Jet studies with STAR at RHIC: jet algorithms, jet shapes, jets in AA

Hard scattered partons are predicted to be well calibrated probes of the hot and dense medium produced in heavy ion collisions. Interactions of these partons with the medium w ill result in modifications of internal jet structure in Au+Au events compared to that observed in the p+p/d+Au reference. Full jet reconstruction is a promising tool to measu re these effects without the significant biases present in measurements with high-$\pT$ hadrons. One of the most significant challenges for jet reconstruction in the heavy ion environment comes from the correct characterization of the background fluctuations. The jet mome ntum irresolution due to background fluctuations has to be understood in order to recover the correct jet spectrum. Recent progress in jet reconstruction methodology is discu ssed, as well as recent measurements from p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200 \gev$.

Jet studies in 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions from the STAR experiment at RHIC

Recent progress in full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC makes it a promising tool for the quantitative study of the QCD at high energy density. Measurements in d+Au collisions are important to disentangle initial state nuclear effects from medium-induced k_T broadening and jet quenching. Furthermore, comparison to measurements in p+p gives access to cold nuclear matter effects. Inclusive jet p_T spectra and di-jet correlations (k_T) in 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions from the 2007-2008 RHIC run are presented.

Jet measurements in p+p and d+Au collisions with STAR at RHIC

Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions is a promising tool for the quantitative study of properties of the dense medium produced at RHIC. In addition to baseline measurements in p+p, results from d+Au collisions are needed to disentangle initial state nuclear effects from medium-induced k_T broadening and jet quenching. We present mid-rapidity inclusive jet p_T spectra and di-jet correlations (k_T) in 200~GeV p+p and d+Au collisions from the 2007-2008 RHIC run.

Jets in 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions from the STAR experiment at RHIC

Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions is a promising tool for the quantitative study of properties of the dense medium produced at RHIC. Measurements of d+Au collisions are important to disentangle initial state nuclear effects from medium-induced kT broadening and jet quenching. Study of jet production and properties in d+Au in combination with similar studies in p+p is an important baseline measurement needed to better understand heavy-ion results. We present mid-rapidity inclusive jet pT spectra and di-jet correlations (kT) in 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions from the 2007-2008 RHIC run. We discuss the methods used to correct the data for detector effects and for background in d+Au collisions.

Jets in heavy ion collisions at RHIC

Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions enables a complete study of the modification of jet structure due to energy loss in hot and dense QCD matter, but is challenging due to the high multiplicity environment. The STAR and PHENIX collaborations at RHIC have recently presented measurements of fully reconstructed jets from p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}$. We review the first results on inclusive jet spectra, di-jets and fragmentation functions and discuss their implications on understanding of jet quenching.

Initial state nuclear effects for jet production measured in $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}$ d+Au collisions by STAR

Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions is a promising tool for quantitative study of properties of the dense medium produced at RHIC. Measurements of d+Au collisions are important to disentangle initial state nuclear effects from medium-induced $k_\mathrm{T}$ broadening and jet quenching. We report measurements of mid-rapidity ($|η_{jet}| < 0.4|$) di-jet correlations in d+Au using high-statistics run 8 RHIC data at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}$.

Full jet reconstruction in 200 GeV p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions by STAR

Measurements of inclusive hadron suppression and di-hadron azimuthal correlations have provided important insights into jet quenching in hot QCD matter. However, they do not provide access to the energy of the hard scattering and are limited in their sensitivity since they can be affected by biases toward hard fragmentation and small energy loss. Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions enables a complete study of the modification of jet structure due to energy loss, but is challenging due to the high multiplicity environment. Study of jet production and properties in d+Au and p+p collisions provides important baseline measurement for jet studies in heavy-ion collisions. We report measurements of fully reconstructed jets in p+p, d+Au and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}$ from the STAR experiment at RHIC. Measurement of initial state nuclear effects in d+Au collisions utilizing di-jet azimuthal correlations is presented together with similar measurement in p+p collisions. Inclusive jet $\pt$ spectra and fragmentation functions in p+p and central Au+Au collisions are reported, with subsequent studies of jet nuclear modification factor, jet energy profile and modifications in the fragmentation function due to jet quenching.

STAR inner tracking upgrade - A performance study

Anisotropic flow measurements have demonstrated development of partonic collectivity in $200\mathrm{GeV}$ Au+Au collisions at RHIC. To understand the partonic EOS, thermalization must be addressed. Collective motion of heavy-flavor (c,b) quarks can be used to indicate the degree of thermalization of the light-flavor quarks (u,d,s). Measurement of heavy-flavor quark collectivity requires direct reconstruction of heavy-flavor hadrons in the low $\pt$ region. Measurement of open charm spectra to high $\pt$ can be used to investigate heavy-quark energy loss and medium properties. The Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT), a proposed upgrade to the STAR experiment at midrapidity, will measure $v_{2}$ of open-charm hadrons to very low $\pt$ by reconstructing their displaced decay vertices. The innermost part of the HFT is the PIXEL detector (made of two low mass monolithic active pixel sensor layers), which delivers a high precision position measurement close to the collision vertex. The Intermediate Silicon Tracker (IST), a 1-layer strip detector, is essential to improve hit identification in the PIXEL detector when running at full RHIC-II luminosity. Using a full GEANT simulation, open charm measurement capabilities of STAR with the HFT will be shown. Its performance in a broad $\pt$ range will be demonstrated on $v_{2}$ ($\pt > 0.5\mathrm{GeV}/c$) and $R_\mathrm{CP}$ ($\pt < 10\mathrm{GeV}/c$) measurements of $\D$ meson. Results of reconstruction of $\Lc$ baryon in heavy-ion collisions are presented.

Open charm measurement with HFT at STAR

Thermalization is one of the key questions in understanding the matter created in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Heavy-flavor quark collectivity could be used to indicate the degree of thermalization of the light-flavor quarks. Heavy quark energy loss could give important information on color charge density of the medium. Direct reconstruction of open charm hadrons is essential for these measurements. The Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) is a proposed upgrade of the STAR experiment. Full GEANT simulation of tracking with HFT was performed, showing its excellent capability to reconstruct open charm hadrons in broad p_T range at midrapidity. Estimated errors on measurement of D0 meson v_2 and R_{CP} are presented.
