Factorization of solutions of linear differential equations

This paper supplements recents results on linear differential equations $f''+Af=0$, where the coefficient $A$ is analytic in the unit disc of the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. It is shown that, if $A$ is analytic and $|A(z)|^2(1-|z|^2)^3\, dm(z)$ is a Carleson measure, then all non-trivial solutions of $f''+Af=0$ can be factorized as $f=Be^g$, where $B$ is a Blaschke product whose zero-sequence $Λ$ is uniformly separated and where $g\in{\rm BMOA}$ satisfies the interpolation property $$g'(z_n) = -\frac{1}{2} \, \frac{B''(z_n)}{B'(z_n)}, \quad z_n\inΛ.$$ Among other things, this factorization implies that all solutions of $f''+Af=0$ are functions in a Hardy space and have no singular inner factors. Zero-free solutions play an important role as their maximal growth is similar to the general case. The study of zero-free solutions produces a new result on Riccati differential equations.

Irregular finite order solutions of complex LDE's in unit disc

It is shown that the order and the lower order of growth are equal for all non-trivial solutions of $f^{(k)}+A f=0$ if and only if the coefficient $A$ is analytic in the unit disc and $\log^+ M(r,A)/\log(1-r)$ tends to a finite limit as $r\to 1^-$. A family of concrete examples is constructed, where the order of solutions remain the same while the lower order may vary on a certain interval depending on the irregular growth of the coefficient. These coefficients emerge as the logarithm of their modulus approximates smooth radial subharmonic functions of prescribed irregular growth on a sufficiently large subset of the unit disc. A result describing the phenomenon behind these highly non-trivial examples is also established. En route to results of general nature, a new sharp logarithmic derivative estimate involving the lower order of growth is discovered. In addition to these estimates, arguments used are based, in particular, on the Wiman-Valiron theory adapted for the lower order, and on a good understanding of the right-derivative of the logarithm of the maximum modulus.

Description of growth and oscillation of solutions of complex LDE's

It is known that, equally well in the unit disc as in the whole complex plane, the growth of the analytic coefficients $A_0,\dotsc,A_{k-2}$ of \begin{equation*} f^{(k)} + A_{k-2} f^{(k-2)} + \dotsb + A_1 f'+ A_0 f = 0, \quad k\geq 2, \end{equation*} determines, under certain growth restrictions, not only the growth but also the oscillation of its non-trivial solutions, and vice versa. A uniform treatment of this principle is given in the disc $D(0,R)$, $0<R\leq \infty$, by using several measures for growth that are more flexible than those in the existing literature, and therefore permit more detailed analysis. In particular, results obtained are not restricted to cases where solutions are of finite (iterated) order of growth in the classical sense. The new findings are based on an accurate integrated estimate for logarithmic derivatives of meromorphic functions, which preserves generality in terms of three free parameters.

Oscillation of solutions of LDE's in domains conformally equivalent to unit disc

Oscillation of solutions of $f^{(k)} + a_{k-2} f^{(k-2)} + \dotsb + a_1 f' +a_0 f = 0$ is studied in domains conformally equivalent to the unit disc. The results are applied, for example, to Stolz angles, horodiscs, sectors and strips. The method relies on a new conformal transformation of higher order linear differential equations. Information on the existence of zero-free solution bases is also obtained.

Converse growth estimates for ODEs with slowly growing solutions

Let $f_1,f_2$ be linearly independent solutions of $f''+Af=0$, where the coefficient $A$ is an analytic function in the open unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ of $\mathbb{C}$. It is shown that many properties of this differential equation can be described in terms of the subharmonic auxiliary function $u=-\log\, (f_1/f_2)^{\#}$. For example, the case when $\sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}} |A(z)|(1-|z|^2)^2 < \infty$ and $f_1/f_2$ is normal, is characterized by the condition $\sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}} |\nabla u(z)|(1-|z|^2) < \infty$. Different types of Blaschke-oscillatory equations are also described in terms of harmonic majorants of $u$. Even if $f_1,f_2$ are bounded linearly independent solutions of $f''+Af=0$, it is possible that $\sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}} |A(z)|(1-|z|^2)^2 = \infty$ or $f_1/f_2$ is non-normal. These results relate to sharpness discussion of recent results in the literature, and are succeeded by a detailed analysis of differential equations with bounded solutions. Analogues results for the Nevanlinna class are also considered, by taking advantage of Nevanlinna interpolating sequences. It is shown that, instead of considering solutions with prescribed zeros, it is possible to construct a bounded solution of $f''+Af=0$ in such a way that it solves an interpolation problem natural to bounded analytic functions, while $|A(z)|^2(1-|z|^2)^3\, dm(z)$ remains to be a Carleson measure.

Slowly growing solutions of ODEs revisited

Solutions of the differential equation $f''+Af=0$ are considered assuming that $A$ is analytic in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ and satisfies \begin{equation} \label{eq:dag} \sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}} \, |A(z)| (1-|z|^2)^2 \log\frac{e}{1-|z|} < \infty. \tag{$\star$} \end{equation} By recent results in the literature, such restriction has been associated to coefficient conditions which place all solutions in the Bloch space $\mathcal{B}$. In this paper it is shown that any coefficient condition implying \eqref{eq:dag} fails to detect certain cases when Bloch solutions do appear. The converse problem is also addressed: What can be said about the growth of the coefficient $A$ if all solutions of $f''+Af=0$ belong to $\mathcal{B}$? An overall revised look into slowly growing solutions is presented, emphasizing function spaces $\mathcal{B}$, $\rm{BMOA}$ and $\rm{VMOA}$.

Solutions of complex differential equation having zeros on pre-given sequences

Behavior of solutions of $f''+Af=0$ is discussed under the assumption that $A$ is analytic in $\mathbb{D}$ and $\sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}}(1-|z|^2)^2|A(z)|<\infty$, where $\mathbb{D}$ is the unit disc of the complex plane. As a main result it is shown that such differential equation may admit a non-trivial solution whose zero-sequence does not satisfy the Blaschke condition. This gives an answer to an open question in the literature. It is also proved that $Λ\subset\mathbb{D}$ is the zero-sequence of a non-trivial solution of $f''+Af=0$ where $|A(z)|^2(1-|z|^2)^3\, dm(z)$ is a Carleson measure if and only if $Λ$ is uniformly separated. As an application an old result, according to which there exists a non-normal function which is uniformly locally univalent, is improved.

Linear differential equations with slowly growing solutions

This research concerns coefficient conditions for linear differential equations in the unit disc of the complex plane. In the higher order case the separation of zeros (of maximal multiplicity) of solutions is considered, while in the second order case slowly growing solutions in $H^\infty$, $\rm{BMOA}$ and the Bloch space are discussed. A counterpart of the Hardy-Stein-Spencer formula for higher derivatives is proved, and then applied to study solutions in the Hardy spaces.

Inner Functions in certain Hardy-Sobolev Spaces

For $1/2<p<1$, a description of inner functions whose derivative is in the Hardy space $H^p$ is given in terms of either their mapping properties or the geometric distribution of their zeros.

On non-normal solutions of linear differential equations

Normality arguments are applied to study the oscillation of solutions of $f''+Af=0$, where the coefficient $A$ is analytic in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ and $\sup_{z\in\mathbb{D}} (1-|z|^2)^2|A(z)| < \infty$. It is shown that such differential equation may admit a non-normal solution having prescribed uniformly separated zeros.

On oscillation of solutions of linear differential equations

An interrelationship is found between the accumulation points of zeros of non-trivial solutions of $f"+Af=0$ and the boundary behavior of the analytic coefficient $A$ in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ of the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. It is also shown that the geometric distribution of zeros of any non-trivial solution of $f"+Af=0$ is severely restricted if $$\label{eq:cs_a}\tag{$\star$} |A(z)| (1-|z|^2)^2 \leq 1 + C (1-|z|), \quad z\in\mathbb{D}, $$ for any constant $0<C<\infty$. These considerations are related to the open problem whether \eqref{eq:cs_a} implies finite oscillation for all non-trivial solutions.

Uniform separation through intermediate points

It is shown that a separated sequence of points in the unit disc of the complex plane is in fact uniformly separated, if there exists a certain intermediate sequence whose separated subsequences are uniformly separated. This property is applied to improve a recent result in the theory of differential equations.

Mean growth and geometric zero distribution of solutions of linear differential equations

The aim of this paper is to consider certain conditions on the coefficient $A$ of the differential equation $f"+Af=0$ in the unit disc, which place all normal solutions $f$ to the union of Hardy spaces or result in the zero-sequence of each non-trivial solution to be uniformly separated. The conditions on the coefficient are given in terms of Carleson measures.

Jointly maximal products in weighted growth spaces

It is shown that for any non-decreasing, continuous and unbounded doubling function $\om$ on $[0,1)$, there exist two analytic infinite products $f_0$ and $f_1$ such that the asymptotic relation $|f_0(z)| + |f_1(z)| \asymp \om(|z|)$ is satisfied for all $z$ in the unit disc. It is also shown that both functions $f_j$ for $j=0,1$ satisfy $T(r,f_j)\asymp\logω(r)$, as $r\to1^-$, and hence give examples of analytic functions for which the Nevanlinna characteristic admits the regular slow growth induced by $ω$.
