SUSY in the Sky with Gravitons

Picture yourself in the wave zone of a gravitational scattering event of two massive, spinning compact bodies (black holes, neutron stars or stars). We show that this system of genuine astrophysical interest enjoys a hidden $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, at least to the order of spin-squared (quadrupole) interactions in arbitrary $D$ spacetime dimensions. Using the ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric worldline action, augmented by finite-size corrections for the non-Kerr black hole case, we build a quadratic-in-spin extension to the worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism introduced in our previous work, and calculate the two bodies' deflection and spin kick to sub-leading order in the post-Minkowskian expansion in Newton's constant $G$. For spins aligned to the normal vector of the scattering plane we also obtain the scattering angle. All $D$-dimensional observables are derived from an eikonal phase given as the free energy of the WQFT, that is invariant under the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry transformations.

Double Field Theory as the Double Copy of Yang-Mills

We show that double field theory arises from the color-kinematic double copy of Yang-Mills theory. A precise double copy prescription for the Yang-Mills action at quadratic and cubic order is provided that yields the double field theory action in which the duality invariant dilaton has been integrated out. More precisely, at quadratic order this yields the gauge invariant double field theory, while at cubic order it yields the cubic double field theory action subject to a gauge condition that originates from Siegel gauge in string field theory.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung and Hidden Supersymmetry of Spinning Bodies

The recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory, which describes the classical scattering of massive bodies in Einstein gravity, is generalized up to quadratic order in spin -- for a pair of Kerr black holes revealing a hidden ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. The far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in such a spinning encounter is computed at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion, and exhibits this supersymmetry. From the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum in a generic reference frame, and the total radiated energy in the center-of-mass frame to leading order in a low-velocity approximation.

Classical Double Copy of Worldline Quantum Field Theory

The recently developed worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) formalism for the classical gravitational scattering of massive bodies is extended to massive, charged point particles coupling to bi-adjoint scalar field theory, Yang-Mills theory, and dilaton-gravity. We establish a classical double copy relation in these WQFTs for classical observables (deflection, radiation). The bi-adjoint scalar field theory fixes the locality structure of the double copy from Yang-Mills to dilaton-gravity. Using this the eikonal scattering phase (or free energy of the WQFT) is computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) in coupling constants using the double copy as well as directly finding full agreement. We clarify the relation of our approach to previous studies in the effective field theory formalism. Finally, the equivalence of the WQFT double copy to the double copy relation of the classical limit of quantum scattering amplitudes is shown explicitly up to NLO.

Classical Gravitational Bremsstrahlung from a Worldline Quantum Field Theory

Using the recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory (WQFT) description of the classical scattering of two spinless black holes, we compute the far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in the encounter at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion. We reproduce previous results of Kovacs and Thorne in a highly economic way. Then using the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum and energy (including differential results). Our work may enable crucial improvements of gravitational-wave predictions in the regime of large relative velocities.

Two-Point Correlator of Chiral Primary Operators with a Wilson Line Defect in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM

We study the two-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM in the presence of a line defect. To be more precise, we focus on the single-trace operator of conformal dimension two that sits in the $20'$ irrep of the $\mathfrak{so}(6)_\text{R}$ R-symmetry, and add a Maldacena-Wilson line to the configuration which makes the two-point function non-trivial. We use a combination of perturbation theory and defect CFT techniques to obtain results up to next-to-leading order in the coupling constant. Being a defect CFT correlator, there exist two (super)conformal block expansions which capture defect and bulk data respectively. We present a closed-form formula for the defect CFT data, which allows to write an efficient Taylor series for the correlator in the limit when one of the operators is close to the line. The bulk channel is technically harder and closed-form formulae are particularly challenging to obtain, nevertheless we use our analysis to check against well-known data of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. In particular, we recover the correct anomalous dimensions of a famous tower of twist-two operators (which includes the Konishi multiplet), and successfully compare the one-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet with results obtained using matrix-model techniques.

Three-Body Effective Potential in General Relativity at Second Post-Minkowskian Order and Resulting Post-Newtonian Contributions

We study the Post-Minkowskian (PM) and Post-Newtonian (PN) expansions of the gravitational three-body effective potential. At order 2PM a formal result is given in terms of a differential operator acting on the maximal generalized cut of the one-loop triangle integral. We compute the integral in all kinematic regions and show that the leading terms in the PN expansion are reproduced. We then perform the PN expansion unambiguously at the level of the integrand. Finding agreement with the 2PN three-body potential after integration, we explicitly present new $G^2v^4$-contributions at order 3PN and outline the generalization to $G^2v^{2n}$. The integrals that represent the essential input for these results are obtained by applying the recent Yangian bootstrap directly to their $ε$-expansion around three dimensions. The coordinate space Yangian generator that we employ to obtain these integrals can be understood as a special conformal symmetry in a dual momentum space.

Classical black hole scattering from a worldline quantum field theory

A precise link is derived between scalar-graviton S-matrix elements and expectation values of operators in a worldline quantum field theory (WQFT), both used to describe classical scattering of a pair of black holes. The link is formally provided by a worldline path integral representation of the graviton-dressed scalar propagator, which may be inserted into a traditional definition of the S-matrix in terms of time-ordered correlators. To calculate expectation values in the WQFT a new set of Feynman rules is introduced which treats the gravitational field $h_{μν}(x)$ and position $x_i^μ(τ_i)$ of each black hole on equal footing. Using these both the next-order classical gravitational radiation $\langle h^{μν}(k)\rangle$ (previously unknown) and deflection $Δp_i^μ$ from a binary black hole scattering event are obtained. The latter can also be obtained from the eikonal phase of a $2\to2$ scalar S-matrix, which we show to correspond to the free energy of the WQFT.

N=4 super Yang-Mills correlators without anti-commuting variables

Quantum correlators of pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in D=3,4,6 and 10 dimensions can be reformulated via the non-linear and non-local transformation (`Nicolai map') that maps the full functional measure of the interacting theory to that of a free bosonic theory. As a special application we show that for the maximally extended N=4 theory in four dimensions, and up to order O(g^2), all known results for scalar correlators can be recovered in this way without any use of anti-commuting variables, in terms of a purely bosonic and ghost free functional measure for the gauge fields. This includes in particular the dilatation operator yielding the anomalous dimensions of composite operators. The formalism is thus competitive with more standard perturbative techniques.

The Double Copy of Massive Scalar-QCD

We construct the gravitational theory emerging from the double-copy of massive scalar quantum chromodynamics in general dimensions. The resulting two-form-dilaton-gravity theory couples to flavored massive scalars gravitationally and via the dilaton. It displays scalar self-interaction terms of arbitrary even order in the fields but quadratic in derivatives. We work out the emerging Lagrangian explicitly up to the sixth order in scalar fields and propose an all order form.

Positive helicity Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes from the Double Copy

All positive helicity four-point gluon-graviton amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory coupled to a dilaton and axion field are computed at the leading one-loop order using colour-kinematics duality. In particular, all relevant contributions in the gravitational and gauge coupling are established. This extends a previous generalized unitarity based computation beyond the leading terms in the gravitational coupling $κ$. The resulting purely rational expressions take very compact forms. The previously seen vanishing of the single-graviton-three-gluon amplitude at leading order in $κ$ is seen to be lifted at order $κ^{3}$.

Effective action of dilaton gravity as the classical double copy of Yang-Mills theory

We compute the classical effective action of color charges moving along worldlines by integrating out the Yang-Mills gauge field to next-to-leading order in the coupling. An adapted version of the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) double-copy construction known from quantum scattering amplitudes is then applied to the Feynman integrands, yielding the prediction for the classical effective action of point masses in dilaton gravity. We check the validity of the result by independently constructing the effective action in dilaton gravity employing field redefinitions and gauge choices that greatly simplify the perturbative construction. Complete agreement is found at next-to-leading order. Finally, upon performing the post-Newtonian expansion of our result, we find agreement with the corresponding action of scalar-tensor theories known from the literature. Our results represent a proof of concept for the classical double-copy construction of the gravitational effective action and provides another application of a BCJ-like double copy beyond scattering amplitudes.

Consistent Conformal Extensions of the Standard Model

The question of whether classically conformal modifications of the standard model are consistent with experimental obervations has recently been subject to renewed interest. The method of Gildener and Weinberg provides a natural framework for the study of the effective potential of the resulting multi-scalar standard model extensions. This approach relies on the assumption of the ordinary loop hierarchy $λ_\text{s} \sim g^2_\text{g}$ of scalar and gauge couplings. On the other hand, Andreassen, Frost and Schwartz recently argued that in the (single-scalar) standard model, gauge invariant results require the consistent scaling $λ_\text{s} \sim g^4_\text{g}$. In the present paper we contrast these two hierarchy assumptions and illustrate the differences in the phenomenological predictions of minimal conformal extensions of the standard model.

New relations for graviton-matter amplitudes

We present new relations for scattering amplitudes of color ordered gluons, massive quarks and scalars minimally coupled to gravity. Tree-level amplitudes of arbitrary matter and gluon multiplicities involving one graviton are reduced to partial amplitudes in QCD or scalar QCD. The obtained relations are a direct generalization of the recently found Einstein-Yang-Mills relations. The proof of the new relation employs a simple diagrammatic argument trading the graviton-matter couplings to an `upgrade' of a gluon coupling with a color-kinematic replacement rule enforced. The use of the Melia-Johansson-Ochirov color basis is a key element of the reduction. We comment on the generalization to multiple gravitons in the single color trace case.

All rational one-loop Einstein-Yang-Mills amplitudes at four points

All four-point mixed gluon-graviton amplitudes in pure Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with at most one state of negative helicity are computed at one-loop order and maximal powers of the gauge coupling using D-dimensional generalized unitarity. The resulting purely rational expressions take very compact forms. We comment on the color-kinematics duality picture and a relation to collinear limits of pure gluon amplitudes.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry in Tree-Level Graviton Scattering

We argue that the scattering of gravitons in ordinary Einstein gravity possesses a hidden conformal symmetry at tree level in any number of dimensions. The presence of this conformal symmetry is indicated by the dilaton soft theorem in string theory, and it is reminiscent of the conformal invariance of gluon tree-level amplitudes in four dimensions. To motivate the underlying prescription, we demonstrate that formulating the conformal symmetry of gluon amplitudes in terms of momenta and polarization vectors requires manifest reversal and cyclic symmetry. Similarly, our formulation of the conformal symmetry of graviton amplitudes relies on a manifestly permutation symmetric form of the amplitude function.
