Eisenstein-type series associated to partition ranks

In this paper, we introduce a class of functions that behave like classical Eisenstein series in many ways, but with a key distinction: only their non-holomorphic completions transform like (quasi)modular forms. We show how the partition rank generating function can be expressed in terms of partition traces of these functions. A key feature of our construction is that the completions satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation - a phenomenon typically seen in the context of quantum field theory and string theory. We also show that the Fourier coefficients of these Eisenstein-type series are integral.

False and partial Eisenstein series related to unimodal sequences

Motivated by the fact that the classical Jacobi theta function $\vartheta$ is the exponential generating function of the Eisenstein series, we study the exponential Taylor coefficients (in the elliptic variable) of a related natural partial theta function, as well as a false theta function related to the Dedekind eta function. We prove that the space spanned by these objects is closed under differentiation, analogous to the space of quasimodular forms, and that it contains the quasimodular forms themselves. We further provide their Fourier expansions, establish quasimodular completions, and derive a recursive formula for the Taylor coefficients of the logarithm of the unimodal rank generating function, expressed as partition traces of the false and partial objects.

Quasimodular forms that detect primes are Eisenstein

MacMahon's partition functions and their extensions provide equations that identify prime numbers as solutions. These results depend on the theory of (mixed weight) quasimodular forms on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Two of the authors, along with Craig, conjectured an explicit description of the set of prime-detecting quasimodular forms in terms of Eisenstein series and their derivatives. Kane et al.\ recently verified this conjecture using analytic methods. We offer an alternative proof using the theory of $\ell$-adic Galois representations associated to modular forms.

Quantum KdV hierarchy and shifted symmetric functions

We study spectral properties of the quantum Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy defined by Buryak and Rossi. We prove that eigenvalues to first order in the dispersion parameter are given by shifted symmetric functions. The proof is based on the boson-fermion correspondence and an analysis of quartic expressions in fermions. As an application, we obtain a closed evaluation of certain double Hodge integrals on the moduli spaces of curves. Finally, we provide an explicit formula for the eigenvectors to first order in the dispersion parameter. In particular, we show that its Schur expansion is supported on partitions for which the Hamming distance is minimal.

Critical points of modular forms

We count the number of critical points of a modular form with real Fourier coefficients in a $γ$-translate of the standard fundamental domain $\mathcal{F}$ (with $γ\in \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$). Whereas by the valence formula the (weighted) number of zeros of this modular form in $γ\mathcal{F}$ is a constant only depending on its weight, we give a closed formula for this number of critical points in terms of those zeros of the modular form lying on the boundary of $\mathcal{F},$ the value of $γ^{-1}(\infty)$ and the weight. More generally, we indicate what can be said about the number of zeros of a quasimodular form.

Limiting behaviour and modular completions of MacMahon-like q-series

Recently, MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor functions were shown to link partitions, quasimodular forms, and q-multiple zeta values. In this paper, we explore many further properties and extensions of these. Firstly, we address a question of Ono by producing infinite families of MacMahon-like functions that approximate the colored partition functions (and indeed other eta quotients). We further explore the MacMahon-like functions and discover new and suggestive arithmetic structure and modular completions.

Integer partitions detect the primes

We show that integer partitions, the fundamental building blocks in additive number theory, detect prime numbers in an unexpected way. Answering a question of Schneider, we show that the primes are the solutions to special equations in partition functions. For example, an integer $n\geq 2$ is prime if and only if $$ (3n^3 - 13n^2 + 18n - 8)M_1(n) + (12n^2 - 120n + 212)M_2(n) -960M_3(n) = 0, $$ where the $M_a(n)$ are MacMahon's well-studied partition functions. More generally, for "MacMahonesque" partition functions $M_{\vec{a}}(n),$ we prove that there are infinitely many such prime detecting equations with constant coefficients, such as $$ 80M_{(1,1,1)}(n)-12M_{(2,0,1)}(n)+12M_{(2,1,0)}(n)+\dots-12M_{(1,3)}(n)-39M_{(3,1)}(n)=0. $$

Formal multiple Eisenstein series and their derivations

We introduce the algebra of formal multiple Eisenstein series and study its derivations. This algebra is motivated by the classical multiple Eisenstein series, introduced by Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier as a hybrid of classical Eisenstein series and multiple zeta values. In depth one, we obtain formal versions of the Eisenstein series satisfying the same algebraic relations as the classical Eisenstein series. In particular, they generate an algebra whose elements we call formal quasimodular forms. We show that the algebra of formal multiple Eisenstein series is an $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-algebra by formalizing the usual derivations for quasimodular forms and extending them naturally to the whole algebra. Additionally, we introduce some families of derivations for general quasi-shuffle algebras, providing a broader context for these derivations. Further, we prove that a quotient of this algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of formal multiple zeta values. This gives a novel and purely formal approach to classical (quasi)modular forms and builds a new link between (formal) multiple zeta values and modular forms.

Partitions, Multiple Zeta Values and the q-bracket

We provide a framework for relating certain q-series defined by sums over partitions to multiple zeta values. In particular, we introduce a space of polynomial functions on partitions for which the associated q-series are q-analogues of multiple zeta values. By explicitly describing the (regularized) multiple zeta values one obtains as $q\to 1$, we extend previous results known in this area. Using this together with the fact that other families of functions on partitions, such as shifted symmetric functions, are elements in our space will then give relations among (q-analogues of) multiple zeta values. Conversely, we will show that relations among multiple zeta values can be `lifted' to the world of functions on partitions, which provides new examples of functions where the associated q-series are quasimodular.

Cylinder counts and spin refinement of area Siegel-Veech constants

We study the area Siegel-Veech constants of components of strata of abelian differentials with even or odd spin parity. We prove that these constants may be computed using either: (I) quasimodular forms, or (II) intersection theory. These results refine the main theorems of arXiv:1606.04065 and arXiv:1901.01785 which described the area Siegel-Veech constants of the full strata. Along the proof of (II), we establish a new identity for Siegel-Veech constants of cylinders.

Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces and a Kaneko-Zagier equation for Jacobi forms

We prove the existence of quasi-Jacobi form solutions for an analogue of the Kaneko--Zagier differential equation for Jacobi forms. The transformation properties of the solutions under the Jacobi group are derived. A special feature of the solutions is the polynomial dependence of the index parameter. The results yield an explicit conjectural description for all double ramification cycle integrals in the Gromov--Witten theory of K3 surfaces.
