. We show that the Feynman propagator can be considered the boundary value of the resolvent of the Klein-Gordon operator, in the spirit of the limiting absorption principle known from the theory of Schrödinger operators. We also show that the Feynman propagator is the limit of the inverse of the Wick rotated Klein-Gordon operator.

Quantization of Gaussians

Our paper is devoted to the oscillator semigroup, which can be defined as the set of operators whose kernels are centered Gaussian. Equivalently, they can be defined as the the Weyl quantization of centered Gaussians. We use the Weyl symbol as the main parametrization of this semigroup. We derive formulas for the tracial and operator norm of the Weyl quantization of Gaussians. We identify the subset of Gaussians, which we call quantum degenerate, where these norms have a singularity.

Equations of hypergeometric type in the degenerate case

We consider the three most important equations of hypergeometric type, ${}_2F_1$, ${}_1F_1$ and ${}_1F_0$, in the so-called degenerate case. In this case one of the parameters, usually denoted $c$, is an integer and the standard basis of solutions consists of a hypergeometric-type function and a function with a logarithmic singularity. This article is devoted to a thorough analysis of the latter solution to all three equations.

Homogeneous rank one perturbations

A holomorphic family of closed operators with a rank one perturbation given by the function $x^{\frac{m}{2}}$ is studied. The operators can be used in a toy model of renormalization group.

Bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians

We discuss self-adjoint operators given formally by expressions quadratic in bosonic creation and annihilation operators. We give conditions when they can be defined as self-adjoint operators, possibly after an infinite renormalization. We also discuss explicit formulas for their infimum. Our main motivation comes from Local Quantum Field Theory, which furnishes interesting examples of bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians that require an infinite renormalization.

From Conformal Group to Symmetries of Hypergeometric Type Equations

We show that properties of hypergeometric type equations become transparent if they are derived from appropriate 2nd order partial differential equations with constant coefficients. In particular, we deduce the symmetries of the hypergeometric and Gegenbauer equation from conformal symmetries of the 4- and 3-dimensional Laplace equation. We also derive the symmetries of the confluent and Hermite equation from the so-called Schrödinger symmetries of the heat equation in 2 and 1 dimension. Finally, we also describe how properties of the ${}_0F_1$ equation follow from the Helmholtz equation in 2 dimensions.

On Schroedinger operators with inverse square potentials on the half-line

The paper is devoted to operators given formally by the expression \begin{equation*} -\partial_x^2+\big(α-\frac14\big)x^{-2}. \end{equation*} This expression is homogeneous of degree minus 2. However, when we try to realize it as a self-adjoint operator for real $α$, or closed operator for complex $α$, we find that this homogeneity can be broken. This leads to a definition of two holomorphic families of closed operators on $L^2({\mathbb R}_+)$, which we denote $H_{m,κ}$ and $H_0^ν$, with $m^2=α$, $-1<\Re(m)<1$, and where $κ,ν\in{\mathbb C}\cup\{\infty\}$ specify the boundary condition at $0$. We study these operators using their explicit solvability in terms of Bessel-type functions and the Gamma function. In particular, we show that their point spectrum has a curious shape: a string of eigenvalues on a piece of a spiral. Their continuous spectrum is always $[0,\infty[$. Restricted to their continuous spectrum, we diagonalize these operators using a generalization of the Hankel transformation. We also study their scattering theory. These operators are usually non-self-adjoint. Nevertheless, it is possible to use concepts typical for the self-adjoint case to study them. Let us also stress that $-1<\Re(m)<1$ is the maximal region of parameters for which the operators $H_{m,κ}$ can be defined within the framework of the Hilbert space $L^2({\mathbb R}_+)$.

Continuous and holomorphic functions with values in closed operators

We systematically derive general properties of continuous and holomorphic functions with values in closed operators, allowing in particular for operators with empty resolvent set. We provide criteria for a given operator-valued function to be continuous or holomorphic. This includes sufficient conditions for the sum and product of operator-valued holomorphic functions to be holomorphic. Using graphs of operators, operator-valued functions are identified with functions with values in subspaces of a Banach space. A special role is thus played by projections onto closed subspaces of a Banach space, which depend holomorphically on a parameter.

Quantum fields with classical interactions

We describe basic types of free fields (1) neutral scalar bosons; (2) massive vector bosons; (3) massless vector bosons; (4) charged scalar bosons; (5) Dirac fermions; (6) Majorana fermions. We also consider free field perturbed by a linear or quadratic perturbation involving a classical (c-number) function: (1) neutral scalar bosons interacting with a linear source; (2) neutral scalar bosons interacting with a mass-like perturbation; (3) massive photons interacting with an classical current; (4) massless photons interacting with an classical current. (5) charged scalar bosons interacting with an electromagnetic potential; (6) Dirac fermions interacting with an electromagnetic potential.

Excitation spectrum of interacting bosons in the mean-field infinite-volume limit

We consider homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions, at zero temperature. We analyze its excitation spectrum in a certain kind of a mean field infinite volume limit. We prove that under appropriate conditions the excitation spectrum has the form predicted by the Bogoliubov approximation. Our result can be viewed as an extension of the result of R. Seiringer (arXiv:1008.5349 [math-ph]) to large volumes.

Hypergeometric type functions and their symmetries

We give a systematic and unified discussion of various classes of hypergeometric type equations: the hypergeometric equation, the confluent equation, the F_1 equation (equivalent to the Bessel equation), the Gegenbauer equation and the Hermite equation. In particular, we discuss recurrence relations of their solutions, their integral representations and discrete symmetries.

On the energy-momentum spectrum of a homogeneous Fermi gas

We consider translation invariant quantum systems in thermodynamic limit. We argue that their energy-momentum spectra should have shapes consistent with effective models involving quasiparticles. Our main example is second quantized homogeneous interacting Fermi gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions, at zero temperature. We expect that its energy-momentum spectrum has a positive energy gap and a positive critical velocity.

On the minimization of Hamiltonians over pure Gaussian states

A Hamiltonian defined as a polynomial in creation and annihilation operators is considered. After a minimization of its expectation value over pure Gaussian states, the Hamiltonian is Wick-ordered in creation and annihillation operators adapted to the minimizing state. It is shown that this procedure eliminates from the Hamiltonian terms of degree 1 and 2 that do not preserve the particle number, and leaves only terms that can be interpreted as quasiparticles excitations. We propose to call this fact Beliaev's Theorem, since to our knowledge it was mentioned for the first time in a paper by Beliaev from 1959.
