BV bialgebra structures in Floer theory and string topology

We derive the notions of BV unital infinitesimal bialgebra and BV Frobenius algebra from the topology of suitable compactifications of moduli spaces of decorated genus 0 curves. We construct these structures respectively on reduced symplectic homology and Rabinowitz Floer homology. As an application, we construct these structures in nonequivariant string topology. We also show how the Lie bialgebra structure in equivariant string topology, and more generally on $S^1$-equivariant symplectic homology, is obtained as a formal consequence.

Remarks on the rational SFT formalism

Recent work of Siegel and of Moreno and Zhou uses rational symplectic field theory to construct (different) invariants of contact manifolds. Here, I review how the algebraic parts of their work can be phrased in the algebraic language of the original description of SFT by Eliashberg, Givental and Hofer.

Knot contact homology, string topology, and the cord algebra

The conormal Lagrangian $L_K$ of a knot $K$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is the submanifold of the cotangent bundle $T^* \mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of covectors along $K$ that annihilate tangent vectors to $K$. By intersecting with the unit cotangent bundle $S^* \mathbb{R}^3$, one obtains the unit conormal $Λ_K$, and the Legendrian contact homology of $Λ_K$ is a knot invariant of $K$, known as knot contact homology. We define a version of string topology for strings in $\mathbb{R}^3 \cup L_K$ and prove that this is isomorphic in degree 0 to knot contact homology. The string topology perspective gives a topological derivation of the cord algebra (also isomorphic to degree 0 knot contact homology) and relates it to the knot group. Together with the isomorphism this gives a new proof that knot contact homology detects the unknot. Our techniques involve a detailed analysis of certain moduli spaces of holomorphic disks in $T^* \mathbb{R}^3$ with boundary on $\mathbb{R}^3 \cup L_K$.

Homological algebra related to surfaces with boundary

In this article we describe an algebraic framework which can be used in three related but different contexts: string topology, symplectic field theory, and Lagrangian Floer theory of higher genus. It turns out that the relevant algebraic structure for all three contexts is a homotopy version of involutive bi-Lie algebras, which we call IBL$_\infty$-algebras.

Fukaya's work on Lagrangian embeddings

This is an expository account of some applications of string topology to the study of Lagrangian embeddings into symplectic manifolds, originally due to Fukaya, which was written as a contribution to a book on free loop spaces.

The Gromov width of 4-dimensional tori

We show that every 4-dimensional torus with a linear symplectic form can be fully filled by one symplectic ball. If such a torus is not symplectomorphic to a product of 2-dimensional tori with equal sized factors, then it can also be fully filled by any finite collection of balls provided only that their total volume is less than that of the 4-torus with its given linear symplectic form.

Algebraic Torsion in Contact Manifolds

We extract a nonnegative integer-valued invariant, which we call the "order of algebraic torsion", from the Symplectic Field Theory of a closed contact manifold, and show that its finiteness gives obstructions to the existence of symplectic fillings and exact symplectic cobordisms. A contact manifold has algebraic torsion of order zero if and only if it is algebraically overtwisted (i.e. has trivial contact homology), and any contact 3-manifold with positive Giroux torsion has algebraic torsion of order one (though the converse is not true). We also construct examples for each nonnegative k of contact 3-manifolds that have algebraic torsion of order k but not k - 1, and derive consequences for contact surgeries on such manifolds. The appendix by Michael Hutchings gives an alternative proof of our cobordism obstructions in dimension three using a refinement of the contact invariant in Embedded Contact Homology.

The role of string topology in symplectic field theory

We outline a program for incorporating holomorphic curves with Lagrangian boundary conditions into symplectic field theory, with an emphasis on ideas, geometric intuition, and a description of the resulting algebraic structures.
