Joint Communications and Sensing for 6G Satellite Networks: Use Cases and Challenges

Satellite networks (SN) have long provided two fundamental services: global communications and Earth-oriented sensing, supporting applications from connectivity and navigation to disaster management and environmental monitoring. Yet, the accelerating demand for data and the emergence of new applications render the independent evolution of communication and sensing payloads increasingly unsustainable. Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) has emerged as a transformative paradigm, integrating both functions within a unified payload to enhance spectral efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize hardware redundancy. Beyond efficiency, this integration creates opportunities for novel services that are infeasible under separate payload designs. This paper motivates the role of JCAS in shaping the sixth-generation (6G) of satellite networks, explores a representative use case to assess its feasibility, and discusses key challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full potential. By highlighting these opportunities inherent to the space environment, we aim to stimulate the development of JCAS as a cornerstone technology for the next-generation space era

Architecture Proposal for 6G Systems Integrating Sensing and Communication

Integrating sensing functionality into 6G communication networks requires some changes to existing components as well as new entities processing the radar sensing signals received by the communication antennas. This whitepaper provides a comprehensive overview of the 6G design proposal for ISaC (Integrated Sensing and Communication). The whitepaper has been created by the architecture group of the KOMSENS-6G project with the intend to serve as a basis for further discussions and alignment across innovative 6G projects.

Energy Efficiency of Opportunistic Device-to-Device Relaying Under Lognormal Shadowing

Energy consumption is a major limitation of low power and mobile devices. Efficient transmission protocols are required to minimize an energy consumption of the mobile devices for ubiquitous connectivity in the next generation wireless networks. Opportunistic schemes select a single relay using the criteria of the best channel and achieve a near-optimal diversity performance in a cooperative wireless system. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency of the opportunistic schemes for device-to-device communication. In the opportunistic approach, an energy consumed by devices is minimized by selecting a single neighboring device as a relay using the criteria of minimum consumed energy in each transmission in the uplink of a wireless network. We derive analytical bounds and scaling laws on the expected energy consumption when the devices experience log-normal shadowing with respect to a base station considering both the transmission as well as circuit energy consumptions. We show that the protocol improves the energy efficiency of the network comparing to the direct transmission even if only a few devices are considered for relaying. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of the protocol by means of simulations in realistic scenarios of the wireless network.
