Extensive Air Showers Parameters Estimation Using Machine Learning Techniques with Simulations of the FAST Telescope

We present the capabilities of the Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes (FAST) observatory in the single telescope configuration as an important step towards the possible future large-field observatory for detecting ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. Reconstruction of main shower physics parameters are explored on noise-free simulated events using machine learning techniques in the challenging domain of a low-intensity transient signal. We find a very good correlation between the true and reconstructed energy of the shower even with the information from just the four photomultipliers of the single FAST telescope, and a reduced performance for the maximum of the shower development Xmax, using various architectures of artificial deep and convolutional neural networks, with a comparison to a benchmark gradient boost regression model. The resolution in the energy is found at the sub-percent level, while in Xmax it is~$5\%$. The relative difference between predicted and true values is under one percent for energy, while for Xmax it ranges from $-8\%$ to $+17\%$, which can be attributed to the limited information from the single FAST telescope configuration. The results constitute an important capabilities verification and a lesson learned with implications for established FAST prototypes as well as for more complex configurations of the FAST observatory under construction.

Application of Machine Learning Based Top Quark and W Jet Tagging to Hadronic Four-Top Final States Induced by SM and BSM Processes

We apply both cut-based and machine learning techniques using the same inputs to the challenge of hadronic jet substructure recognition, utilizing classical subjettiness variables within the Delphes parameterized detector simulation framework. We focus on jets generated in simulated proton-proton collisions, identifying those consistent with the decay signatures of top quarks or W bosons. Such jets are employed in four-top quark events in fully hadronic final states stemming from both the Standard Model as well as from a new physics process of a hypothetical scalar resonance y0 decaying into a pair of top quarks. We reconstruct the resonance invariant mass and compare it properties over the falling background using the two tagging approaches, with implications to LHC searches.

Application of Machine Learning Based Top Quark and W Jet Tagging to Hadronic Four-Top Final States Induced by SM as well as BSM Processes

We apply gradient boosting machine learning techniques to the problem of hadronic jet substructure recognition using classical subjettiness variables available within a common parameterized detector simulation package DELPHES. Per-jet tagging classification is being explored. Jets produced in simulated proton-proton collisions are identified as consistent with the hypothesis of coming from the decay of a top quark or a W boson and are used to reconstruct the mass of a hypothetical scalar resonance decaying to a pair of top quarks in events where in total four top quarks are produced. Results are compared to the case of a simple cut-based tagging technique for the stacked histograms of a mixture of a Standard Model as well as the new physics process.

Multiple solutions of the Dirichlet problem in multidimensional billiard spaces

Dirichlet problem in an $n$-dimensional billiard space is investigated. In particular, the system of ODEs $\ddot x(t) = f(t,x(t))$ together with Dirichlet boundary conditions $x(0) = A$, $x(T) = B$ in an $n$-dimensional interval $K$ with elastic impact on the boundary of $K$ is considered. The existence of multiple solutions having prescribed number of impacts with the boundary is proved. As a consequence the existence of infinitely many solutions is proved, too. The problem is solved by reformulation it into non-impulsive problem with a discontinuous right-hand side. This auxiliary problem is regularized and the Schauder Fixed Point Theorem is used.
