Order convergence in ordered vector spaces: compactness, atoms, pervasiveness, and ice cream spaces

We study order convergence in ordered vector spaces that are not necessarily lattices. In this setting, we consider two generalizations of order convergence on vector lattices, a directed and an undirected variant. We show that these notions agree for the class of pervasive spaces and extend several results concerning atomicity and order convergence in vector lattices to this class. In particular, we prove that a pervasive JB-algebra is associative, which strengthens a result of Sherman for C*-algebras. We also establish a number of new characterizations of pervasive spaces. Additionally, we systematically study a class of order unit spaces associated to Banach spaces, called ice cream spaces. We provide descriptions of both directed and undirected order convergences in these spaces, yielding examples where the two notions differ. We also consider other order-theoretic aspects of ice cream spaces, such as atoms and lattice operations, relating them to the geometry of the underlying Banach spaces. We demonstrate that ice cream spaces exhibit behavior very different from vector lattices and can serve as a rich source of counterexamples in the theory of ordered vector spaces.

Countability conditions in locally solid convergence spaces

We study (strong) first countability of locally solid convergence structures on Archimedean vector lattices. Among other results, we characterise those vector lattices for which relatively unform-, order-, and $σ$-order convergence, respectively, is (strongly) first countable. The implications for the validity of sequential arguments in the contexts of these convergences are pointed out.

L-valued integration

We develop integration theory for integrating functions taking values into a Dedekind complete unital $f$-algebra $\mathbb{L}$ with respect to $\mathbb{L}$-valued measures. We then discuss and prove completeness results of $\mathbb{L}$-valued $L^p$-spaces.

L-functional analysis

Inspired by the theories of Kaplansky-Hilbert modules and probability theory in vector lattices, we generalise functional analysis by replacing the scalars $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{C}$ by a real or complex Dedekind complete unital $f$-algebra $\mathbb{L}$; such an algebra can be represented as a suitable space of continuous functions. We set up the basic theory of $\mathbb{L}$-normed and $\mathbb{L}$-Banach spaces and bounded operators between them, we discuss the $\mathbb{L}$-valued analogues of the classical $\ell^p$-spaces, and we prove the analogue of the Hahn-Banach theorem. We also discuss the basics of the theory of $\mathbb{L}$-Hilbert spaces, including projections onto convex subsets, the Riesz Representation theorem, and representing $\mathbb{L}$-Hilbert spaces as a direct sum of $\ell^2$-spaces.

Limits of vector lattices

If $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space so that the Banach lattice $C(K)$ is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a dual of some Banach lattice, then $C(K)$ can be decomposed as the $\ell^\infty$-direct sum of the carriers of a maximal singular family of order continuous functionals on $C(K)$. In order to generalise this result to the vector lattice $C(X)$ of continuous, real valued functions on a realcompact space $X$, we consider direct and inverse limits in suitable categories of vector lattices. We develop a duality theory for such limits and apply this theory to show that $C(X)$ is lattice isomorphic to the order dual of some vector lattice $F$ if and only if $C(X)$ can be decomposed as the inverse limit of the carriers of all order continuous functionals on $C(X)$. In fact, we obtain a more general result: A Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$ is perfect if and only if it is lattice isomorphic to the inverse limit of the carriers of a suitable family of order continuous functionals on $E$. A number of other applications are presented, including a decomposition theorem for order dual spaces in terms of spaces of Radon measures.

The order bidual of C(X) for a realcompact space

It is well known that the bidual of $\mathrm C(X)$ for a compact space $X$, supplied with the Arens product, is isometrically isomorphic as a Banach algebra to $\mathrm C(\tilde X)$ for some compact space $\tilde X$. The space $\tilde X$ is unique up to homeomorphism. We establish a similar result for realcompact spaces: The order bidual of $\mathrm C(X)$ for a realcompact space $X$, when supplied with the Arens product, is isomorphic as an $f$-algebra to $\mathrm C(\tilde X)$ for some realcompact space $\tilde X$. The space $\tilde X$ is unique up to homeomorphism.

On order continuous duals of vector lattices of continuous functions on resolvable spaces

A topological space $X$ is called resolvable if it contains a dense subset with dense complement. Using only basic principles, we show that whenever the space $X$ has a resolving subset that can be written as an at most countably infinite union of subsets, in such a way that a given vector lattice of (not necessarily bounded) continuous functions on $X$ separates every point outside the resolving subset from each of its constituents, then the order continuous dual of this lattice is trivial. In order to apply this result in specific cases, we show that several spaces have resolving subsets that can be written as at most countably infinite unions of closed nowhere dense subsets. An appeal to the main result then yields, for example, that, under appropriate conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on separable spaces, metric spaces, and topological vector spaces have trivial order continuous duals if they separate points and closed nowhere dense subsets. Our results in this direction extend known results in the literature. We also show that, under reasonably mild separation conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on locally connected $T_1$ Baire spaces without isolated points have trivial order continuous duals. A discussion of the relation between our results and the non-existence of non-zero normal measures is included.

Category measures, the dual of $C(K)^δ$ and hyper-Stonean spaces

For a compact Hausdorff space $K$, we give descriptions of the dual of $C(K)^δ$, the Dedekind completion of the Banach lattice $C(K)$ of continuous, real-valued functions on $K$. We characterize those functionals which are $σ$-order continuous and order continuous, respectively, in terms of Oxtoby's category measures. This leads to a purely topological characterization of hyper-Stonean spaces.

A Note on the Completeness of Cc(X,Y)

It is known that there are complete, Hausdorff and regular convergence vector spaces X and Y such that Lc(X,Y), the space of continuous linear mappings from X into Y equipped with the continuous convergence structure, is not complete. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions on a convergence vector space Y such that Cc(X,Y) is complete for any convergence space X. In particular, we show that this is true for every complete and Hausdorff topological vector space Y.

Singularities in Space-time Foam Algebras

In this paper we consider the structure of the singularity sets associated with generalized functions in certain space-time foam algebras of generalized functions. In particular, we consider the algebra that is defined in terms of an asymptotic vanishing condition outside sets of first Baire category. It is shown that this algebra is in fact isomorphic to the earlier closed nowhere dense algebras. We also discuss general questions regarding singularities that can be handled in space-time foam algebras.

Beyond Topologies, Part I

Arguments on the need, and usefulness, of going beyond the usual Hausdorff-Kuratowski-Bourbaki, or in short, HKB concept of topology are presented. The motivation comes, among others, from well known {\it topological type processes}, or in short TTP-s, in the theories of Measure, Integration and Ordered Spaces. These TTP-s, as shown by the classical characterization given by the {\it four Moore-Smith conditions}, can {\it no longer} be incorporated within the usual HKB topologies. One of the most successful recent ways to go beyond HKB topologies is that developed in Beattie & Butzmann. It is shown in this work how that extended concept of topology is a {\it particular} case of the earlier one suggested and used by the first author in the study of generalized solutions of large classes of nonlinear partial differential equations.

Solutions of nonlinear PDEs in the completion of uniform convergence spaces

This paper deals with the solution of large classes of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) in spaces of generalized functions that are constructed as the completion of uniform convergence spaces. The existence result for the mentioned systems of equations are obtained as an application of a basic approximation result, which is formulated entirely in terms of usual real valued functions on open subsets of Euclidean n-space. The structure and regularity properties of the solutions are explained at the hand of suitable results relating to the structure of the completion of uniform convergence spaces that are defined as initial structures. In this regard, we include also a detailed discussion of the completion of initial uniform convergence spaces in general.

The uniform order convergence structure on ML(X)

The aim of this paper is to set up appropriate uniform convergence spaces in which to reformulate and enrich the Order Completion Method for nonlinear PDEs. In this regard, we consider an appropriate space ML(X) of normal lower semi-continuous functions. The space ML(X)= appears in the ring theory of C(X), and its various extensions, as well as in the theory of nonlinear PDEs. We define a uniform convergence structure on ML(X) such that the induced convergence structure is the order convergence structure. The uniform convergence space completion of ML(X) is constructed as the set of normal lower semi-continuous functions. It is then shown how these ideas may be applied to solve nonlinear PDEs. In particular, we construct generalized solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions, subject to an initial condition.

Generalized solutions to nonlinear first order Cauchy problems

The recent significant enrichment of the Order Completion Method for nonlinear Systems of PDEs resulted in the global existence of generalized solutions to a large class of such equations. In this paper we investigate the existence and regularity of the generalized solutions to a family of nonlinear first order Cauchy problems. The spaces of generalized solutions are obtained as the completions of suitably constructed uniform convergence spaces.

The order completion method for systems of nonlinear PDEs: Pseudo-topological perspectives

By setting up appropriate uniform convergence structures, we are able to reformulate the Order Completion Method of Oberguggenberger and Rosinger in a setting that more closely resembles the usual topological constructions for solving PDEs. As an application, we obtain existence and uniqueness results for the solutions of arbitrary continuous, nonlinear PDEs.
