Anomalous scaling at non-thermal fixed points of Burgers' and Gross-Pitaevskii turbulence

Scaling in the dynamical properties of complex many-body systems has been of strong interest since turbulence phenomena became the subject of systematic mathematical studies. In this article, dynamical critical phenomena far from equilibrium are investigated with functional renormalisation group equations. The focus is set on scaling solutions of the stochastic driven-dissipative Burgers equation and their relation to solutions known in the literature for Burgers and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang dynamics. We furthermore relate superfluid as well as acoustic turbulence described by the Gross-Pitaevskii model to known analytic and numerical results for scaling solutions. In this way, the canonical Kolmogorov exponent 5/3 for the energy cascade in superfluid turbulence is obtained analytically. We also get first results for anomalous exponents of acoustic and quantum turbulence. These are consistent with existing experimental data. Our results should be relevant for future experiments with, e.g., exciton-polariton condensates in solid-state systems as well as with ultra-cold atomic gases.

On the relevance of matter and glue dynamics for baryon number fluctuations

We investigate the impact of the matter and glue dynamics on baryon number fluctuations and the kurtosis of baryon number distribution. This is done within the framework of QCD-improved low energy effective models. In particular we include the momentum scale dependence of the quark-meson scattering and the non-trivial dispersions of both, quarks and mesons. On the gluonic side we take into account the backreaction of the matter sector on the glue dynamics. It is shown that the above fluctuations lead to a more rapid change of the baryon number fluctuations as well as the kurtosis of with the chiral crossover. We also study the signatures of quark confinement in low energy QCD. It is shown that contrary to the common picture the effective thermal distribution in the presence of confining glue backgrounds does not tend towards the colourless baryonic one. Instead, the dominance of colourless hadronic states is obtained in a subtle interplay of quark and glue contributions to the canonical potential.

Simple QED- and QCD-like Models at Finite Density

In this paper we discuss one-dimensional models reproducing some features of quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics at nonzero density and temperature. Since a severe sign problem makes a numerical treatment of QED and QCD at high density difficult, such models help to explore various effects peculiar to the full theory. Studying them gives insights into the large density behavior of the Polyakov loop by taking both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom into account, although in one dimension only the implementation of a global gauge symmetry is possible. For these models we evaluate the respective partition functions and discuss several observables as well as the Silver Blaze phenomenon.

Magnetic catalysis and inverse magnetic catalysis in QCD

We investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the QCD phase structure at vanishing density by solving the gluon and quark gap equations, and by studying the dynamics of the quark scattering with the four-fermi coupling. The chiral crossover temperature as well as the chiral condensate are computed. For asymptotically large magnetic fields we find magnetic catalysis, while we find inverse magnetic catalysis for intermediate magnetic fields. Moreover, for large magnetic fields the chiral phase transition for massless quarks turns into a crossover. The underlying mechanisms are then investigated analytically within a few simplifications of the full numerical analysis. We find that a combination of gluon screening effects and the weakening of the strong coupling is responsible for the phenomenon of inverse catalysis. In turn, the magnetic catalysis at large magnetic field is already indicated by simple arguments based on dimensionality.

Chiral symmetry breaking in continuum QCD

We present a quantitative analysis of chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavour continuum QCD in the quenched limit. The theory is set-up at perturbative momenta, where asymptotic freedom leads to precise results. The evolution of QCD towards the hadronic phase is achieved by means of dynamical hadronisation in the non-perturbative functional renormalisation group approach. We use a vertex expansion scheme based on gauge-invariant operators and discuss its convergence properties and the remaining systematic errors. In particular we present results for the quark propagator, the full tensor structure and momentum dependence of the quark-gluon vertex, and the four-fermi scatterings.

Transport Coefficients in Yang--Mills Theory and QCD

We calculate the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio $η/s$ in Yang--Mills theory from the Kubo formula using an exact diagrammatic representation in terms of full propagators and vertices using gluon spectral functions as external input. We provide an analytic fit formula for the temperature dependence of $η/s$ over the whole temperature range from a glueball resonance gas at low temperatures, to a high-temperature regime consistent with perturbative results. Subsequently we provide a first estimate for $η/s$ in QCD.

The phase structure of QCD for heavy quarks

We investigate the nature of the deconfinement and Roberge-Weiss transition in the heavy quark regime for finite real and imaginary chemical potential within the functional approach to continuum QCD. We extract the critical phase boundary between the first order and cross-over regions, and also explore tricritical scaling. Our results confirm previous ones from finite volume lattice studies.

Towards quantitative precision in the chiral crossover: masses and fluctuation scales

We investigate the relation between the physical pion pole and screening masses and the mesonic fluctuation scale in low-energy QCD, which relates to the curvature of the mesonic effective potential. This relation is important for the correct relative weight of quantum, thermal and density fluctuations. Hence, it governs the location of phase boundaries as well as the phase structure of QCD. The identification of the correct physics scales is also primarily important for the correct adjustment of the parameters of effective models for low-energy QCD. It is shown that subject to an appropriate definition of the latter, all these scales agree at vanishing temperature, while they deviate from each other at finite temperature.

Global Flows in Quantum Gravity

We study four-dimensional quantum gravity using non-perturbative renormalization group methods. We solve the corresponding equations for the fully momentum-dependent propagator, Newton's coupling and the cosmological constant. For the first time, we obtain a global phase diagram where the non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point of asymptotic safety is connected via smooth trajectories to a classical infrared fixed point. The theory is therefore ultraviolet complete and deforms smoothly into classical gravity as the infrared limit is approached.

Thermodynamics of QCD at vanishing density

We study the phase structure of QCD at finite temperature within a Polyakov-loop enhanced quark-meson model. Such a model describes the chiral as well as the confinement-deconfinement dynamics. In the present investigation, based on the approach and results put forward in [1-4], both, matter as well as glue fluctuations are included. We present results for the order parameters as well as some thermodynamic observables and find very good agreement with recent results from lattice QCD.

Exploring the Phase Structure and Thermodynamics of QCD

We put forward a Polyakov-loop extended quark meson model, where matter as well as glue fluctuations are taken into account, cf. [1]. The latter are included via a Polyakov-loop potential. Usually such a glue potential is based on Yang-Mills lattice data only. We show that a parametrisation of unquenching effects as proposed in [2], together with the inclusion of fluctuations via the functional renormalisation group [3,4], accounts for the relevant dynamics. This is demonstrated by a comparison of order parameters and thermodynamic observables to recent lattice results at vanishing chemical potential, where we find very good agreement.

Critical temperature and superfluid gap of the Unitary Fermi Gas from Functional Renormalization

We investigate the superfluid transition of the Unitary Fermi Gas by means of the Functional Renormalization Group, aiming at quantitative precision. We extract $T_{\rm c}/μ=0.38(2)$ and $Δ/μ=1.04(15)$ for the critical temperature and the superfluid gap at zero temperature, respectively, within a systematic improvement of the truncation for the effective average action. The key new ingredient in comparison to previous approaches consists in the use of regulators which cut off both frequencies and momenta. We incorporate renormalization effects on both the bosonic and the fermionic propagator, include higher order bosonic scattering processes, and investigate the regulator and specification parameter dependence for an error estimate. The ratio $Δ/T_{\rm c}=2.7(3)$ becomes less sensitive to the relative cutoff scale of bosons and fermions when improving the truncation. The techniques developed in this work are easily carried over to the cases of finite scattering length, lower dimensionality, and spin-imbalance.

Gluon spectral functions and transport coefficients in Yang--Mills theory

We compute non-perturbative gluon spectral functions at finite temperature in quenched QCD with the maximum entropy method. We also provide a closed loop equation for the spectral function of the energy-momentum tensor in terms of the gluon spectral function. This setup is then used for computing the shear viscosity over entropy ratio $η/s$ in a temperature range from about $0.4\, T_c$ to $4.5\, T_c$. The ratio $η/s$ has a minimum at about $1.25\, T_c$ with the value of about 0.115. We also discuss extensions of the present results to QCD.

Critical Point and Deconfinement from Dyson-Schwinger Equations

We employ the Dyson-Schwinger equations for quark and gluon propagators in order to study QCD with 2+1 flavours at finite temperature and density. In a suitable truncation for these equations, we determine the position of the critical end-point as well as the deconfinement temperature at all chemical potentials. For the latter, the Polyakov-loop potential is obtained from the QCD propagators. This is possible for the first time at finite chemical potential, with implications for effective models.

Gauge turbulence, topological defect dynamics, and condensation in Higgs models

The real-time dynamics of topological defects and turbulent configurations of gauge fields for electric and magnetic confinement are studied numerically within a 2+1D Abelian Higgs model. It is shown that confinement is appearing in such systems equilibrating after a strong initial quench such as the overpopulation of the infrared modes. While the final equilibrium state does not support confinement, metastable vortex defect configurations appear in the gauge field which are found to be closely related to the appearance of physically observable confined electric and magnetic charges. These phenomena are seen to be intimately related to the approach of a non-thermal fixed point of the far-from-equilibrium dynamical evolution, signalled by universal scaling in the gauge-invariant correlation function of the Higgs field. Even when the parameters of the Higgs action do not support condensate formation in the vacuum, during this approach, transient Higgs condensation is observed. We discuss implications of these results for the far-from-equilibrium dynamics of Yang-Mills fields and potential mechanisms how confinement and condensation in non-abelian gauge fields can be understood in terms of the dynamics of Higgs models. These suggest that there is an interesting new class of dynamics of strong coherent turbulent gauge fields with condensates.

On the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD

We discuss the phase structure and thermodynamics of QCD by means of dynamical chiral effective models. Quark and meson fluctuations are included via the functional renormalization group. We study the influence of confinement in addition to the impact of fluctuations by comparing the results of the chiral models to their Polyakov-loop extended versions. Furthermore, we discuss the mass sensitivity of the phase structure and thermodynamics and find interesting modifications close to the chiral limit.

Blocking-inspired supersymmetric actions: a status report

We provide a status report on the advances in blocking-inspired supersymmetric actions. This is done at the example of interacting supersymmetric quantum mechanics as well as the Wess-Zumino model. We investigate in particular the implications of a nontrivial realisation of translational symmetry on the lattice in this approach. We also discuss the locality of symmetry generators.

Two-colour QCD with heavy quarks at finite densities

We extend the density-of-states approach to gauge systems (LLR method) to QCD at finite temperature and density with heavy quarks. The approach features an exponential error suppression and yields the Polyakov loop probability distribution function over a range of more than hundred orders of magnitude. SU(2) gauge theory is considered in the confinement and the high-temperature phase, and at finite densities of heavy quarks. In the latter case, a smooth rise of the density with the chemical potential is observed, and no critical phenomenon associated with deconfinement due to finite densities is found.
