On the parallel solution of hydro-mechanical problems with fracture networks and contact conditions

The paper presents a numerical method for simulating flow and mechanics in fractured rock. The governing equations that couple the effects in the rock mass and in the fractures are obtained using the discrete fracture-matrix approach. The fracture flow is driven by the cubic law, and the contact conditions prevent fractures from self-penetration. A stable finite element discretization is proposed for the displacement-pressure-flux formulation. The resulting nonlinear algebraic system of equations and inequalities is decoupled using a robust iterative splitting into the linearized flow subproblem, and the quadratic programming problem for the mechanical part. The non-penetration conditions are solved by means of dualization and an optimal quadratic programming algorithm. The capability of the numerical scheme is demonstrated on a benchmark problem for tunnel excavation with hundreds of fractures in 3D. The paper's novelty consists in a combination of three crucial ingredients: (i) application of discrete fracture-matrix approach to poroelasticity, (ii) robust iterative splitting of resulting nonlinear algebraic system working for real-world 3D problems, and (iii) efficient solution of its mechanical quadratic programming part with a large number of fractures in mutual contact by means of own solvers implemented into an in-house software library.

Stokes problem with a solution dependent slip bound: Stability of solutions with respect to domains

We study the Stokes problem in a bounded planar domain $Ω$ with a friction type boundary condition that switches between a slip and no-slip stage. Unlike our previous work [6], in the present paper the threshold value may depend on the velocity field. Besides the usual velocity-pressure formulation, we introduce an alternative formulation with three Lagrange multipliers which allows a more flexible treatment of the impermeability condition as well as optimum design problems with cost functions depending on the shear and/or normal stress. Our main goal is to determine under which conditions concerning smoothness of $Ω$, solutions to the Stokes system depend continuously on variations of $Ω$. Having this result at our disposal, we easily prove the existence of a solution to optimal shape design problems for a large class of cost functionals.

Shape sensitivity analysis of time-dependent flows of incompressible non-Newtonian fluids

We study the shape differentiability of a cost function for the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid of power-law type. The fluid is confined to a bounded planar domain surrounding an obstacle. For smooth perturbations of the shape of the obstacle we express the shape gradient of the cost function which can be subsequently used to improve the initial design.

Stability with respect to domain of the low Mach number limit of compressible viscous fluids

We study the asymptotic limit of solutions to the barotropic Navier-Stokes system, when the Mach number is proportional to a small parameter $\ep \to 0$ and the fluid is confined to an exterior spatial domain $Ω_\ep$ that may vary with $\ep$. As $ε\rightarrow 0$, it is shown that the fluid density becomes constant while the velocity converges to a solenoidal vector field satisfying the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a limit domain. The velocities approach the limit strongly (a.a.) on any compact set, uniformly with respect to a certain class of domains. The proof is based on spectral analysis of the associated wave propagator (Neumann Laplacian) governing the motion of acoustic waves.
