Characterizing quark gluon plasma by thermal photons and lepton pairs

The photon spectra measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb+Pb collisions at Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies has been analyzed with a view of extracting the properties of thermal system formed in these collisions. The results of the analysis are compared with the previously studied spectra measured at Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies. The thermal dilepton spectra from the Pb+Pb collision at LHC energy has been predicted for the initial conditions constrained by the thermal photon spectra at the same collision conditions. The slope of the photon has been used to estimate the rise in the effective degeneracy with the charged particle multiplicity of the system. The slopes of the lepton pair spectra for different invariant mass windows have been used to conjecture the average radial flow velocity of the high temperature phase.

Radiative Processes in Quark-Gluon Plasma

The spectrum of emitted gluons from the process $\mathrm{gg\rightarrow ggg}$ has been evaluated by relaxing some of the approximations used in earlier works. The formula obtained in the present work has been applied to several physical quantities. A general expression for the dead cone of gluons radiated by virtual partons has been derived. It is observed that the suppression caused by the high virtuality is overwhelmingly large as compared to that on account of conventional dead-cone of heavy quarks.

Drag and diffusion co-efficients of heavy quarks in hard thermal loop approximations

The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) have been evaluated using Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) approximations. The HTL corrections to the relevant propagators and vertices have been considered. It is observed that the magnitudes of both the transport coefficients are changed significantly from values obtained by earlier approaches where either (i) the $t$ channel divergence in T=0 pQCD matrix element is shielded simply by Debye mass. or (ii) only HTL resummed propagator is used ignoring the HTL corrections at the interaction vertices. The implications of these changes in the transport coefficients on the heavy ion phenomenology have been discussed.

Drag and diffusion coefficients of $B$ mesons in hot hadronic matter

The drag and diffusion coefficients of a hot hadronic medium consisting of pions, kaons and eta using open beauty mesons as a probe have been evaluated. The interaction of the probe with the hadronic matter has been treated in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. It is observed that the magnitude of both the transport coefficients are significant, indicating substantial amount of interaction of the heavy mesons with the thermal bath. The results may have significant impact on the experimental observables like the suppression of single electron spectra originating from the decays of heavy mesons produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies

Dead cone due to parton virtuality

A general expression for the dead cone of gluons radiated by virtual partons has been derived. The conventional dead cone for massive on-shell quarks and the dead cone for the massless virtual partons have been obtained by using different limits of the general expression. Radiative suppression due to the virtuality of initial parton jets in Heavy-Ion Collisions (HIC) has been discussed. It is observed that the suppression caused by the high virtuality is overwhelmingly large as compared to that on account of conventional dead-cone of heavy quarks. The dead cone due to virtuality may play a crucial role in explaining the observed similar suppression patterns of light and heavy quarks jets in heavy ion collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

In search of quark gluon plasma in nuclear collisions

At high temperatures and densities the nuclear matter undergoes a phase transition to a new state of matter called quark gluon plasma (QGP). This new state of matter which existed in the universe after a few microsecond of the big bang can be created in the laboratory by colliding two nuclei at relativistic energies. In this presentation we will discuss how the the properties of QGP can be extracted by analyzing the spectra of photons, dileptons and heavy flavours produced in nuclear collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies.

Examination of the Gunion-Bertsch formula for soft gluon radiation

The spectrum of emitted gluons from the process g+g -> g+g+g has been evaluated by relaxing some of the approximations used in earlier works. The difference in the results from earlier calculations have been pointed out. The formula obtained in the present work has been applied to estimate physical quantities like equilibration rate of gluons and the energy loss of fast gluon in the gluonic plasma.

Scaling quark gluon plasma by HBT interferometry with lepton pairs

We study the intensity interferometry with lepton pairs for nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. It is argued that the invariant mass dependence of HBT radii extracted from the correlation functions of dilepton pairs can be used as an efficient tool to scale the size and life time of the quark gluon plasma expected to be formed in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC. Quantitatively different magnitudes of HBT radii are obtained at RHIC and LHC indicating stronger radial flow at LHC.

Probing Quark Gluon Plasma by Heavy Flavors

The drag and diffusion coefficients of charm and bottom quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) have been evaluated within the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD). Both radiative and collisional processes of dissipation are included in evaluating these transport coefficients. The dead cone as well as the LPM effects on radiative energy loss of heavy quarks have also been considered. The Fokker Planck equation has been solved to study the dissipation of heavy quarks momentum in QGP. The nuclear suppression factor, $R_{\mathrm AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2^{HF}$ of the non-photonic electrons resulting from the semi-leptonic decays of hadrons containing charm and bottom quarks have been evaluated for RHIC and LHC nuclear collision conditions. We find that the observed $R_{\mathrm AA}$ and $v_2$ at RHIC can be reproduced simultaneously within the pQCD framework.

Momentum dependence of drag coefficients and heavy flavour suppression in quark gluon plasma

The momentum dependence of the drag coefficient of heavy quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) has been evaluated. The results have been used to estimate the nuclear suppression factor of charm and bottom quarks in QGP. We observe that the momentum dependence of the transport coefficients plays crucial role in the suppression of the heavy quarks and consequently in discerning the properties of QGP using heavy flavours as a probe. We show that the large suppression of the heavy quarks observed at RHIC and LHC is predominantly due to the radiative losses. The suppression of $D^0$ in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy - recently measured by the ALICE collaboration has also been studied.

Effects of equation of state on nuclear suppression and the initial entropy density of quark gluon plasma

We study the effects of the equation of state on the nuclear suppression of heavy flavours in quark gluon plasma and estimate the initial entropy density of the system produced at the highest RHIC energy. For this purpose we have used the experimental data on the charged particle multiplicity and the nuclear suppression of single electron spectra originating from the semi-leptonic decays of open charm and beauty mesons. We have used inputs from lattice QCD to minimize the model dependence of the results. We obtain the value of the initial entropy density which varies from 20 to 59 /fm$^3$ depending on the value of the velocity of sound that one uses for the analysis. Our investigation leads to a conservative value of the initial entropy density $\sim 20/$fm$^3$ with corresponding initial temperature $\sim 210$ MeV well above the value of the transition temperature predicted by lattice QCD.

Probing the QGP Phase Boundary with Thermal Properties of $ϕ$ Mesons

A novel attempt has been made to probe the QCD phase boundary by using the experimental data for transverse momenta of ϕ mesons produced in nuclear collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. The data are confronted with simple thermodynamic expectations and lattice QCD results. The experimental data indicate a first-order phase transition, with a mixed phase stretching the energy density between \sim1 and 3.2 GeV/fm3 corresponding to SPS energies.

Observing many body effects on lepton pair production from low mass enhancement and flow at RHIC and LHC energies

The $ρ$ spectral function at finite temperature calculated using the real-time formalism of thermal field theory is used to evaluate the low mass dilepton spectra. The analytic structure of the $ρ$ propagator is studied and contributions to the dilepton yield in the region below the bare $ρ$ peak from the different cuts in the spectral function are discussed. The space-time integrated yield shows significant enhancement in the region below the bare $ρ$ peak in the invariant mass spectra. It is argued that the variation of the inverse slope of the transverse mass ($M_T$) distribution can be used as an efficient tool to predict the presence of two different phases of the matter during the evolution of the system. Sensitivity of the effective temperature obtained from the slopes of the $M_T$ spectra to the medium effects are studied.

Evolution of collectivity as a signal of quark gluon plasma formation in heavy ion collisions

A measurement for studying the mass dependence of the dilepton interferometry in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments as a tool to characterize the quark-gluon phase is proposed. In calculations involving dileptons, we show that the mass dependence of radii extracted from the virtual photon (dilepton) interferometry provide access to the development of collective flow with time. It is argued that the non-monotonic variation of HBT radii with invariant mass of the lepton pairs signals the formation of quark gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions. Our proposal of experimentally measuring the ratio, $R_{\mathrm out}/R_{\mathrm side}$ for dileptons can be used to estimate the average life times of the partonic as well as the hadronic phases.

Thermal radiation from an expanding viscous medium

The effects of viscosity on the space time evolution of QGP produced in nuclear collisions at RHIC energies have been studied. The entropy generated due to the viscous motion of the fluid has been taken into account in constraining the initial temperature by the final multiplicity (measured at the freeze-out point). The viscous effects on the photon spectra has been introduced consistently through the evolution dynamics and phase space factors of the particles participating in the production process. We notice a stronger effect on the photon spectra originating from QGP than hadronic matter. A detectable shift is observed in the space-time integrated p_T distribution of photons due to dissipative effects.

Muon pairs from In+In collision at SPS energy

NA60 collaboration has extracted the inverse slope parameters, T_{eff} of the dimuon spectra originating from the In+In collisions at root(s_NN)=17.3 GeV for various invariant mass region. They have observed that the inverse slope parameter as a function of invariant mass of the lepton pair drops beyond the rho-peak. In the present work, first we reproduce the observed invariant mass and transverse momentum spectra of the muon pairs. Then show that the slope parameters extracted from the transverse momentum distributions for various invariant mass region windows can be explained by assuming formation of a partonic phase initially which reverts to hadronic phase through a weak first order phase transition at a temperature T_c ~ 175 MeV. It is observed that a scenario without the formation of a partonic phase does not reproduce the non-monotonic behaviour of the inverse slope parameter non typical of radial flow.

The results may have noticeable impact on the experimental observable like the suppression of single electron spectra originating form the decays of heavy mesons in nuclear collisions at relativistic energies.

Transport coefficients of gluonic fluid

The shear ($η$) and bulk ($ζ$) viscous coefficients have been evaluated for a gluonic fluid. The elastic, $gg \rightarrow gg$ and the inelastic, number non-conserving, $gg\rightarrow ggg$ processes have been considered as the dominant perturbative processes in evaluating the viscous co-efficients to entropy density ($s$) ratios. Recently the processes: $gg \rightarrow ggg$ has been revisited and a correction to the widely used Gunion-Bertsch (GB) formula has been obtained. The $η$ and $ζ$ have been evaluated for gluonic fluid with the formula derived recently. The sensitivity of the quantity, $η/s$ on the running coupling constant is also discussed. At $α_s=0.3$ we get $η/s=0.24$ which is close to the value obtained from the analysis of the elliptic flow at RHIC experiments.
