Generalization of catability for parity-less cat states

We extend the nullifier-based certification framework of catability from parity-defined coherent cat states to parity-less Kerr cat states. Since Kerr cats cannot be distinguished by parity alone, we replace the parity component of the original nullifier with a displaced-parity operator that captures their characteristic interference structure. The resulting generalized catability remains directly observable and can be evaluated from a finite number of photon-number measurements without full state tomography. Numerical benchmarks show that the method faithfully certifies Kerr-cat features, produces accurate approximations of ideal Kerr cat states, and is more resilient to optical loss than fidelity-based certification. We also identify an exact anti-linear nullifier based on complex conjugation, providing an ideal algebraic description of Kerr cat states. Our results broaden the scope of catability and provide an experimentally practical approach to the characterization of Kerr cat states.

On the existence of fully inseparable biseparable Gaussian states

Genuine multipartite entanglement and full inseparability are two inequivalent quantum resources. Even though all genuinely multipartite entangled states are also fully inseparable, not all fully inseparable states are genuinely multipartite entangled. There exist fully inseparable states that can be prepared as convex mixtures of states separable with respect to different bipartite splits. Here, we are interested in examples of Gaussian states that possess this type of entanglement, so-called fully inseparable biseparable states. We show for several archetypical families of multimode Gaussian states that fully inseparable biseparable candidate states are actually genuinely multipartite entangled. Using projections to finite-dimensional subspaces and fully decomposable witnesses, we observe a shrinking of the regions of potentially fully inseparable biseparable Gaussian states with growing dimension of the projection subspaces. We therefore conjecture that all fully inseparable Gaussian states are genuinely multipartite entangled.

Catability as a metric for evaluating superposed coherent states

Superposed coherent states are central to quantum technologies, yet their reliable identification remains a challenge, especially in noisy or resource-constrained settings. We introduce a novel, directly measurable criterion for detecting cat-like features in quantum states, rooted in the concept of nonlinear squeezing. This approach bypasses the need for full state tomography and reveals structure where fidelity fails. The numerical results confirm its robustness under loss and its potential for experimental implementation. The method naturally generalizes to more exotic superpositions, including multiheaded cat states.

Witnesses of non-Gaussian features as lower bounds of stellar rank

Quantum non-Gaussian states and operations serve as fundamental resources for universal quantum computation, error correction, and high-precision metrology, extending beyond the Gaussian limits. While the stellar rank provides a rigorous hierarchical measure of non-Gaussianity, it remains challenging to determine experimentally. Conversely, witnesses of non-Gaussian features, based on the expectation values and variances of measurable observables, offer an accessible method for certifying non-Gaussian behavior but lack a direct connection to stellar rank. In this work, we establish a quantitative connection between these witnesses and stellar rank, demonstrating that the former can provide certifiable lower bounds on stellar rank. We introduce normalized expectation value and variance-based quantifiers and show that these witnesses form a consistent hierarchy of thresholds corresponding to stellar rank. Our results bridge the gap between abstract hierarchical measures and experimentally accessible quantifiers, enabling scalable certification of non-Gaussian states.

Optical states with higher stellar rank

Quantum non-Gaussian states of traveling light fields are crucial components of quantum information processing protocols; however, their preparation is experimentally challenging. In this paper, we discuss the minimal requirements imposed on the quantum efficiency of photon number resolving detectors and the quality of the squeezing operation in an experimental realization of certifiable quantum non-Gaussian states of individual photonic states with three, four, and five photons.

Adapting coherent-state superpositions in noisy channels

Quantum non-Gaussian states are crucial for the fundamental understanding of non-linear bosonic systems and simultaneously advanced applications in quantum technologies. In many bosonic experiments the important quantum non-Gaussian feature is the negativity of the Wigner function, a cornerstone for quantum computation with bosons. Unfortunately, the negativities present in complex quantum states are extremely vulnerable to the effects of decoherence, such as energy loss, noise and dephasing, caused by the coupling to the environment, which is an unavoidable part of any experimental implementation. An efficient way to mitigate its effects is by adapting quantum states into more resilient forms. We propose an optimal protection of superpositions of coherent states against a sequence of asymmetric thermal lossy channels by suitable squeezing operations.

Taming numerical errors in simulations of continuous variable non-Gaussian state preparation

Numerical simulation of continuous variable quantum state preparation is a necessary tool for optimization of existing quantum information processing protocols. A powerful instrument for such simulation is the numerical computation in the Fock state representation. It unavoidably uses an approximation of the infinite-dimensional Fock space by finite complex vector spaces implementable with classical digital computers. In this approximation we analyze the accuracy of several currently available methods for computation of the truncated coherent displacement operator. To overcome their limitations we propose an alternative with improved accuracy based on the standard matrix exponential. We then employ the method in analysis of non-Gaussian state preparation scheme based on coherent displacement of a two mode squeezed vacuum with subsequent photon counting measurement. We compare different detection mechanisms, including avalanche photodiodes, their cascades, and photon number resolving detectors in the context of engineering non-linearly squeezed cubic states and construction of qubit-like superpositions between vacuum and single photon states.

Convicting emergent multipartite entanglement with evidence from a partially blind witness

Genuine multipartite entanglement underlies correlation experiments corroborating quantum mechanics and it is an expedient empowering many quantum technologies. One of many counterintuitive facets of genuine multipartite entanglement is its ability to exhibit an emergent character, that is, one can infer its presence in some multipartite states merely from a set of its separable marginals. Here, we show that the effect can be found also in the context of Gaussian states of bosonic systems. Specifically, we construct examples of multimode Gaussian states carrying genuine multipartite entanglement which can be verified solely from separable nearest-neighbour two-mode marginals. The key tool of our construction is a genuine multipartite entanglement witness acting only on some two-mode reductions of the global covariance matrix, which we find by a numerical solution of a semi-definite programme. We also propose an experimental scheme for preparation of the simplest three-mode state, which requires interference of three correlatively displaced squeezed beams on two beam splitters. Besides revealing the concept of emergent genuine multipartite entanglement in the Gaussian scenario and bringing it closer to experimentally testable form, our results pave the way to effective diagnostics methods of global properties of multipartite states without complete tomography.

Verifying genuine multipartite entanglement of the whole from its separable parts

We prove experimentally the predicted existence of a three-qubit quantum state with genuine multipartite entanglement which can be certified solely from its separable two-qubit reduced density matrices. The qubits are encoded into different degrees of freedom of a pair of correlated photons and the state is prepared by letting the photons to propagate through a linear optical circuit. The presence of genuine multipartite entanglement is verified by finding numerically a fully decomposable entanglement witness acting nontrivially only on the reductions of the global state. Our result confirms viability of detection of emerging global properties of composite quantum systems from their parts which lack the properties.

Benchmarking photon number resolving detectors

Photon number resolving detectors are the ultimate measurement of quantum optics, which is the reason why developing the technology is getting significant attention in recent years. With this arises the question of how to evaluate the performance of the detectors. We suggest that performance of a photon number detector can be evaluated by comparing it to a multiplex of on-off detectors in a practical scenario: conditional preparation of a photon number state. Here, both the quality of the prepared state and the probability of the preparation are limited by the number of on-off detectors in the multiplex, which allows us to set benchmarks that can be achieved or surpassed by the photon number resolving detectors.
