Autocorrelations in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process and Nagel-Schreckenberg model

We study via Monte Carlo simulation the dynamics of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model on a finite system of length L with open boundary conditions and parallel updates. We find numerically that in both the high and low density regimes the autocorrelation function of the system density behaves like 1-|t|/tau with a finite support [-tau,tau]. This is in contrast to the usual exponential decay typical of equilibrium systems. Furthermore, our results suggest that in fact tau=L/c, and in the special case of maximum velocity 1 (corresponding to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) we can identify the exact dependence of c on the input, output and hopping rates. We also emphasize that the parameter tau corresponds to the integrated autocorrelation time, which plays a fundamental role in quantifying the statistical errors in Monte Carlo simulations of these models.

Exact spin quantum Hall current between boundaries of a lattice strip

Employing an inhomogeneous solvable lattice model, we derive an exact expression for a boundary-to-boundary edge current on a lattice of finite width. This current is an example of a class of parafermionic observables recently introduced in an attempt to rigorously prove conformal invariance of the scaling limit of critical two-dimensional lattice models. It also corresponds to the spin current at the spin-Quantum Hall transition in a model introduced by Chalker and Coddington, and generalized by Gruzberg, Ludwig and Read. Our result is derived from a solution of the $q$-deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation, and is expressed in terms of a symplectic Toda-lattice wave-function.

Exact finite size groundstate of the O(n=1) loop model with open boundaries

We explicitly describe certain components of the finite size groundstate of the inhomogeneous transfer matrix of the O(n=1) loop model on a strip with non-trivial boundaries on both sides. In addition we compute explicitly the groundstate normalisation which is given as a product of four symplectic characters.

Fully packed loop models on finite geometries

Fully packed loop models describe the statistics of closely packed nested polygons on the square lattice. Many exact results can be obtained for these models, even for finite geometries, using their close relationship to alternating-sign matrices and the solvable six-vertex and O(n=1) lattice models. Some results for the exact partition function of fully packed loop models on various finite geometries are briefly reviewed, as well as the well-known order-disorder bulk phase transition present in these models. A detailed study is presented of the distribution of boundary nests of polygons in fully packed loop models with mirror or rotational symmetry. The probability distribution function of such nests, as well as the average number of nests, are obtained analytically, albeit conjecturally. It is further shown that fully packed loop models undergo another phase transition as a function of the boundary nest fugacity. At criticality, we derive a scaling form for the nest distribution function which displays an unusual non-Gaussian cubic exponential behaviour.

The two-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra

We study a two-boundary extension of the Temperley-Lieb algebra which has recently arisen in statistical mechanics. This algebra lies in a quotient of the affine Hecke algebra of type C and has a natural diagrammatic representation. The algebra has three parameters and, for generic values of these, we determine its representation theory. We use the action of the centre of the affine Hecke algebra to show that all irreducible representations lie within a finite dimensional diagrammatic quotient. These representations are fully characterised by an additional parameter related to the action of the centre. For generic values of this parameter there is a unique representation of dimension 2^N and we show that it is isomorphic to a tensor space representation. We construct a basis in which the Gram matrix is diagonal and use this to discuss the irreducibility of this representation.

Slowest relaxation mode of the partially asymmetric exclusion process with open boundaries

We analyze the Bethe ansatz equations describing the complete spectrum of the transition matrix of the partially asymmetric exclusion process on a finite lattice and with the most general open boundary conditions. We extend results obtained recently for totally asymmetric diffusion [J. de Gier and F.H.L. Essler, J. Stat. Mech. P12011 (2006)] to the case of partial symmetry. We determine the finite-size scaling of the spectral gap, which characterizes the approach to stationarity at large times, in the low and high density regimes and on the coexistence line. We observe boundary induced crossovers and discuss possible interpretations of our results in terms of effective domain wall theories.

Punctured plane partitions and the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov and Hirota equations

We consider partial sum rules for the homogeneous limit of the solution of the q-deformed Knizhnik--Zamolodchikov equation with reflecting boundaries in the Dyck path representation. We show that these partial sums arise in a solution of the discrete Hirota equation, and prove that they are the generating functions of $τ^2$-weighted punctured cyclically symmetric transpose complement plane partitions where $τ=-(q+q^{-1})$. In the cases of no or minimal punctures, we prove that these generating functions coincide with $τ^2$-enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices and modifications thereof.

Factorised solutions of Temperley-Lieb $q$KZ equations on a segment

We study the q-deformed Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation in path representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebras. We consider two types of open boundary conditions, and in both cases we derive factorised expressions for the solutions of the qKZ equation in terms of Baxterised Demazurre-Lusztig operators. These expressions are alternative to known integral solutions for tensor product representations. The factorised expressions reveal the algebraic structure within the qKZ equation, and effectively reduce it to a set of truncation conditions on a single scalar function. The factorised expressions allow for an efficient computation of the full solution once this single scalar function is known. We further study particular polynomial solutions for which certain additional factorised expressions give weighted sums over components of the solution. In the homogeneous limit, we formulate positivity conjectures in the spirit of Di Francesco and Zinn-Justin. We further conjecture relations between weighted sums and individual components of the solutions for larger system sizes.

The Razumov-Stroganov conjecture: Stochastic processes, loops and combinatorics

A fascinating conjectural connection between statistical mechanics and combinatorics has in the past five years led to the publication of a number of papers in various areas, including stochastic processes, solvable lattice models and supersymmetry. This connection, known as the Razumov-Stroganov conjecture, expresses eigenstates of physical systems in terms of objects known from combinatorics, which is the mathematical theory of counting. This note intends to explain this connection in light of the recent papers by Zinn-Justin and Di Francesco.

Exact Spectral Gaps of the Asymmetric Exclusion Process with Open Boundaries

We derive the Bethe ansatz equations describing the complete spectrum of the transition matrix of the partially asymmetric exclusion process with the most general open boundary conditions. By analysing these equations in detail for the cases of totally asymmetric and symmetric diffusion, we calculate the finite-size scaling of the spectral gap, which characterizes the approach to stationarity at large times. In the totally asymmetric case we observe boundary induced crossovers between massive, diffusive and KPZ scaling regimes. We further study higher excitations, and demonstrate the absence of oscillatory behaviour at large times on the ``coexistence line'', which separates the massive low and high density phases. In the maximum current phase, oscillations are present on the KPZ scale $t\propto L^{-3/2}$. While independent of the boundary parameters, the spectral gap as well as the oscillation frequency in the maximum current phase have different values compared to the totally asymmetric exclusion process with periodic boundary conditions. We discuss a possible interpretation of our results in terms of an effective domain wall theory.

Bethe Ansatz Solution of the Asymmetric Exclusion Process with Open Boundaries

We derive the Bethe ansatz equations describing the complete spectrum of the transition matrix of the partially asymmetric exclusion process with the most general open boundary conditions. For totally asymmetric diffusion we calculate the spectral gap, which characterizes the approach to stationarity at large times. We observe boundary induced crossovers in and between massive, diffusive and KPZ scaling regimes.

Magic in the spectra of the XXZ quantum chain with boundaries at Delta=0 and Delta=-1/2

We show that from the spectra of the U_q (sl(2)) symmetric XXZ spin-1/2 finite quantum chain at Delta=-1/2 (q=e^{pi i/3}) one can obtain the spectra of certain XXZ quantum chains with diagonal and non-diagonal boundary conditions. Similar observations are made for Delta=0 (q=e^{pi i/2}). In the finite-size scaling limit the relations among the various spectra are the result of identities satisfied by known character functions. For the finite chains the origin of the remarkable spectral identities can be found in the representation theory of one and two boundaries Temperley-Lieb algebras at exceptional points. Inspired by these observations we have discovered other spectral identities between chains with different boundary conditions.

Refined Razumov-Stroganov conjectures for open boundaries

Recently it has been conjectured that the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian, with one boundary operator, acting in a link pattern space is related to vertically and horizontally symmetric alternating-sign matrices (equivalently fully-packed loop configurations (FPL) on a grid with special boundaries). We extend this conjecture by introducing an arbitrary boundary parameter. We show that the parameter dependent ground state is related to refined vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices i.e. with prescribed configurations (respectively, prescribed FPL configurations) in the next to central row. We also conjecture a relation between the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian with two boundary operators and arbitrary coefficients and some doubly refined (dependence on two parameters) FPL configurations. Our conjectures might be useful in the study of ground-states of the O(1) and XXZ models, as well as the stationary states of Raise and Peel models.

Bethe Ansatz for the Temperley-Lieb loop model with open boundaries

We diagonalise the Hamiltonian of the Temperley-Lieb loop model with open boundaries using a coordinate Bethe Ansatz calculation. We find that in the groundstate sector of the loop Hamiltonian, but not in other sectors, a certain constraint on the parameters has to be satisfied. This constraint has a natural interpretation in the Temperley-Lieb algebra with boundary generators. The spectrum of the loop model contains that of the quantum spin-1/2 XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary conditions. We hence derive a recently conjectured solution of the complete spectrum of this XXZ chain. We furthermore point out a connection with recent results for the two-boundary sine-Gordon model.

Nonequilibrium stationary states and equilibrium models with long range interactions

It was recently suggested by Blythe and Evans that a properly defined steady state normalisation factor can be seen as a partition function of a fictitious statistical ensemble in which the transition rates of the stochastic process play the role of fugacities. In analogy with the Lee-Yang description of phase transition of equilibrium systems, they studied the zeroes in the complex plane of the normalisation factor in order to find phase transitions in nonequilibrium steady states. We show that like for equilibrium systems, the ``densities'' associated to the rates are non-decreasing functions of the rates and therefore one can obtain the location and nature of phase transitions directly from the analytical properties of the ``densities''. We illustrate this phenomenon for the asymmetric exclusion process. We actually show that its normalisation factor coincides with an equilibrium partition function of a walk model in which the ``densities'' have a simple physical interpretation.

Loops, matchings and alternating-sign matrices

The appearance of numbers enumerating alternating sign matrices in stationary states of certain stochastic processes is reviewed. New conjectures concerning nest distribution functions are presented as well as a bijection between certain classes of alternating sign matrices and lozenge tilings of hexagons with cut off corners.

The raise and peel model of a fluctuating interface

We propose a one-dimensional nonlocal stochastic model of adsorption and desorption depending on one parameter, the adsorption rate. At a special value of this parameter, the model has some interesting features. For example, the spectrum is given by conformal field theory, and the stationary non-equilibrium probability distribution is given by the two-dimensional equilibrium distribution of the ice model with domain wall type boundary conditions. This connection is used to find exact analytic expressions for several quantities of the stochastic model. Vice versa, some understanding of the ice model with domain wall type boundary conditions can be obtained by the study of the stochastic model. At the special point we study several properties of the model, such as the height fluctuations as well as cluster and avalanche distributions. The latter has a long tail which shows that the model exhibits self organized criticality. We also find in the stationary state a special phase transition without enhancement and with a crossover exponent $ϕ=2/3$. Furthermore, we study the phase diagram of the model as a function of the adsorption rate and find two massive phases and a scale invariant phase where conformal invariance is broken.
