Resonance linewidth and inhomogeneous broadening in a metamaterial array

We examine the effect of inhomogeneous broadening on the collective response of a planar metamaterial consisting of asymmetric split ring resonators. We show that such a response leads to a transmission resonance that can persist when the broadening of individual meta-atom resonance frequencies is roughly one half the frequency characterizing the split ring asymmetry. We also find that larger degrees of inhomogeneous broadening can drastically alter the cooperative response, destroying this resonance. The reduced effect of cooperative response due to inhomogeneous broadening may find applications in producing metamaterial samples that more closely mimic homogeneous magneto-dielectric medium with well-defined susceptibility and permittivity.

Theoretical formalism for collective electromagnetic response of discrete metamaterial systems

We develop a general formalism to describe the propagation of a near-resonant electromagnetic field in a medium composed of magnetodielectric resonators. As the size and the spatial separation of nanofabricated resonators in a metamaterial array is frequently less than the wavelength, we describe them as discrete scatterers, supporting a single mode of current oscillation represented by a single dynamic variable. We derive a Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism for the coupled electromagnetic fields and oscillating currents in the length gauge, obtained by the Power-Zienau-Woolley transformation. The response of each resonator to electromagnetic field is then described by polarization and magnetization densities that, to the lowest order in a multipole expansion, generate electric and magnetic dipole excitations. We derive a closed set of equations for the coherently scattered field and normal mode amplitudes of current oscillations of each resonator both within the rotating wave approximation, in which case the radiative decay rate is much smaller than the resonance frequency, and without such an assumption. The set of equations includes the radiative couplings between a discrete set of resonators mediated by the electromagnetic field, fully incorporating recurrent scattering processes to all orders. By considering an example of a two-dimensional split ring resonator metamaterial array, we show that the system responds cooperatively to near-resonant field, exhibiting collective eigenmodes, resonance frequencies, and radiative linewidths that result from strong radiative interactions between closely-spaced resonators.

Energetically stable singular vortex cores in an atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We analyze the structure and stability of singular singly quantized vortices in a rotating spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the singular vortex can be energetically stable in both the ferromagnetic and polar phases despite the existence of a lower-energy nonsingular coreless vortex in the ferromagnetic phase. The spin-1 system exhibits an energetic hierarchy of length scales resulting from different interaction strengths and we find that the vortex cores deform to a larger size determined by the characteristic length scale of the spin-dependent interaction. We show that in the ferromagnetic phase the resulting stable core structure, despite apparent complexity, can be identified as a single polar core with axially symmetric density profile which is nonvanishing everywhere. In the polar phase, the energetically favored core deformation leads to a splitting of a singly quantized vortex into a pair of half-quantum vortices that preserves the topology of the vortex outside the extended core region, but breaks the axial symmetry of the core. The resulting half-quantum vortices exhibit nonvanishing ferromagnetic cores.

Topological interface engineering and defect crossing in ultracold atomic gases

We propose an experimentally feasible scheme for topological interface engineering and show how it can be used for studies of dynamics of topologically nontrivial interfaces and perforation of defects and textures across such interfaces. The method makes use of the internal spin structure of the atoms together with locally applied control of interaction strengths to create many-particle states with highly complex topological properties. In particular, we consider a constructed coherent interface between topologically distinct phases of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.

Fragmentation, domain formation and atom number fluctuations of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We theoretically study the loading of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate to an optical lattice in a tightly-confined one-dimensional trap. Due to quantum fluctuations the relative inter and intra species phase coherence between the atoms and the on-site atom number fluctuations are reduced in the miscible regime. For the immiscible case the fluctuations are enhanced and the atoms form metastable interleaved spatially separated domains where the domain length and its fluctuations are affected by quantum fluctuations.

Controlled manipulation of light by cooperative response of atoms in an optical lattice

We show that a cooperative atom response in an optical lattice to resonant incident light can be employed for precise control and manipulation of light on a subwavelength scale. Specific collective excitation modes of the system that result from strong light-mediated dipole-dipole interactions can be addressed by tailoring the spatial phase-profile of the incident light. We demonstrate how the collective response can be used to produce optical excitations at well-isolated sites on the lattice.

Pulsating and persistent vector solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a lattice upon phase separation instability

We study numerically the outcome of the phase separation instability of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. When only one excitation mode is unstable a bound pair of a bright and dark soliton-like structures periodically appears and disappears, whereas for more than one unstable mode a persistent soliton-antisoliton pair develops. The oscillating soliton represents a regime where the two-species condensate neither remains phase-separated nor is dynamically stable.

Quantum dynamics of instability-induced pulsations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice in the limit of weak atom-atom interactions, including an approximate model for quantum fluctuations. A pulsating dynamical instability in which atoms periodically collect together and subsequently disperse back into the initial homogeneous state may occur in the time evolution. We take into account the quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. We observe that the quasiperiodic behavior still persists for a single realization that represents a typical experimental outcome, but ensemble averages show various manifestations of quantum fluctuations. Quantum effects become more prominent when the effective interaction strength is increased.

Nonadiabatic dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate which is split in a harmonic trap by turning up a periodic optical lattice potential. We evaluate the dynamical evolution of the phase coherence along the lattice and the number fluctuations in individual lattice sites within the stochastic truncated Wigner approximation when several atoms occupy each site. We show that the saturation of the number squeezing at high lattice strengths, which was observed in recent experiments by Orzel et. al., can be explained by the nonadiabaticity of the splitting.

Split-step Fourier methods for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

We perform a systematic study of the accuracy of split-step Fourier transform methods for the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation using symbolic calculation. Provided the most recent approximation for the wave function is always used in the nonlinear atom-atom interaction potential energy, every split-step algorithm we have tried has the same-order time stepping error for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Schroedinger equation.

Transfer and storage of vortex states in light and matter waves

We theoretically explore the transfer of vortex states between atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and optical pulses using ultra-slow and stopped light techniques. We find shining a coupling laser on a rotating two-component ground state condensate with a vortex lattice generates a probe laser field with optical vortices. We also find that optical vortex states can be robustly stored in the atomic superfluids for long times (>100 ms).

Optical detection of fractional particle number in an atomic Fermi-Dirac gas

We study theoretically a Fermi-Dirac atomic gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice coupled to a coherent electromagnetic field with a topologically nontrivial soliton phase profile. We argue that the resulting fractional eigenvalues of the particle number operator can be detected via light scattering. This could be a truly quantum mechanical measurement of the particle number fractionalization in a dilute atomic gas.

Particle number fractionization of an atomic Fermi-Dirac gas in an optical lattice

We show that a dilute 2-species gas of Fermi-Dirac alkali-metal atoms in a periodic optical lattice may exhibit fractionization of particle number when the two components are coupled via a coherent electromagnetic field with a topologically nontrivial phase profile. This results in fractional eigenvalues of the spin operator with vanishing fluctuations. The fractional part can be accurately controlled by modifying the effective detuning of the electromagnetic field.

Measurement of relative phase diffusion between two Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method of measuring diffusion of the relative phase between two Bose-Einstein condensates occupying different nuclear or spin hyperfine states coupled by a two-photon transition via an intermediate level. Due to the macroscopic quantum coherence the condensates can be decoupled from the electromagnetic fields. The rate of decoherence and the phase collapse may be determined from the occupation of the intermediate level or the absorption of radiation.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential as an open quantum system

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential in the two-mode approximation. The dissipation of energy from the condensate is described by the coupling to a thermal reservoir of non-condensate modes. As a consequence of the coupling the self-locked population imbalance in the macroscopic quantum self-trapping decays away. We show that a coherent state predicted by spontaneous symmetry breaking is not robust and decoheres rapidly into a statistical mixture due to the interactions between condensate and non-condensate atoms. However, via stochastic simulations we find that with a sufficiently fast measurement rate of the relative phase between the two wells the matter wave coherence is established even in the presence of the decoherence.

Lorentz-Lorenz shift in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the quantum field theory of light-matter interactions for quantum degenerate atomic gases at low light intensity. We argue that the contact interactions between atoms emerging in the dipole gauge may be ignored. Specifically, they are canceled by concurrent infinite level shifts of the atoms. Our development yields the classic Lorentz-Lorenz local-field shift of the atomic resonance.

Macroscopic superpositions of Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider two dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates with opposite velocities from which a monochromatic light field detuned far from the resonance of the optical transition is coherently scattered. In the thermodynamic limit, when the relative fluctuations of the atom number difference between the two condensates vanish, the relative phase between the Bose-Einstein condensates may be established in a superposition state by detections of spontaneously scattered photons, even though the condensates have initially well-defined atom numbers. For a finite system, stochastic simulations show that the measurements of the scattered photons lead to a randomly drifting relative phase and drive the condensates into entangled superpositions of number states. This is because according to Bose-Einstein statistics the scattering to an already occupied state is enhanced.

Pumping two dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates with Raman light scattering

We propose an optical method for increasing the number of atoms in a pair of dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensates. The method uses laser-driven Raman transitions which scatter atoms between the condensate and non-condensate atom fractions. For a range of condensate phase differences there is destructive quantum interference of the amplitudes for scattering atoms out of the condensates. Because the total atom scattering rate into the condensates is unaffected the condensates grow. This mechanism is analogous to that responsible for optical lasing without inversion. Growth using macroscopic quantum interference may find application as a pump for an atom laser.
