Spectral flow of Dirac operators with magnetic cable knot

We study the spectral flow of Dirac operators with magnetic links on $\mathbb{S}^3$. These are generalisations of Aharonov-Bohm solenoids where the magnetic fields contain finitely many field lines coinciding with the components of a link, the flux of each exhibiting the same $2π$-periodicity as A-B solenoids. We study the spectral flow of the loop obtained as tuning the flux from $0$ to $2π$ in the case of only one field line: we relate the spectral flows obtained for one given knot and its cable knots, and obtain that torus knots have trivial spectral flow. The operators are studied in their Coulomb gauge in $\mathbb{R}^3$ (seen as a chart of $\mathbb{S}^3$ through the stereographic projection), which is simply given by the Biot and Savart formula.

Friedrichs Extension and Min-Max Principle for Operators with a Gap

Semibounded symmetric operators have a distinguished self-adjoint extension, the Friedrichs extension. The eigenvalues of the Friedrichs extension are given by a variational principle that involves only the domain of the symmetric operator. Although Dirac operators describing relativistic particles are not semibounded, the Dirac operator with Coulomb potential is known to have a distinguished extension. Similarly, for Dirac-type operators on manifolds with a boundary a distinguished self-adjoint extension is characterised by the Atiyah--Patodi--Singer boundary condition. In this paper we relate these extensions to a generalisation of the Friedrichs extension to the setting of operators satisfying a gap condition. In addition we prove, in the general setting, that the eigenvalues of this extension are also given by a variational principle that involves only the domain of the symmetric operator.

The Second Order Correction to the Ground State Energy of the Dilute Bose Gas

We establish the Lee-Huang-Yang formula for the ground state energy of a dilute Bose gas for a broad class of repulsive pair-interactions in 3D as a lower bound. Our result is valid in an appropriate parameter regime of soft potentials and confirms that the Bogolubov approximation captures the right second order correction to the ground state energy.

Calculation of the critical temperature of a dilute Bose gas in the Bogoliubov approximation

Following an earlier calculation in 3D, we calculate the 2D critical temperature of a dilute, translation-invariant Bose gas using a variational formulation of the Bogoliubov approximation introduced by Critchley and Solomon in 1976. This provides the first analytical calculation of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature that includes the constant in the logarithm.

The Dirac-Frenkel Principle for Reduced Density Matrices, and the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes Equations

The derivation of effective evolution equations is central to the study of non-stationary quantum many-body sytems, and widely used in contexts such as superconductivity, nuclear physics, Bose-Einstein condensation and quantum chemistry. We reformulate the Dirac-Frenkel approximation principle in terms of reduced density matrices, and apply it to fermionic and bosonic many-body systems. We obtain the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations, respectively. While we do not prove quantitative error estimates, our formulation does show that the approximation is optimal within the class of quasifree states. Furthermore, we prove well-posedness of the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in energy space and discuss conserved quantities.

The Bogoliubov free energy functional I. Existence of minimizers and phase diagram

The Bogoliubov free energy functional is analysed. The functional serves as a model of a translation invariant Bose gas at positive temperature. We prove the existence of minimizers in the case of repulsive interactions given by a sufficiently regular two-body potential. Furthermore, we prove existence of a phase transition in this model and provide its phase diagram.

Self-adjointness and spectral properties of Dirac operators with magnetic links

We define Dirac operators on $\mathbb{S}^3$ (and $\mathbb{R}^3$) with magnetic fields supported on smooth, oriented links and prove self-adjointness of certain (natural) extensions. We then analyze their spectral properties and show, among other things, that these operators have discrete spectrum. Certain examples, such as circles in $\mathbb{S}^3$, are investigated in detail and we compute the dimension of the zero-energy eigenspace.

Analysis of zero modes for Dirac operators with magnetic links

In this paper we provide a means to approximate Dirac operators with magnetic fields supported on links in $\mathbb{S}^3$ (and $\mathbb{R}^3$) by Dirac operators with smooth magnetic fields. We then proceed to prove that under certain assumptions, the spectral flow of paths along these operators is the same in both the smooth and the singular case. We recently characterized the spectral flow of such paths in the singular case. This allows us to show the existence of new smooth, compactly supported magnetic fields in $\mathbb{R}^3$ for which the associated Dirac operator has a non-trivial kernel. Using Clifford analysis, we also obtain criteria on the magnetic link for the non-existence of zero modes.

The Bogoliubov free energy functional II. The dilute limit

We analyse the canonical Bogoliubov free energy functional at low temperatures in the dilute limit. We prove existence of a first order phase transition and, in the limit $a_0\to a$, we determine the critical temperature to be $T_{\rm{c}}=T_{\rm{fc}}(1+1.49(ρ^{1/3}a))$ to leading order. Here, $T_{\rm{fc}}$ is the critical temperature of the free Bose gas, $ρ$ is the density of the gas, $a$ is the scattering length of the pair-interaction potential $V$, and $a_0=(8π)^{-1}\widehat{V}(0)$ its first order approximation. We also prove asymptotic expansions for the free energy. In particular, we recover the Lee-Huang-Yang formula in the limit $a_0\to a$.

Proof of the Wehrl-type Entropy Conjecture for Symmmetric SU(N) Coherent States

The Wehrl entropy conjecture for coherent (highest weight) states in representations of the Heisenberg group, which was proved in 1978 and recently extended by us to the group $SU(2)$, is further extended here to symmetric representations of the groups $SU(N)$ for all $N$. This result gives further evidence for our conjecture that highest weight states minimize group integrals of certain concave functions for a large class of Lie groups and their representations.

A new look at Thomas-Fermi Theory

In this short note we argue that Thomas-Fermi Theory the simplest of all density functional theories, although failing to explain features such as binding or stability of negative ions, is surprisingly accurate in estimating sizes of atoms. We give both numerical, experimental and rigorous mathematical evidence for this claim. Motivated by this we formulate two new mathematical conjectures on the exactness of Thomas-Fermi Theory.

Diagonalization of bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians by Bogoliubov transformations

We provide general conditions for which bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians on Fock spaces can be diagonalized by Bogoliubov transformations. Our results cover the case when quantum systems have infinite degrees of freedom and the associated one-body kinetic and paring operators are unbounded. Our sufficient conditions are optimal in the sense that they become necessary when the relevant one-body operators commute.

Microscopic Derivation of the Ginzburg-Landau Model

We present a summary of our recent rigorous derivation of the celebrated Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, starting from the microscopic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model. Close to the critical temperature, GL arises as an effective theory on the macroscopic scale. The relevant scaling limit is semiclassical in nature, and semiclassical analysis, with minimal regularity assumptions, plays an important part in our proof.

Lieb-Thirring Bounds for Interacting Bose Gases

We study interacting Bose gases and prove lower bounds for the kinetic plus interaction energy of a many-body wave function in terms of its particle density. These general estimates are then applied to various types of interactions, including hard sphere (in 3D) and hard disk (in 2D) as well as a general class of homogeneous potentials.

The external field dependence of the BCS critical temperature

We consider the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer free energy functional for particles interacting via a two-body potential on a microscopic scale and in the presence of weak external fields varying on a macroscopic scale. We study the influence of the external fields on the critical temperature. We show that in the limit where the ratio between the microscopic and macroscopic scale tends to zero, the next to leading order of the critical temperature is determined by the lowest eigenvalue of the linearization of the Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Bogoliubov spectrum of interacting Bose gases

We study the large-N limit of a system of N bosons interacting with a potential of intensity 1/N. When the ground state energy is to the first order given by Hartree's theory, we study the next order, predicted by Bogoliubov's theory. We show the convergence of the lower eigenvalues and eigenfunctions towards that of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian (up to a convenient unitary transform). We also prove the convergence of the free energy when the system is sufficiently trapped. Our results are valid in an abstract setting, our main assumptions being that the Hartree ground state is unique and non-degenerate, and that there is complete Bose-Einstein condensation on this state. Using our method we then treat two applications: atoms with ''bosonic'' electrons on one hand, and trapped 2D and 3D Coulomb gases on the other hand.

Local exclusion principle for identical particles obeying intermediate and fractional statistics

A local exclusion principle is observed for identical particles obeying intermediate/fractional exchange statistics in one and two dimensions, leading to bounds for the kinetic energy in terms of the density. This has implications for models of Lieb-Liniger and Calogero-Sutherland type, and implies a non-trivial lower bound for the energy of the anyon gas whenever the statistics parameter is an odd numerator fraction. We discuss whether this is actually a necessary requirement.

Existence of Travelling Wave Solutions to the Maxwell-Pauli and Maxwell-Schrödinger Systems

We study two mathematical descriptions of a charged particle interacting with it's self-generated electromagnetic field. The first model is the one-body Maxwell-Schrödinger system where the interaction of the spin with the magnetic field is neglected and the second model is the related one-body Maxwell-Pauli system where the spin-field interaction is included. We prove that there exist travelling wave solutions to both of these systems provided that the speed $|v|$ of the wave is not too large. Moreover, we observe that the energies of these solutions behave like $\frac{mv^2}{2}$ for small velocities of the particle, which may be interpreted as saying that the effective mass of the particle is the same as it's bare mass.
