Compact generators of the contraderived category of contramodules

We consider the contraderived category of left contramodules over a right linear topological ring $\mathfrak R$ with a countable base of neighborhoods of zero. Equivalently, this is the homotopy category of unbounded complexes of projective left $\mathfrak R$-contramodules. Assuming that the abelian category of discrete right $\mathfrak R$-modules is locally coherent, we show that the contraderived category of left $\mathfrak R$-contramodules is compactly generated, and describe its full subcategory of compact objects as the opposite category to the bounded derived category of finitely presentable discrete right $\mathfrak R$-modules. Under the same assumptions, we also prove the flat and projective periodicity theorem for $\mathfrak R$-contramodules.

Linear Reedy categories, quasi-hereditary algebras and model structures

We study linear versions of Reedy categories in relation with finite dimensional algebras and abelian model structures. We prove that, for a linear Reedy category $\mathcal{C}$ over a field, the category of left $\mathcal{C}$--modules admits a highest weight structure, which in case $\mathcal{C}$ is finite corresponds to a quasi-hereditary algebra with an exact Borel subalgebra. We also lift complete cotorsion pairs and abelian model structures to certain categories of additive functors indexed by linear Reedy categories, generalizing analogous results from the hereditary case.

Contraderived categories of CDG-modules

For any CDG-ring $B^\bullet=(B^*,d,h)$, we show that the homotopy category of graded-projective (left) CDG-modules over $B^\bullet$ is equivalent to the quotient category of the homotopy category of graded-flat CDG-modules by its full triangulated subcategory of flat CDG-modules. The contraderived category (in the sense of Becker) $\mathsf D^{\mathsf{bctr}}(B^\bullet{-}\mathbf{Mod})$ is the common name for these two triangulated categories. We also prove that the classes of cotorsion and graded-cotorsion CDG-modules coincide, and the contraderived category of CDG-modules is equivalent to the homotopy category of graded-flat graded-cotorsion CDG-modules. Assuming the graded ring $B^*$ to be graded right coherent, we show that the contraderived category $\mathsf D^{\mathsf{bctr}}(B^\bullet{-}\mathbf{Mod})$ is compactly generated and its full subcategory of compact objects is anti-equivalent to the full subcategory of compact objects in the coderived category of right CDG-modules $\mathsf D^{\mathsf{bco}}(\mathbf{Mod}{-}B^\bullet)$. Specifically, the latter triangulated category is the idempotent completion of the absolute derived category of finitely presented right CDG-modules $\mathsf D^{\mathsf{abs}}(\mathbf{mod}{-}B^\bullet)$.

Topologically semiperfect topological rings

We define topologically semiperfect (complete, separated, right linear) topological rings and characterize them by equivalent conditions. We show that the endomorphism ring of a module, endowed with the finite topology, is topologically semiperfect if and only if the module is decomposable as an (infinite) direct sum of modules with local endomorphism rings. Then we study structural properties of topologically semiperfect topological rings and prove that their topological Jacobson radicals are strongly closed and the related topological quotient rings are topologically semisimple. For the endomorphism ring of a direct sum of modules with local endomorphism rings, the topological Jacobson radical is described explicitly as the set of all matrices of nonisomorphisms. Furthermore, we prove that, over a topologically semiperfect topological ring, all finitely generated discrete modules have projective covers in the category of modules, while all lattice-finite contramodules have projective covers in both the categories of modules and contramodules. We also show that the topological Jacobson radical of a topologically semiperfect topological ring is equal to the closure of the abstract Jacobson radical, and present a counterexample demonstrating that the topological Jacobson radical can be strictly larger than the abstract one. Finally, we discuss the problem of lifting idempotents modulo the topological Jacobson radical and the structure of projective contramodules for topologically semiperfect topological rings.

Flat quasi-coherent sheaves as directed colimits, and quasi-coherent cotorsion periodicity

We show that every flat quasi-coherent sheaf on a quasi-compact quasi-separated scheme is a directed colimit of locally countably presentable flat quasi-coherent sheaves. More generally, the same assertion holds for any countably quasi-compact, countably quasi-separated scheme. Moreover, for three categories of complexes of flat quasi-coherent sheaves, we show that all complexes in the category can be obtained as directed colimits of complexes of locally countably presentable flat quasi-coherent sheaves from the same category. In particular, on a quasi-compact semi-separated scheme, every flat quasi-coherent sheaf is a directed colimit of flat quasi-coherent sheaves of finite projective dimension. In the second part of the paper, we discuss cotorsion periodicity in category-theoretic context, generalizing an argument of Bazzoni, Cortes-Izurdiaga, and Estrada. As the main application, we deduce the assertion that any cotorsion-periodic quasi-coherent sheaf on a quasi-compact semi-separated scheme is cotorsion.

Coderived and contraderived categories of locally presentable abelian DG-categories

The concept of an abelian DG-category, introduced by the first-named author in arXiv:2110.08237, unites the notions of abelian categories and (curved) DG-modules in a common framework. In this paper we consider coderived and contraderived categories in the sense of Becker. Generalizing some constructions and results from the preceding papers by Becker arXiv:1205.4473 and by the present authors arXiv:2101.10797, we define the contraderived category of a locally presentable abelian DG-category $\mathbf B$ with enough projective objects and the coderived category of a Grothendieck abelian DG-category $\mathbf A$. We construct the related abelian model category structures and show that the resulting exotic derived categories are well-generated. Then we specialize to the case of a locally coherent Grothendieck abelian DG-category $\mathbf A$, and prove that its coderived category is compactly generated by the absolute derived category of finitely presentable objects of $\mathbf A$, thus generalizing a result from the second-named author's preprint arXiv:1412.1615. In particular, the homotopy category of graded-injective left DG-modules over a DG-ring with a left coherent underlying graded ring is compactly generated by the absolute derived category of DG-modules with finitely presentable underlying graded modules. We also describe compact generators of the coderived categories of quasi-coherent matrix factorizations over coherent schemes.

Topologically semisimple and topologically perfect topological rings

Extending the Wedderburn-Artin theory of (classically) semisimple associative rings to the realm of topological rings with right linear topology, we show that the abelian category of left contramodules over such a ring is split (equivalently, semisimple) if and only if the abelian category of discrete right modules over the same ring is split (equivalently, semisimple). Our results in this direction complement those of Iovanov-Mesyan-Reyes. An extension of the Bass theory of left perfect rings to the topological realm is formulated as a list of conjecturally equivalent conditions, many equivalences and implications between which we prove. In particular, all the conditions are equivalent for topological rings with a countable base of neighborhoods of zero and for topologically right coherent topological rings. Considering the rings of endomorphisms of modules as topological rings with the finite topology, we establish a close connection between the concept of a topologically perfect topological ring and the theory of modules with perfect decomposition. Our results also apply to endomorphism rings and direct sum decompositions of objects in certain additive categories more general than the categories of modules; we call them topologically agreeable categories. We show that any topologically agreeable split abelian category is Grothendieck and semisimple. We also prove that a module $Σ$-coperfect over its endomorphism ring has a perfect decomposition provided that either the endomorphism ring is commutative or the module is countably generated, partially answering a question of Angeleri Hugel and Saorin.

Projective covers of flat contramodules

We show that a direct limit of projective contramodules (over a right linear topological ring) is projective if it has a projective cover. A similar result is obtained for $\infty$-strictly flat contramodules of projective dimension not exceeding $1$, using an argument based on the notion of the topological Jacobson radical. Covers and precovers of direct limits of more general classes of objects, both in abelian categories with exact and with nonexact direct limits, are also discussed, with an eye towards the Enochs conjecture about covers and direct limits, using locally split (mono)morphisms as the main technique. In particular, we offer a simple elementary proof of the Enochs conjecture for the left class of an $n$-tilting cotorsion pair in an abelian category with exact direct limits.

Derived, coderived, and contraderived categories of locally presentable abelian categories

For a locally presentable abelian category $\mathsf B$ with a projective generator, we construct the projective derived and contraderived model structures on the category of complexes, proving in particular the existence of enough homotopy projective complexes of projective objects. We also show that the derived category $\mathsf D(\mathsf B)$ is generated, as a triangulated category with coproducts, by the projective generator of $\mathsf B$. For a Grothendieck abelian category $\mathsf A$, we construct the injective derived and coderived model structures on complexes. Assuming Vopenka's principle, we prove that the derived category $\mathsf D(\mathsf A)$ is generated, as a triangulated category with products, by the injective cogenerator of $\mathsf A$. More generally, we define the notion of an exact category with an object size function and prove that the derived category of any such exact category with exact $κ$-directed colimits of chains of admissible monomorphisms has Hom sets. In particular, the derived category of any locally presentable abelian category has Hom sets.

Infinity-tilting theory

We define the notion of an infinitely generated tilting object of infinite homological dimension in an abelian category. A one-to-one correspondence between $\infty$-tilting objects in complete, cocomplete abelian categories with an injective cogenerator and $\infty$-cotilting objects in complete, cocomplete abelian categories with a projective generator is constructed. We also introduce $\infty$-tilting pairs, consisting of an $\infty$-tilting object and its $\infty$-tilting class, and obtain a bijective correspondence between $\infty$-tilting and $\infty$-cotilting pairs. Finally, we discuss the related derived equivalences and t-structures.

On flat generators and Matlis duality for quasicoherent sheaves

We show that for a quasicompact quasiseparated scheme $X$, the following assertions are equivalent: (1) the category $\operatorname{QCoh}(X)$ of all quasicoherent sheaves on $X$ has a flat generator; (2) for every injective object $\mathcal E$ of $\operatorname{QCoh}(X)$, the internal hom functor into $\mathcal E$ is exact; (3) the scheme $X$ is semiseparated.

The tilting-cotilting correspondence

To a big n-tilting object in a complete, cocomplete abelian category A with an injective cogenerator we assign a big n-cotilting object in a complete, cocomplete abelian category B with a projective generator, and vice versa. Then we construct an equivalence between the (conventional or absolute) derived categories of A and B. Under various assumptions on A, which cover a wide range of examples (for instance, if A is a module category or, more generally, a locally finitely presentable Grothendieck abelian category), we show that B is the abelian category of contramodules over a topological ring and that the derived equivalences are realized by a contramodule-valued variant of the usual derived Hom-functor.

Flat ring epimorphisms and universal localisations of commutative rings

We study different types of localisations of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, we provide criteria to decide: (a) if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation in the sense of Cohn and Schofield; and (b) when such universal localisations are classical rings of fractions. In order to find such criteria, we use the theory of support and we analyse the specialisation closed subset associated to a flat ring epimorphism. In case the underlying ring is locally factorial or of Krull dimension one, we show that all flat ring epimorphisms are universal localisations. Moreover, it turns out that an answer to the question of when universal localisations are classical depends on the structure of the Picard group. We furthermore discuss the case of normal rings, for which the divisor class group plays an essential role to decide if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation. Finally, we explore several (counter)examples which highlight the necessity of our assumptions.

Exactness of direct limits for abelian categories with an injective cogenerator

We prove that the exactness of direct limits in an abelian category with products and an injective cogenerator J is equivalent to a condition on J which is well-known to characterize pure-injectivity in module categories, and we describe an application of this result to the tilting theory. We derive our result as a consequence of a more general characterization of when inverse limits in the Eilenberg-Moore category of a monad on the category of sets preserve regular epimorphisms.

A Kodaira Vanishing Theorem for Noncommutative Kahler Structures

Using the framework of noncommutative Kahler structures, we generalise to the noncommutative setting the celebrated vanishing theorem of Kodaira for positive line bundles. The result is established under the assumption that the associated Dirac-Dolbeault operator of the line bundle is diagonalisable, an assumption that is shown to always hold in the quantum homogeneous space case. The general theory is then applied to the covariant Kahler structure of the Heckenberger-Kolb calculus of the quantum Grassmannians allowing us to prove a direct q-deformation of the classical Grassmannian Bott-Borel-Weil theorem for positive line bundles.

Universal localisations via silting

We show that silting modules are closely related with localisations of rings. More precisely, every partial silting module gives rise to a localisation at a set of maps between countably generated projective modules and, conversely, every universal localisation, in the sense of Cohn and Schofield, arises in this way. To establish these results, we further explore the finite-type classification of tilting classes and we use the morphism category to translate silting modules into tilting objects. In particular, we prove that silting modules are of finite type.

Torsion classes, wide subcategories and localisations

For a finite dimensional algebra $A$, we establish correspondences between torsion classes and wide subcategories in $mod(A)$. In case $A$ is representation finite, we obtain an explicit bijection between these two classes of subcategories. Moreover, we translate our results to the language of ring epimorphisms and universal localisations. It turns out that universal localisations over representation finite algebras are classified by torsion classes and support $τ$-tilting modules.

2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory

As a generalization of acyclic 2-Calabi-Yau categories, we consider 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory; we study their cluster-tilting subcategories and the cluster combinatorics that they encode. We show that such categories have a cluster structure. Triangulated 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory are closely related to representations of certain semi-hereditary categories, more specifically to representations of thread quivers. Thread quivers are a tool to classify and study certain semi-hereditary categories using both quivers and linearly ordered sets (threads). We study the case where the thread quiver consists of a single thread (so that representations of this thread quiver correspond to representations of some linearly ordered set), and show that, similar to the case of a Dynkin quiver of type $A$, the cluster-tilting subcategories can be understood via triangulations of an associated cyclically ordered set. In this way, we gain insight into the structure of the cluster-tilting subcategories of 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory. As an application, we show that every 2-Calabi-Yau category which admits a directed cluster-tilting subcategory with countably many isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects has a cluster-tilting subcategory $\mathcal{V}$ with the following property: any rigid object in the cluster category can be reached from $\mathcal{V}$ by finitely many mutations. This implies that there is a cluster map which is defined on all rigid objects, and thus that there is a cluster algebra whose cluster variables are exactly given by the rigid indecomposable objects.
