Spin polarization and attosecond time delay in photoemission from spin degenerate states of solids

After photon absorption, electrons from a dispersive band of a solid require a finite time in the photoemission process before being photoemitted as free particles, in line with recent attosecondresolved photoemission experiments. According to the Eisenbud-Wigner-Smith model, the time delay is due to a phase shift of different transitions that occur in the process. Such a phase shift is also at the origin of the angular dependent spin polarization of the photoelectron beam, observable in spin degenerate systems without angular momentum transfer by the incident photon. We propose a semi-quantitative model which permits to relate spin and time scales in photoemission from condensed matter targets and to better understand spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) experiments on spin degenerate systems. We also present the first experimental determination by SARPES of this time delay in a dispersive band, which is found to be greater than 26 as for electrons emitted from the sp-bulk band of the model system Cu(111).

Impact of finite temperatures on the transport properties of Gd from first principles

Finite temperature effects have a pronounced impact on the transport properties of solids. In magnetic systems, besides the scattering of conduction electrons by impurities and phonons, an additional scattering source coming from the magnetic degrees of freedom must be taken into account. A first-principle scheme which treats all these scattering effects on equal footing was recently suggested within the framework of the multiple scattering formalism. Employing the alloy analogy model treated by means of the CPA, thermal lattice vibrations and spin fluctuations are effectively taken into account. In the present work the temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistivity and the anomalous Hall effect in the strongly correlated metal Gd is considered. The comparison with experiments demonstrates that the proposed numerical scheme does provide an adequate description of the electronic transport at finite temperatures.

Temperature dependent determination of electron heat capacity and electron-phonon factor for Fe$_{0.72}$Cr$_{0.18}$Ni$_{0.1}$

A theoretical approach using ab initio calculations has been applied to study the interaction of an ultra-short laser pulse with the metal alloy Fe$_{0.72}$Cr$_{0.18}$Ni$_{0.1}$ (AISI 304). The electronic structure is simulated by taking into account the chemical and magnetic disorder of the alloy by the coherent potential approximation implemented in a fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker-formalism in the framework of spin density functional theory. Utilizing these predictions we determined the electron heat capacity and the electron-phonon coupling factor of Fe$_{0.72}$Cr$_{0.18}$Ni$_{0.1}$ in dependence on the electron temperature for two-temperature model applications. Compared with pure Fe a maximum deviation of 5~\% for the electron heat capacity and 25~\% for the electron-phonon coupling factor is found.

Topological phase transition induced by random substitution

The transition from topologically nontrivial to a trivial state is studied by first-principles calculations on bulk zinc-blende type (Hg$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$)(Te$_{1-x}$S$_x$) disordered alloy series. The random chemical disorder was treated by means of the Coherent Potential Approximation. We found that although the phase transition occurs at the strongest disorder regime (${x\approx 0.5}$), it is still manifested by well-defined Bloch states forming a clear Dirac cone at the Fermi energy of the bulk disordered material. The computed residual resistivity tensor confirm the topologically-nontrivial state of the HgTe-rich (${x<0.5}$), and the trivial state of the ZnS-rich alloy series (${x>0.5}$) by exhibiting the quantized behavior of the off-diagonal spin-projected component, independently on the concentration $x$.

Surface spin polarization of the non-stoichiometric Heusler compound Co2Mn(alpha)Si

Using a combined approach of spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, band structure and photoemission calculations we investigate the influence of bulk defects and surface states on the spin polarization of Co2Mn(alpha)Si thin films with bulk L21 order. We find that for Mn-poor alloys the spin polarization at EF is negative due to the presence of Co_Mn antisite and minority surface state contributions. In Mn-rich alloys, the suppression of Co(Mn) antisites leads to a positive spin polarization at the Fermi energy, and the influence of minority surface states on the photoelectron spin polarization is reduced.
