Effective normalization of sub-Riemannian connections

We give a new normalization condition for connections on sub-Riemannian manifolds with constant symbols. The condition is formulated in terms of Cartan connections and depends only on the first degree of homogeneity of the curvature. The essential part of our result is to show how a Cartan connection can be uniquely determined by a partial connection on the horizontal bundle. Viewed from the manifold, this observation is equivalent to the following claim: a compatible partial affine connection can be uniquely extended to both a full affine connection and a grading of the tangent bundle, and our normalization ensures that the holonomy of this connection will coincide with the horizontal holonomy, i.e., related to horizontal paths only. We give several examples in which we compute the canonical connections for a class of sub-Riemannian manifolds.

Bundles of Weyl structures and invariant calculus for parabolic geometries

For more than hundred years, various concepts were developed to understand the fields of geometric objects and invariant differential operators between them for conformal Riemannian and projective geometries. More recently, several general tools were presented for the entire class of parabolic geometries, i.e., the Cartan geometries modelled on homogeneous spaces $G/P$ with $P$ a parabolic subgroup in a semi-simple Lie group $G$. Similarly to conformal Riemannian and projective structures, all these geometries determine a class of distinguished affine connections, which carry an affine structure modelled on differential 1-forms $\Upsilon$. They correspond to reductions of $P$ to its reductive Levi factor, and they are called the Weyl structures similarly to the conformal case. The standard definition of differential invariants in this setting is as affine invariants of these connections, which do not depend on the choice within the class. In this article, we describe a universal calculus which provides an important first step to determine such invariants. We present a natural procedure how to construct all affine invariants of Weyl connections, which depend only tensorially on the deformations $\Upsilon$.

Geodesic Fiber Tracking in White Matter using Activation Function

The geodesic ray-tracing method has shown its effectiveness for the reconstruction of fibers in white matter structure. Based on reasonable metrics on the spaces of the diffusion tensors, it can provide multiple solutions and get robust to noise and curvatures of fibers. The choice of the metric on the spaces of diffusion tensors has a significant impact on the outcome of this method. Our objective is to suggest metrics and modifications of the algorithms leading to more satisfactory results in the construction of white matter tracts as geodesics. Starting with the DTI modality, we propose to rescale the initially chosen metric on the space of diffusion tensors to increase the geodetic cost in the isotropic regions. This change should be conformal in order to preserve the angles between crossing fibers. We also suggest enhancing the methods to be more robust to noise and employing the fourth-order tensor data in order to handle the fiber crossings properly.

Non-holonomic equations for the normal extremals in geometric control theory

We provide a new and simple system of equations for the normal sub-Riemannian geodesics. These use a partial connection that we show is canonically available, given a choice of complement to the distribution. We also describe conditions which, if satisfied, mean that even this choice of complement is determined canonically, and that this determines a distinguished connection on the tangent bundle. Our approach applies to sub-Riemannian geometry the point of view of non-holonomic mechanics. The geodesic equations obtained split into mutually driving horizontal and complementary parts, and the method allows for particular choices of nice coframes. We illustrate this feature on examples of contact models with non-constant symbols.

Subriemannian metrics and the metrizability of parabolic geometries

We present the linearized metrizability problem in the context of parabolic geometries and subriemannian geometry, generalizing the metrizability problem in projective geometry studied by R. Liouville in 1889. We give a general method for linearizability and a classification of all cases with irreducible defining distribution where this method applies. These tools lead to natural subriemannian metrics on generic distributions of interest in geometric control theory.

Calculus on symplectic manifolds

On a symplectic manifold, there is a natural elliptic complex replacing the de Rham complex. It can be coupled to a vector bundle with connection and, when the curvature of this connection is constrained to be a multiple of the symplectic form, we find a new complex. In particular, on complex projective space with its Fubini-Study form and connection, we can build a series of differential complexes akin to the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand complexes from parabolic differential geometry.

Conformally Fedosov manifolds

We introduce the notion of a conformally Fedosov structure and construct an associated Cartan connection. When an appropriate curvature vanishes, this allows us to construct a family of natural differential complexes akin to the BGG complexes from parabolic geometry.

Free CR distributions

There are only some exceptional CR dimensions and codimensions such that the geometries enjoy a discrete classification of the pointwise types of the homogeneous models. The cases of CR dimensions $n$ and codimensions $n^2$ are among the very few possibilities of the so called parabolic geometries. Indeed, the homogeneous model turns out to be $\PSU(n+1,n)/P$ with a suitable parabolic subgroup $P$. We study the geometric properties of such real $(2n+n^2)$-dimensional submanifolds in $\mathbb C^{n+n^2}$ for all $n>1$. In particular we show that the fundamental invariant is of torsion type, we provide its explicit computation, and we discuss an analogy to the Fefferman construction of a circle bundle in the hypersurface type CR geometry.

Inclusions between parabolic geometries

Some of the well known Fefferman like constructions of parabolic geometries end up with a new structure on the same manifold. In this paper, we classify all such cases with the help of the classical Onishchik's lists \cite{onish1} and we treat in detail the only new series of inclusions providing the spinorial structures on the manifolds with generic free distributions. Our technique relies on the cohomological understanding of the canonical normal Cartan connections for parabolic geometries and the classical computations with exterior forms. Apart of the complete discussion of the distributions from the geometrical point of view and the new functorial construction of the inclusion into the spinorial geometry, we also discuss the normality problem of the resulting spinorial connections. In particular, there is a non--trivial subclass of distributions providing normal spinorial connections directly by the construction.

Generalized planar curves and quaternionic geometry

Motivated by the analogies between the projective and the almost quaternionic geometries, we study the generalized planar curves and mappings. We follow, recover, and extend the classical approach as developed by Mikes and Sinyukov. Then we exploit the impact of the general results in the almost quaternionic geometry. In particular we show, that the natural class of H--planar curves coincides with the class of all geodesics of the so called Weyl connections and preserving this class turns out to be the necessary and sufficient condition on diffeomorphisms to become morphisms of almost quaternionic geometries.

Preferred Parameterisations on Homogeneous Curves

We show how to specify preferred parameterisations on a homogeneous curve in an arbitrary homogeneous space. We apply these results to limit the natural parameters on distinguished curves in parabolic geometries.

On Distinguished Curves in Parabolic Geometries

All parabolic geometries, i.e. Cartan geometries with homogeneous model a real generalized flag manifold, admit highly interesting classes of distinguished curves. The geodesics of a projective class of connections on a manifold, conformal circles on conformal Riemannian manifolds, and Chern--Moser chains on CR--manifolds of hypersurface type are typical examples. We show that such distinguished curves are always determined by a finite jet in one point, and study the properties of such jets. We also discuss the question when distinguished curves agree up to reparametrization and discuss the distinguished parametrizations in this case. We give a complete description of all distinguished curves for some examples of parabolic geometries.

Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand sequences

This paper is devoted to the study of geometric structures modeled on homogeneous spaces G/P, where G is a real or complex semisimple Lie group and $P\subset G$ is a parabolic subgroup. We use methods from differential geometry and very elementary finite-dimensional representation theory to construct sequences of invariant differential operators for such geometries, both in the smooth and the holomorphic category. For G simple, these sequences specialize on the homogeneous model G/P to the celebrated (generalized) Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions in the holomorphic category, while in the smooth category we get smooth analogs of these resolutions. In the case of geometries locally isomorphic to the homogeneous model, we still get resolutions, whose cohomology is explicitly related to a twisted de Rham cohomology. In the general (curved) case we get distinguished curved analogs of all the invariant differential operators occurring in Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand resolutions (and their smooth analogs). On the way to these results, a significant part of the general theory of geometrical structures of the type described above is presented here for the first time.

Weyl structures for parabolic geometries

Motivated by the rich geometry of conformal Riemannian manifolds and by the recent development of geometries modeled on homogeneous spaces $G/P$ with $G$ semisimple and $P$ parabolic, Weyl structures and preferred connections are introduced in this general framework. In particular, we extend the notions of scales, closed and exact Weyl connections, and Rho--tensors, we characterize the classes of such objects, and we use the results to give a new description of the Cartan bundles and connections for all parabolic geometries.

The Geometry of Hyperbolic and Elliptic CR-manifolds of codimension two

The general theory of parabolic geometries is applied to the study of the normal Cartan connections for all hyperbolic and elliptic 6-dimensional CR-manifolds of codimension two. The geometric meaning of the individual components of the torsion is explained and the chains of dimensions one and two are discussed. This seems to be the first application of the general methods to a geometry with a non-connected and non-simple structure group.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, III. Standard operators

This paper demonstrates the power of the calculus developed in the two previous parts of the series for all real forms of the almost Hermitian symmetric structures on smooth manifolds, including e.g. conformal Riemannian and almost quaternionic geometries. Exploiting some finite dimensional representation theory of simple Lie algebras, we give explicit formulae for distinguished invariant curved analogues of the standard operators in terms of the linear connections belonging to the structures in question, so in particular we prove their existence. Moreover, we prove that these formulae for k-th order standard operators, k=1,2,..., are universal for all geometries in question.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, I. Invariant differentiation

This is the first part of a series of papers. The whole series aims to develop the tools for the study of all almost Hermitian symmetric structures in a unified way. In particular, methods for the construction of invariant operators, their classification and the study of their properties will be worked out. In this paper we present the invariant differentiation with respect to a Cartan connection and we expand the differentials in the terms of the underlying linear connections belonging to the structures in question. Then we discuss the holonomic and non-holonomic jet extensions and we suggest methods for the construction of invariant operators.

Invariant operators on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures, II. Normal Cartan connections

In the first part of this series of papers we developed the invariant differentiation with respect to a Cartan connection, we described this procedure in the terms of the underlying principal connections, and we discussed applications of this theory to the construction of natural operators. In this part we will extend the results of \cite{Ochiai, 70} on the existence and the uniqueness of the so called normal Cartan connections on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures to first order structures which do not admit a torsion free linear connection. Moreover, for each of these structures we obtain explicit (universal) formulae for these canonical connections in the terms of the curvatures of the underlying linear connections.
