When Shannon and Khinchin meet Shore and Johnson: equivalence of information theory and statistical inference axiomatics

We propose a unified framework for both Shannon-Khinchin and Shore-Johnson axiomatic systems. We do it by rephrasing Shannon-Khinchine axioms in terms of generalized arithmetics of Kolmogorov and Nagumo. We prove that the two axiomatic schemes yield identical classes of entropic functionals -- Uffink class of entropies. This allows to re-establish the entropic parallelism between information theory and statistical inference that has seemed to be "broken" by the use of non-Shannonian entropies.

Information geometry of scaling expansions of non-exponentially growing configuration spaces

Many stochastic complex systems are characterized by the fact that their configuration space doesn't grow exponentially as a function of the degrees of freedom. The use of scaling expansions is a natural way to measure the asymptotic growth of the configuration space volume in terms of the scaling exponents of the system. These scaling exponents can, in turn, be used to define universality classes that uniquely determine the statistics of a system. Every system belongs to one of these classes. Here we derive the information geometry of scaling expansions of sample spaces. In particular, we present the deformed logarithms and the metric in a systematic and coherent way. We observe a phase transition for the curvature. The phase transition can be well measured by the characteristic length r, corresponding to a ball with radius 2r having the same curvature as the statistical manifold. Increasing characteristic length with respect to the size of the system is associated with sub-exponential sample space growth is associated with strongly constrained and correlated complex systems. Decreasing of the characteristic length corresponds to super-exponential sample space growth that occurs for example in systems that develop structure as they evolve. Constant curvature means exponential sample space growth that is associated with multinomial statistics, and traditional Boltzmann-Gibbs, or Shannon statistics applies. This allows us to characterize transitions between statistical manifolds corresponding to different families of probability distributions.

Comment on "Rényi entropy yields artifficial biases not in the data and incorrect updating due to the infinite-size data"

In their recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 99 (2019) 032134], T. Oikinomou and B. Bagci have argued that Rényi entropy is ill-suited for inference purposes because it is not consistent with the Shore{ Johnson axioms of statistical estimation theory. In this Comment we seek to clarify the latter statement by showing that there are several issues in Oikinomou{Bagci reasonings which lead to erroneous conclusions. When all these issues are properly accounted for, no violation of Shore- Johnson axioms is found.

Maximum Entropy Principle in statistical inference: case for non-Shannonian entropies

In this letter we show that the Shore--Johnson axioms for Maximum Entropy Principle in statistical estimation theory account for a considerably wider class of entropic functional than previously thought. Apart from a formal side of the proof, we substantiate our point by analyzing the effect of weak correlations and discuss two pertinent examples: $2$-qubit quantum system and strongly interacting nuclear systems.

Information geometric duality of $ϕ$-deformed exponential families

In the world of generalized entropies---which, for example, play a role in physical systems with sub- and super-exponential phasespace growth per degree of freedom---there are two ways for implementing constraints in the maximum entropy principle: linear- and escort constraints. Both appear naturally in different contexts. Linear constraints appear e.g. in physical systems, when additional information about the system is available through higher moments. Escort distributions appear naturally in the context of multifractals and information geometry. It was shown recently that there exists a fundamental duality that relates both approaches on the basis of the corresponding deformed logarithms (deformed-log duality). Here we show that there exists another duality that arises in the context of information geometry, relating the Fisher information of $ϕ$-deformed exponential families that correspond to linear constraints (as studied by J. Naudts), with those that are based on escort constraints (as studied by S.-I. Amari). We explicitly demonstrate this information geometric duality for the case of $(c,d)$-entropy that covers all situations that are compatible with the first three Shannon-Khinchin axioms, and that include Shannon, Tsallis, Anteneodo-Plastino entropy, and many more as special cases. Finally, we discuss the relation between the deformed-log duality and the information geometric duality, and mention that the escort distributions arising in the two dualities are generally different and only coincide for the case of the Tsallis deformation.

Series representation of the pricing formula for the European option driven by space-time fractional diffusion

In this paper, we show that the price of an European call option, whose underlying asset price is driven by the space-time fractional diffusion, can be expressed in terms of rapidly convergent double-series. The series formula can be obtained from the Mellin-Barnes representation of the option price with help of residue summation in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We also derive the series representation for the associated risk-neutral factors, obtained by Esscher transform of the space-time fractional Green functions.

Classification of complex systems by their sample-space scaling exponents

The nature of statistics, statistical mechanics and consequently the thermodynamics of stochastic systems is largely determined by how the number of states $W(N)$ depends on the size $N$ of the system. Here we propose a scaling expansion of the phasespace volume $W(N)$ of a stochastic system. The corresponding expansion coefficients (exponents) define the universality class the system belongs to. Systems within the same universality class share the same statistics and thermodynamics. For sub-exponentially growing systems such expansions have been shown to exist. By using the scaling expansion this classification can be extended to all stochastic systems, including correlated, constraint and super-exponential systems. The extensive entropy of these systems can be easily expressed in terms of thee scaling exponents. Systems with super-exponential phasespace growth contain important systems, such as magnetic coins that combine combinatorial and structural statistics. We discuss other applications in the statistics of networks, aging, and cascading random walks.

Option Pricing Models Driven by the Space-Time Fractional Diffusion: Series Representation and Applications

In this paper, we focus on option pricing models based on space-time fractional diffusion. We briefly revise recent results which show that the option price can be represented in the terms of rapidly converging double-series and apply these results to the data from real markets. We focus on estimation of model parameters from the market data and estimation of implied volatility within the space-time fractional option pricing models.

Point Divergence Gain and Multidimensional Data Sequences Analysis

We introduce novel information-entropic variables -- a Point Divergence Gain ($Ω^{(l \rightarrow m)}_α$), a Point Divergence Gain Entropy ($I_α$), and a Point Divergence Gain Entropy Density ($P_α$) -- which are derived from the Rényi entropy and describe spatio-temporal changes between two consecutive discrete multidimensional distributions. The behavior of $Ω^{(l \rightarrow m)}_α$ is simulated for typical distributions and, together with $I_α$ and $P_α$, applied in analysis and characterization of series of multidimensional datasets of computer-based and real images.

Least informative distributions in Maximum q-log-likelihood estimation

We use the Maximum $q$-log-likelihood estimation for Least informative distributions (LID) in order to estimate the parameters in probability density functions (PDFs) efficiently and robustly when data include outlier(s). LIDs are derived by using convex combinations of two PDFs, $f_ε=(1-ε)f_0+εf_1$. A convex combination of two PDFs is considered as a contamination $f_1$ as outlier(s) to underlying $f_0$ distributions and $f_ε$ is a contaminated distribution. The optimal criterion is obtained by minimizing the change of Maximum q-log-likelihood function when the data have slightly more contamination. In this paper, we make a comparison among ordinary Maximum likelihood, Maximum q-likelihood estimations, LIDs based on $\log_q$ and Huber M-estimation. Akaike and Bayesian information criterions (AIC and BIC) based on $\log_q$ and LID are proposed to assess the fitting performance of functions. Real data sets are applied to test the fitting performance of estimating functions that include shape, scale and location parameters.

Non-Gaussian analytic option pricing: a closed formula for the Lévy-stable model

We establish an explicit pricing formula for the class of Lévy-stable models with maximal negative asymmetry (Log-Lévy model with finite moments and stability parameter $1<α\leq 2$) in the form of rapidly converging series. The series is obtained with help of Mellin transform and the residue theory in $\mathbb{C}^2$. The resulting formula enables the straightforward evaluation of an European option with arbitrary accuracy without the use of numerical techniques. The formula can be used by any practitioner, even if not familiar with the underlying mathematical techniques. We test the efficiency of the formula, and compare it with numerical methods.

On the uniqueness theorem for pseudo-additive entropies

We discuss the idea that the Tsallis-type (q-additive) entropic chain rule allows for a wider class of entropic functionals than previously thought. In particular, we point out that the ensuing entropy solutions (e.g., Tsallis entropy) can be determined uniquely only when one fixes the prescription for handling conditional entropies. Our point is substantiated with the Darótzy's mapping theorem and DeFinetti-Kolmogorov theorem for escort distributions and illustrated with a number of examples. Connection with Landsberg's classification of non-extensive thermodynamical systems is also briefly discussed.

Transitions between superstatistical regimes: validity, breakdown and applications

Superstatistics is a widely employed tool of non-equilibrium statistical physics which plays an important role in analysis of hierarchical complex dynamical systems. Yet, its "canonical" formulation in terms of a single nuisance parameter is often too restrictive when applied to complex empirical data. Here we show that a multi-scale generalization of the superstatistics paradigm is more versatile, allowing to address such pertinent issues as transmutation of statistics or inter-scale stochastic behavior. To put some flesh on the bare bones, we provide a numerical evidence for a transition between two superstatistics regimes, by analyzing high-frequency (minute-tick) data for share-price returns of seven selected companies. Salient issues, such as breakdown of superstatistics in fractional diffusion processes or connection with Brownian subordination are also briefly discussed.

Rescaling the nonadditivity parameter in Tsallis thermostatistics

The paper introduces nonadditivity parameter transformation group induced by Tsallis entropy. We discuss simple physical applications of a system in the contact with finite heat bath or with temperature fluctuations. With help of the transformation, it is possible to introduce generalized distributive rule in q-deformed algebra. We focus on MaxEnt distributions of Tsallis entropy with rescaled nonadditivity parameter under escort energy constraints. We show that each group element corresponds to one class of q-deformed distributions. Finally, we briefly discuss the application of the transformation to Jizba-Arimitsu Hybrid entropy and its connection to Average Hybrid entropy.

Transfer entropy between communities in complex networks

With the help of transfer entropy, we analyze information flows between communities of complex networks. We show that the transfer entropy provides a coherent description of interactions between communities, including non-linear interactions. To put some flesh on the bare bones, we analyze transfer entropies between communities of five largest financial markets, represented as networks of interacting stocks. Additionally, we discuss information transfer of rare events, which is analyzed by Rényi transfer entropy.

Distributional Mellin calculus in $\mathbb{C}^n$, with applications to option pricing

We discuss several aspects of Mellin transform, including distributional Mellin transform and inversion of multiple Mellin-Barnes integrals in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and its connection to residue expansion or evaluation of Laplace integrals. These mathematical concepts are demonstrated on several option-pricing models. This includes European option models such as Black-Scholes or fractional-diffusion models, as well as evaluation of quantities related to the optimal exercise price of American options.

Regularization and analytic option pricing under $α$-stable distribution of arbitrary asymmetry

We consider a non-Gaussian option pricing model, into which the underlying log-price is assumed to be driven by an $α$-stable distribution. We remove the a priori divergence of the model by introducing a Mellin regularization for the Lévy propagator. Using distributional and $\mathbb{C}^n$ tools, we derive an analytic closed formula for the option price, valid for any stability $α\in]1,2]$ and any asymmetry. This formula is very efficient and recovers previous cases (Black-Scholes, Carr-Wu); we calibrate the formula on market datas, make numerical tests, and discuss its many interesting properties.

Comment on "Generalized Shannon--Khinchin axioms and uniqueness theorem for pseudo-additive entropies" [Physica A 411 (2014) 138]

Recently in [Physica A 411 (2014) 138] Ilić and Stanković have suggested that there may be problem for the class of hybrid entropies introduced in [P.~Jizba and T.~Arimitsu, Physica A 340 (2004) 110]. In this Comment we point out that the problem can be traced down to the $q$-additive entropic chain rule and to a peculiar behavior of the DeFinetti--Kolmogorov relation for escort distributions. However, despite this, one can still safely use the proposed hybrid entropies in most of the statistical-thermodynamics considerations.
