Elastic behavior in Contact Dynamics of rigid particles

The systematic errors due to the practical implementation of the Contact Dynamics method for simulation of dense granular media are examined. It is shown that, using the usual iterative solver to simulate a chain of rigid particles, effective elasticity and sound propagation with a finite velocity occur. The characteristics of these phenomena are investigated analytically and numerically in order to assess the limits of applicability of this simulation method and to compare it with soft particle molecular dynamics.

Self-Quenched Dynamics

We introduce a model for the slow relaxation of an energy landscape caused by its local interaction with a random walker whose motion is dictated by the landscape itself. By choosing relevant measures of time and potential this self-quenched dynamics can be mapped on to the ``True'' Self-Avoiding Walk model. This correspondence reveals that the average distance of the walker at time $t$ from its starting point is $R(t)\sim\log(t)^γ$, where $γ=2/3$ for one dimension and 1/2 for all higher dimensions. Furthermore, the evolution of the landscape is similar to that in growth models with extremal dynamics.

Self-organization, Localization of Shear Bands and Aging in Loose Granular Materials

We introduce a mesoscopic model for the formation and evolution of shear bands in loose granular media. Numerical simulations reveal that the system undergoes a non-trivial self-organization process which is governed by the motion of the shear band and the consequent restructuring of the material along it. High density regions are built up, progressively confining the shear bands in localized regions. This results in an inhomogeneous aging of the material with a very slow increase in the mean density, displaying an unusual glassy like system-size dependence.

A lattice gas model of avalanches in a granular pile

A granular media lattice gas (GMLG) model is used to study avalanches in a two-dimensional granular pile. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm by showing that several features of the non-critical behaviour of real sandpile surfaces, such as the bounded outflow statistics or the finite-size effect of the time evolution of the pile mass, can be reproduced by this simulation approach.

On Cellular Automata Models of Single Lane Traffic

The jamming transition in the stochastic cellular automaton model (Nagel-Schreckenberg model) of highway traffic is analyzed in detail, by studying the relaxation time, a mapping to surface growth problems and the investigation of correlation functions. Three different classes of behavior can be distinguished depending on the speed limit $v_{max}$. For $v_{max} = 1$ the model is closely related to KPZ class of surface growth. For $1<v_{max} < \infty$ the relaxation time has a well defined peak at a density of cars $ρ$ somewhat lower than position of the maximum in the fundamental diagram: This density can be identified with the jamming point. At the jamming point the properties of the correlations also change significantly. In the $v_{max}=\infty $ limit the model undergoes a first order transition at $ρ\to 0$. It seems that in the relevant cases $1<v_{max} < \infty$ the jamming transition is under the influence of second order phase transition in the deterministic model and of the first order transition at $v_{max}=\infty $.

Tunneling and Universality in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect

We show analytically and numerically that omission of quantum interference from the Chalker-Coddington model of the integer quantum Hall effect gives a localization length exponent nu=4/3 as in ordinary two-dimensional percolation. Thus, contrary to semi-classical scaling arguments, tunneling alone does not lead to nu=7/3.
