Maximally Supersymmetric AdS Solutions and their Moduli Spaces

We study maximally supersymmetric AdS$_D$ solutions of gauged supergravities in dimensions $D \geq 4$. We show that such solutions can only exist if the gauge group after spontaneous symmetry breaking is a product of two reductive groups $H_R \times H_\mathrm{mat}$, where $H_R$ is uniquely determined by the dimension D and the number of supersymmetries N while $H_\mathrm{mat}$ is unconstrained. This resembles the structure of the global symmetry groups of the holographically dual SCFTs, where $H_R$ is interpreted as the R-symmetry and $H_\mathrm{mat}$ as the flavor symmetry. Moreover, we discuss possible supersymmetry preserving continuous deformations, which correspond to the conformal manifolds of the dual SCFTs. Under the assumption that the scalar manifold of the supergravity is a symmetric space we derive general group theoretical conditions on these moduli. Using these results we determine the AdS solutions of all gauged supergravities with more than 16 real supercharges. We find that almost all of them do not have supersymmetry preserving deformations with the only exception being the maximal supergravity in five dimensions with a moduli space given by $SU(1,1)/U(1)$. Furthermore, we determine the AdS solutions of four-dimensional N=3 supergravities and show that they similarly do not admit supersymmetric moduli.

Supersymmetric $AdS_6$ vacua in six-dimensional $N=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity

We study fully supersymmetric $AdS_6$ vacua of half-maxi\-mal $N=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity in six space-time dimensions coupled to $n$ vector multiplets. We show that the existence of $AdS_6$ backgrounds requires that the gauge group is of the form $G'\times G"\subset SO(4,n)$ where $G'\subset SO(3,m)$ and $G"\subset SO(1,n-m)$. In the $AdS_6$ vacua this gauge group is broken to its maximal compact subgroup $SO(3)\times H'\times H"$ where $H'\subset SO(m)$ and $H"\subset SO(n-m)$. Furthermore, the $SO(3)$ factor is the R-symmetry gauged by three of the four graviphotons. We further show that the $AdS_6$ vacua have no moduli that preserve all supercharges. This is precisely in agreement with the absence of supersymmetric marginal deformations in holographically dual five-dimensional superconformal field theories.

AdS$_5$ vacua from type IIB supergravity on $T^{1,1}$

We study maximally supersymmetric Anti-de Sitter backgrounds in consistent N=2 truncations of type IIB supergravity compactified on the Sasaki-Einstein manifold $T^{1,1}$. In particular, we focus on truncations that contain fields coming from the nontrivial second and third cohomology forms on $T^{1,1}$. These give rise to N=2 supergravity coupled to two vector- and two hypermultiplets (Betti-vector truncation) or one vector- and three hypermultiplets (Betti-hyper truncation), respectively. We find that both truncations admit AdS$_5$ backgrounds with the gauge group always being broken but containing at least an $U(1)_R$ factor. Moreover, in both cases we show that the moduli space of AdS vacua is nontrivial and of maximal dimension. Finally, we explicitly compute the metrics on these moduli spaces.

Classification of maximally supersymmetric backgrounds in supergravity theories

We study maximally supersymmetric solutions of all gauged or deformed supergravity theories in $D \ge 3$ space-time dimensions. For vanishing background fluxes the space-time background has to be either Minkowski or anti-de Sitter. We derive a simple criterion for the existence of solutions with non-trivial fluxes and determine all supergravities that satisfy it. We show that their solutions coincide with those of the corresponding ungauged theories and conclude that the known list of maximally supersymmetric solutions is exhaustive.

Moduli spaces of AdS_5 vacua in N=2 supergravity

We determine the conditions for maximally supersymmetric AdS_5 vacua of five-dimensional gauged N=2 supergravity coupled to vector-, tensor- and hypermultiplets charged under an arbitrary gauge group. In particular, we show that the unbroken gauge group of the AdS_5 vacua has to contain an U(1)_R-factor. Moreover we prove that the scalar deformations which preserve all supercharges form a Kahler submanifold of the ambient quaternionic Kahler manifold spanned by the scalars in the hypermultiplets.

N=4 Supersymmetric AdS5 Vacua and their Moduli Spaces

We classify the N=4 supersymmetric AdS5 backgrounds that arise as solutions of five-dimensional N=4 gauged supergravity. We express our results in terms of the allowed embedding tensor components and identify the structure of the associated gauge groups. We show that the moduli space of these AdS vacua is of the form SU(1,m)/(U(1)x SU(m)) and discuss our results regarding holographically dual N=2 SCFTs and their conformal manifolds.

Supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds in half-maximal supergravity and marginal operators of (1,0) SCFTs

We determine the supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds of seven-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities and show that they do not admit any deformations that preserve all 16 supercharges. We compare this result to the conformal manifold of the holographically dual (1,0) superconformal field theories and show that accordingly its representation theory implies that no supersymmetric marginal operators exist.

Hiding the little hierarchy problem in the NMSSM

In this paper we consider a set of soft supersymmetry breaking terms within the NMSSM which leads to a small hierarchy between the supersymmetry breaking scale and the electroweak scale. Specifically only the gaugino masses and the soft term in the Higgs sector are non-vanishing at the GUT scale. This pattern can be found in gaugino mediated models and in higher-dimensional orbifold GUTs. We study the phenomenology of this scenario and find different low energy spectra depending on the Yukawa coupling $\lambda$ of the NMSSM singlet. In particular, for low values of $\lambda$ the singlet is the lightest scalar and the singlino is the LSP while for large values of $\lambda$ both are heavy and the gravitino can be the LSP. The singlet pseudoscalar is very light in the entire parameter space.

Higher-Derivative Supergravity and Moduli Stabilization

We review the ghost-free four-derivative terms for chiral superfields in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and supergravity. These terms induce cubic polynomial equations of motion for the chiral auxiliary fields and correct the scalar potential. We discuss the different solutions and argue that only one of them is consistent with the principles of effective field theory. Special attention is paid to the corrections along flat directions which can be stabilized or destabilized by the higher-derivative terms. We then compute these higher-derivative terms explicitly for the type IIB string compactified on a Calabi-Yau orientifold with fluxes via Kaluza-Klein reducing the $(\alpha')^3 R^4$ corrections in ten dimensions for the respective $\mathcal{N}=1$ K\"{a}hler moduli sector. We prove that together with flux and the known $(\alpha')^3$-corrections the higher-derivative term stabilizes all Calabi-Yau manifolds with positive Euler number, provided the sign of the new correction is negative.

Maximally Supersymmetric AdS4 Vacua in N=4 Supergravity

We study AdS backgrounds of N=4 supergravity in four space-time dimensions which preserve all sixteen supercharges. We show that the graviphotons have to form a subgroup of the gauge group that consists of an electric and a magnetic SO(3)_+ x SO(3)_-. Moreover, these N=4 AdS backgrounds are necessarily isolated points in field space which have no moduli.

Quantum Corrections in String Compactifications on SU(3) Structure Geometries

We investigate quantum corrections to the classical four-dimensional low-energy effective action of type II string theory compactified on SU(3) structure geometries. Various methods previously developed for Calabi-Yau compactifications are adopted to determine - under some simple assumptions about the low-energy degrees of freedom - the leading perturbative corrections to the moduli space metrics in both alpha' and the string coupling constant. We find - in complete analogy to the Calabi-Yau case - that the corrections take a universal form dependent only on the Euler characteristic of the six-dimensional compact space.

N=2 Heterotic-Type II duality and bundle moduli

Heterotic string compactifications on a $K3$ surface $\mathfrak{S}$ depend on a choice of hyperk\"ahler metric, anti-self-dual gauge connection and Kalb-Ramond flux, parametrized by hypermultiplet scalars. The metric on hypermultiplet moduli space is in principle computable within the $(0,2)$ superconformal field theory on the heterotic string worldsheet, although little is known about it in practice. Using duality with type II strings compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold, we predict the form of the quaternion-K\"ahler metric on hypermultiplet moduli space when $\mathfrak{S}$ is elliptically fibered, in the limit of a large fiber and even larger base. The result is in general agreement with expectations from Kaluza-Klein reduction, in particular the metric has a two-stage fibration structure, where the $B$-field moduli are fibered over bundle and metric moduli, while bundle moduli are themselves fibered over metric moduli. A more precise match must await a detailed analysis of $R^2$-corrected ten-dimensional supergravity.

Dilaton domination in the MSSM and its singlet extensions

We analyse the current status of the dilaton domination scenario in the MSSM and its singlet extensions taking into account the measured value of the Higgs mass, the relic abundance of dark matter and constraints from SUSY searches at the LHC. We find that in the case of the MSSM the requirement of a dark matter relic abundance in accord with observation severely restricts the allowed parameter space, implying an upper bound on the superpartner masses which makes it fully testable at LHC-14. In singlet extensions with a large singlet-MSSM coupling $\lambda$ as favoured by naturalness arguments the coloured sparticles should again be within the reach of the LHC-14, while for small $\lambda$ it is possible to decouple the MSSM and singlet sectors, achieving the correct dark matter abundance with a singlino LSP while allowing for a heavy MSSM spectrum.

On Moduli Spaces in $\bf{AdS_4}$ Supergravity

We study the structure of the supersymmetric moduli spaces of ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity theories in $AdS_4$ backgrounds. In the ${\cal N}=1$ case, the moduli space cannot be a complex submanifold of the K\"ahler field space, but is instead real with respect to the inherited complex structure. In ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity the same result holds for the vector multiplet moduli space, while the hypermultiplet moduli space is a K\"ahler submanifold of the quaternionic-K\"ahler field space. These findings are in agreement with AdS/CFT considerations.

Examples of N=2 to N=1 supersymmetry breaking

In this paper we consider gauged N=2 supergravities which arise in the low-energy limit of type II string theories and study examples which exhibit spontaneous partial supersymmetry breaking. For the quantum STU model we derive the scalar field space and the scalar potential of the N=1 supersymmetric low-energy effective action. We also study the properties of the Minkowskian N=1 supersymmetricground states for a broader class of supergravities including the quantum STU model.

The rigid limit of N=2 supergravity

In this paper we review the rigid limit of N=2 supergravity coupled to vector and hypermultiplets. In particular we show how the respective scalar field spaces reduce to their global counterparts. In the hypermultiplet sector we focus on the relation between the local and rigid c-map.

Electrically gauged N=4 supergravities in D=4 with N=2 vacua

We study N=2 vacua in spontaneously broken N=4 electrically gauged supergravities in four space-time dimensions. We argue that the classification of all such solutions amounts to solving a system of purely algebraic equations. We then explicitly construct a special class of consistent N=2 solutions and study their properties. In particular we find that the spectrum assembles in N=2 massless or BPS supermultiplets. We show that (modulo U(1) factors) arbitrary unbroken gauge groups can be realized provided that the number of N=4 vector multiplets is large enough. Below the scale of partial supersymmetry breaking we calculate the relevant terms of the low-energy effective action and argue that the special Kahler manifold for vector multiplets is completely determined, up to its dimension, and lies in the unique series of special Kahler product manifolds.

Duality and Couplings of 3-Form-Multiplets in N=1 Supersymmetry

In this paper we study 3-form gauge fields in four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theories. We give the sigma model action together with its Poincare dual action for massless and massive 3-forms. The resulting target space geometries are Kahler where the respective field variables and superspace couplings are related by a Legendre transformation.
