Ferroelectric $p$-wave magnets

Couplings between ferroelectric and magnetic orders offer promising routes toward low-dissipation electronics. However, such couplings are notably rare, largely due to the poor compatibility between insulating band structures and ferromagnetism. Here, we study a different strategy: we identify previously overlooked time-reversal-symmetric $p$- and $f$-wave spin-polarized insulating electronic states in ferroelectrics with noncollinear magnetic sublattices. We show that combining spin and magnetic group theory enables a systematic classification of the origin of polar symmetry breaking. We distinguish crystallographic, exchange-, or spin-orbit-driven mechanisms. Furthermore, we identify more than 50 candidate materials. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate a pristine, time-reversal-symmetric $p$-wave spin-polarized electronic structure in the well-known multiferroic $\mathrm{GdMn_2O_5}$. We further show that its $p$-wave order can be switched electrically, opening alternative paths toward spintronic and multiferroic functionalities in this class of materials.

Persistent altermagnetism

Persistent spin textures with collinear spin polarization are promising platforms for spintronics applications. However, their typically relativistic spin-orbit origin leads to weak spin splittings and fragile spin coherence. Here, we demonstrate a previously overlooked class of robust collinear spin polarization protected by mirror symmetry in combination with a strong exchange-driven altermagnetic order, which persists even in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. By combining first-principles calculations with a systematic classification of spin and magnetic layer groups, we identify this phenomenon-termed persistent altermagnetic spin polarization (PASP)-to occur in 158 spin layer groups and in representative materials including metallic V$_2$Te$_2$O, insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, and semiconducting VSI$_2$. Furthermore, we theoretically demonstrate that PASP is ferroelectrically switchable in VSI$_2$. Finally, we show that this PASP switching can lead to large changes in spin-filtering conductance in a model all-altermagnetic junction. Our results open the possibility of employing PASP in all-altermagnetic magnetic memory and spin-transistor devices and establish universal principles of altermagnetism in spin-orbit-coupled monolayers.

Microscopic origin of $p$-wave magnetism

$P$-, $f$-, or $h$-wave antialtermagnets yield large non-relativistic spin splitting with out-of-plane spin polarization in momentum space perpendicular to the coplanar non-collinear local magnetic moments. We provide a microscopic explanation of this unconventional spin polarization by linking it to a previously overlooked site-compensated spin density that orders antiparallel when projected onto opposite momenta. We verify this result both by model derivation of the out-of-plane momentum-space spin polarization being proportional to the direct-space cross product of the coplanar non-collinear spin order, as well as by ab initio calculations in the material candidate CeNiAsO. By providing a general classification and analytic expression for the spin polarization of all spinful two-site tight-binding Hamiltonians, we reveal the momentum-resolved spin polarization as a probe of the Bloch-state geometry arising from spin-site coupling. Furthermore, our approach allows for geometric distinction between ferro-, alter-, and antialtermagnets. Our results provide a quantitative guidance for quantized out-of-plane momentum-space spin polarization and large spin splitting, and construction principles for antialtermagnets.

Topological textures and emergent altermagnetic signatures in ultrathin BiFeO3

Magnetoelectric multiferroics, materials with intrinsically coupled electric polarization and magnetic order, promise ultralow-power switching, nonvolatile memory, and energy-efficient signal transduction. Yet practical deployment demands ultrathin films down to the atomic limit, where both orders typically degrade. Maintaining both order parameters at the thinnest scales in complex oxides remains a tremendous challenge, as uncompensated bound charge drives nanoscale depolarization in most ferroelectrics, while off-stoichiometry, reduced anisotropy, and charge transfer can produce magnetic dead layers in ultrathin oxides at substrate interfaces. Here, we realize a multiferroic phase of BiFeO3 that not only sustains both order parameters at room temperature with no dead layer but also exhibits signatures of emergent altermagnetism in the four-unit-cell, ultrathin limit. First-principles calculations, spin symmetry analysis, atomic-resolution imaging, and angle-resolved magnetic imaging reveal that short-circuit electrostatic boundary conditions, together with epitaxial strain, drive a continuous second-order, thickness-driven phase transition that enables the formation of multiferroic topological textures. Moreover, the imposed boundary conditions stabilize a d-wave altermagnetic time-reversal symmetry breaking, with corresponding signatures observed in magnetic circular dichroism. Collectively, these results establish a pathway to stabilize unconventional multiferroicity at device-relevant thicknesses, reframing scaling limits for oxide electronics.

Orbital magnetization from parallel transport of Bloch states

Quantum geometric formulations of linear and nonlinear responses can be constructed from a single building block in the form of a gauge-invariant interband transition operator. Here, we identify a second building block for quantum geometry: a band-resolved adiabatic connection operator that captures the noncommutativity between band projectors and their momentum derivatives. The band-resolved adiabatic connection operator, first introduced in the theory of adiabatic driving, serves as a generalized angular momentum within the state manifold of single bands, and we employ it to reformulate expressions for the band-resolved orbital magnetic moment. This form provides a complementary geometric interpretation alongside the multiband separation between energetic- and quantum-state properties by the two-state Berry curvature. Our formalism allows us to present formulas valid for both nondegenerate and degenerate bands, thereby removing the limitations of the common Bloch-state formula. We illustrate our theory by calculating a large orbital magnetization emerging without spin-orbit coupling in a spin-compensated, noncoplanar anomalous Hall magnet with degenerate bands.

Quantization of spin circular photogalvanic effect in altermagnetic Weyl semimetals

We theoretically predict a spin-current analog of the quantized circular photogalvanic effect in Weyl semimetals. This phenomenon is forbidden in antiferromagnets by symmetry but uniquely allowed in altermagnets, highlighting a novel and intrinsic characteristic of altermagnetism. To systematically explore second-order spin current responses, we classify all symmetry-allowed responses based on spin point groups. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive classification of altermagnetic Weyl semimetals by identifying spin space groups that host symmetry-enforced Weyl points. Utilizing this classification, we construct a symmetry-guided tight-binding model and confirm our predictions. Finally, we identify Weyl crossings in a material candidate via first-principle calculations. Our work unveils a distinctive optical response of altermagnets, paving the way for a new frontier in altermagnetism.

Effect of interface on magnetic exchange coupling in Co/Ru/Co trilayer: from ab-initio simulations to micromagnetics

Interfaces play a substantial role for the functional properties of structured magnetic materials and magnetic multilayers. Modeling the functional behavior of magnetic materials requires the treatment of the relevant phenomena at the device level. Properties predicted from the electronic structure and spin dynamics at the atomistic level have to be properly transferred into a continuum level treatment. In this work we show how Co/Ru/Co three layers can be simulated with the continuum theory of micromagnetism, with interface coupling energies and bulk intrinsic properties properly derived from the results of \emph{ab initio} and spin dynamics simulations at different temperatures.

OstravaJ: a tool for calculating magnetic exchange interactions via DFT

OstravaJ is a Python package for high-throughput calculation of exchange interaction terms in the Heisenberg model for magnetic materials. It uses the total energy difference method, where calculations are based on the total energy of the system in different magnetic configurations, calculated by means of density functional theory. OstravaJ can propose a suitable set of magnetic configurations, generate VASP configuration files in cooperation with the user, and read VASP calculation results, which minimizes necessary human interaction. It can also calculate other relevant properties (e. g. MFA and RPA critical temperature, spin-wave stiffness) and provide input for various atomistic spin dynamics codes. We present results for a number of materials from various classes (metals, transition metal oxides), compared to other methods. They show that the total energy difference method is a useful method for exchange interaction calculation from first principles.
